Hi Everyone The juvenile Parasitic Jaeger is still present along the south shore of Lake Deschenes along the Ottawa River. This afternoon and most of yesterday it followed the a similar schedule. Also along the shoreline between Dick Bell Park and Britannia Pier at least 4 Nelson’s Sparrows have been observed since yesterday morning. Good birding, Bruce Directions: Andrew Haydon Park is located off Carling Ave. There are two entrances and the jaeger is best observed from the entrance east of Holly Acres Road. For those who may not have seen the juv. Parasitic Jaeger since it was 1st reported last Sunday — the bird was still present this morning, seen from "Ottawa Beach". From 0730 - 0745, it flew past the beach a few times, then settled on the river. I had good views using only binoculars. Ottawa Beach is located at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park along Carling Avenue. Park at the “Water Playground” parking lot and walk directly north to the river opposite the washrooms & play structures. The walk down to the beach is quite muddy & wet. [Ontbirds] Ottawa: Parasitic Jaeger
Hi Ontbirders This morning at 8:30 a.m. I observed an adult light morph Parasitic Jaeger flying along the Ottawa River at Deschenes Rapids. The jaeger flew in from the east, spooked all the gulls that were resting on the exposed rocks at Deschenes Rapids than continued west and disappeared. I relocated it off Dick Bell Park from upper Deschenes Rapids. When I arrived at Dick Bell Park the jaeger was gone and I checked Shirley's Bay but no luck. There were few gulls west of Deschenes Rapids except off Innis Point where there was a small concentration of Ring-billed Gulls and 30+ Common Tern. Good Birding, Bruce Directions: Deschenes Rapids, from Britannia Filtration Plant: From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 129 (Greenbank Pinecrest Roads). If travelling west, the 0.3 km offramp dumps you right or north onto Pinecrest Road. If driving east, a 0.3 km offramp brings you to Pinecrest/Greenbank Road, where you will turn left or north onto Pinecrest Road and in 0.4 km join the westbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Pinecrest Road north 0.8 km from here to Richmond Road. Turn right or northeast onto Richmond and go 0.5 km, crossing Carling Avenue, to Poulin Avenue. Turn left or north onto Poulin and go 0.6 km to where a left only turn puts you on Howe Street. Follow Howe west 0.2 km to Britannia Road. Turn right or north onto Britannia Road and proceed 0.8 km to Cassels Street. Turn right or east onto Cassels and go 0.7 km to a small parking area on the end at the Britannia Filtration Plant. Directions: Shirley's Bay: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west to the Moodie Drive exit and turn north (right) on Moodie Drive and continue to Carling Ave. Turn left at Carling Ave. and follow Carling to Rifle Road. Turn right (north) on Rifle Rd. Park at the lot at the end (boat launch). Walk back to the road, and continue through the gate on the Department of National Defense property. There is a trail on your right (clearly marked with vehicle No Entry signs) which heads into the woods, and, eventually to the dyke. There is lots of POISON IVY along the dyke. PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM THE RANGE CONTROL OFFICE BEFORE ENTERING THE DYKE AREA-- Call (613) 991-5740 and request permission to visit the dyke area for birding. [Ontbirds] Ottawa: Parasitic Jaeger
Hi Ontbirders, This morning at 10:25 am I observed a juvenile light-morph Parasitic Jaeger harassing the gulls out on the river at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park. The bird flew in from the north, harassed the gulls for approximately 20 seconds, and then flew off into the distance towards Bayshore. I remained in the area for another hour and the Parasitic Jaeger did not return. With thanks to Tony Beck who aided in identifying the bird from a few photos I took. These photos can be viewed at: http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsofnature/image/128067411 http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsofnature/image/128067413 http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsofnature/image/128067409 Chris Bruce Directions: Andrew Haydon Park is at 3169 Carling in Ottawa's west end. The entrance to the park is at the intersection of Carling and Acres west of Bayshore. The bird would have been easily viewable from any point along the shoreline at the east end of the park.___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Ottawa - Parasitic Jaeger...again!...and Long-billed Dowitcher
Hello Ontbirds people, Today Sept.18, between 11:15 and 12:15, a juvenile Parasitic Jaeger (no doubt the same bird reported yesterday) was seen AGAIN. It was spotted by Bernie Ladouceur and seen by many observers including yours truly, flying over the Ottawa River, harrassing Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. It rested on the water frequently but flew several times, offering excellent views. It's been a long time since a jaeger in Ottawa has been present in the same location for more than one day! Also at Shirley's Bay this morning a juvenile Long-billed Dowitcher was found by Bruce DiLabio and was seen by many observers, between the two islands along the causeway. Good birding! Chris Lewis Bob Bracken Directions to Shirley's Bay, courtesy of Bruce DiLabio: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west to the Moodie Drive exit and turn north (right) on Moodie Drive and continue to Carling Ave. Turn left at Carling Ave. and follow Carling to Rifle Road.
