[Ontbirds] Ottawa - Great Egret, Caspian Tern, N. Rough-winged Swallow

2010-08-14 Thread Patrick Blake

This afternoon around 2-3pm, a GREAT EGRET was visible near the DeschĂȘnes
Rapids at Britannia Conservation Area. The last I saw of it, it was flying
west along the river towards the Shirley's Bay area. There was also a single
CASPIAN TERN amid hundreds of RING-BILLED and AMERICAN HERRING GULLS on the
rapids. Several GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS have begun roosting on the rapids as
well.

BANK SWALLOWS were buzzing around the rapids into the hundreds; amongst them I
was able to pick out one NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW...I'd imagine there were
more, but it was hard to keep track of all the swallows moving back and forth.

Good birding!

Pat

DIRECTIONS: From Carling Avenue heading west, take the right onto Britannia
Road and follow to the end. Turn right onto Cassels Street and the entrance is
a quarter of a kilometer down the street. If coming along Carling Avenue
heading east, turn left onto Richmond Road, then left onto Poulin Avenue. This
will connect to Britannia Road; follow to the end and turn right onto Cassels
Street.

2010-07-29 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hello Ontbirders
I spent a few hours birding along the Ottawa River between Britannia and
Shirley's Bay this morning. With the cooler overnight temperatures and winds Nw
there was a small increase in shorebirds. I saw my first juvenile Least
Sandpiper, with a total of 12 at Shirley's Bay along with 4 Great Egret, 100+
Wood Duck, 8 American Wigeon, 3 Northern Pintail, both Green and Blue-winged
Teal, 6 Hooded Merganser and 1 male Lesser Scaup. At Britannia I had my first
juvenile Bonaparte's Gull feeding over the rapids.
Good Birding, Bruce

exit and turn north (right) on Moodie Drive and continue to Carling Ave. Turn
left at Carling Ave. and follow Carling to Rifle Road. Turn right (north) on

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Great Egret, Yellow-throated vireo and migrants

2009-09-04 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hello Ontbirders
Spent a few hours yesterday birding along the Ottawa River from Andrew Haydon
Park to Constance Bay. There was lots of activity with 15 species of warblers
including numerous Wilson's, Canada, Blackburnian, Black-throated Blue and
Magnolia Warblers. At Shirley's Bay along the road 5 species of vireo's were
observed including 1 Yellow-throated, 2 Philadelphia and 3 Blue-headed. With
the recent sunny weather and no rain, the water levels along the Ottawa River
are finally dropping. There is a little mudflat/sandbar at Andrew Haydon Park,
and Shirley's Bay has a bit at the mouth of Watts Creek. A Great Egret was
resting in a tree off the dyke. Lots of other land birds including
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Swainson's Thrush, Baltimore Oriole, Scarlet Tanager,
and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Further up river at Constance Bay there was some
mudflats with a few shorebirds, Greater Yellowlegs and Semipalmated Sandpiper.
The breeding Red-headed Woodpeckers were successful again and 2 juvenile birds
were observed at the "Old Burn Site" This is the 8th consecutive year the
woodpeckers have bred. The woodpeckers were fly catching and easy to see. If
you require additional information, please email me privately.

good birding, Bruce

[Ontbirds]Ottawa: Great Egret, Red Knot, Lesser Black-backed Gull

2005-08-27 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Everyone
The birding along the Ottawa River was very good today. With the lower
water levels there were 2 juv. Red Knot along the shoreline just east of
Andrew Haydon Park and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull off Britannia Pier.
At Shirley's Bay, a record high of 6 Great Egrets were present moving
between the base of the dyke and between the first and second island. There
were also six juv. Stilt Sandpipers feeding in a mixed flock of yellowlegs
and Pectoral Sandpiper. The variety of warblers at Britannia Conservation
Area continues to change with Orange-crowned,Wilson's, Parula and more
Blackpoll warblers.

   good birding

[Ontbirds]Ottawa - Great Egret - Mud Lake - June 17

2004-06-17 Thread Bev McBride
Dear (Ottawa) Ontbirders,

There is a Great Egret in the pond (Mud Lake) at the Britannia Conservation
area this morning. It is in the east end of the pond. Dave Moore
discovered it.

Bev McBride
Ottawa

Directions to Mud Lake:

The BCA can be reached by taking Pinecrest Road (exit 129) off the Hwy 417.
Go north on Pinecrest, then turn right (east) onto Richmond Road. After
Richmond crosses Carling Avenue, turn left (north) onto Poulin Avenue.
Poulin intersects with Britannia Road. Turning right onto Britannia will
take you to Cassels Street. Britannia Road and Cassels Street form the BCA's
western and northern boundaries respectively, and a National Capital
Commission (NCC) bicycle path borders it to the south. Parking is easy
anywhere along Cassels; there are, however, no facilities in the CA. (from
Ottawa Field-Naturalists's Club web site.)
