The Great Egret was seen feeding again this morning near the mudflats in the
west most part of Andrew Haydon Park. A Great Blue Heron feeding in the same
spot.

Also seen this morning were Kildeer, 2 Spotted Sandpiper and a flock of 16
Least Sandpipers. Happy birding.

While birding Andrew Haydon Park I saw 1 Great Egret feeing in the shallow
waters at the west end of the park next to the mud flats near the marina. A
Great Heron is at the same location.

With the recent and ongoing heat wave, water levels are low in a number of
places. If the low precipitation and hot temps continue, it is shaping up to
be good shorebird
habitat for the upcoming migration. In addition to 2 Solitary Sandpipers there
was a smattering of other smaller shorebirds. Happy birding.

Directions: Andrew Haydon Park can be reached via Csrling Avenue heading west
past Richmond Road. There is construction just before you reach Andrew Haydon
Park so traffic is down to1 lane on spots. Enter at the second entrance to
reach the mud flats near the marina.

Hi Ontbirders:

The hawk owl at Moose Creek was seen perched this morning near the railroad
tracks along Valley Street.

There were early indications in the Fall this species was on the move with a
couple of sightings near Montreal and one even in Vermont. Happy birding.

backjust in time to see the Great Egret take flight headed eastward and

2008-10-20 Thread Ott User
Hi.
A lingering Great Egret was still at the pond along Earle Armstrong Road
near High Road. A Great Egret has been seen at this pond off and on now for at
least a month. Some days I see it and some days I don't (even when I walk out
to check). Late today it was busily feeding at the pond until dusk. There
were also 2 to 3 Great Blue Heron at the same pond along with a few hundred
Canada Geese. A White-Winged Scoter was also observed resting on the pond.
Last time I checked, Green-Winged Teals were still presnt at the pond along the
inner loop at the Jack Pine Trail. A number of males can be seen in nice
plumage. A young common merganser has been at the same pond for a couple of
months now. It swims very close to the boardwalk for great views.

The Great Egret originally reported by JoAnne McDonald 2 days ago is still
at the reported location. Saw it on Sunday and later in the day Monday, May
28th. In the same area was a Great Blue Heron and a Green Heron along with
about a dozen or so Ring-billed Gulls actively fishing.

On Sunday I saw a Wilson's Snipe perched on a post and singing on Earle
Armstrong near Bowesville Road. A Wilson's Snipe was seen in this same spot
last year. Also, a number of Bobolinks and American Goldfinch were seen
nearby.

At 5:35 pm today, from my bus going over the Rideau River between Lees and

This would make it visible from Springhurst Park, which can be reached from the

Hello Ontbirders

After a cold and miserable weekend, I enjoyed a comfortable
delightful spectacle this evening at the quarry ponds off Moodie Drive,
south of Trail Road.

It was still cold, windy and wet when I arrived at about 4:50 pm.
However, there were a few interesting birds to keep me entertained.
As I scoped the area, the wind died down, the temperature rose, and the
sun poked through the western clouds.

Birds began arriving to the roost in good numbers. Meanwhile, a few
predators kept stirring the mix. This included an adult male Merlin, an
adult Red-tailed Hawk, and two Coyotes patrolling the shoreline.

Geese, swallows and blackbirds continued to arrive, even as I left at
7:45 pm.
The adult Greater White-fronted Goose arrived at 7:40 pm. It came in on
its own, and was persistently calling before it landed.

Other birds present include the following:
* All 6 eastern swallow species
* 17 species of waterfowl including all three species of merganser, 3
Redhead, 3 Ruddy Ducks and a Greater Snow Goose.
* 7 species of gull including 5 Bonapartes (various plumages), 3 adult
Lesser Black-backed, 4 various immature Glaucous, and one immaculate
breeding plumaged Iceland
* One night-heron was heard barking

Directions courtesy of Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/birding.htm

From Highway 416 take exit 66 (Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4
km offramp dumps onto Fallowfield, where you will turn right or west.
If northbound, the 0.4 km offramp brings you to Fallowfield, where you
will turn left or west onto it and in 0.5 km join the southbound
offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Fallowfield Road west for
an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or southeast onto
Moodie Drive and go 5.3 km, passing Cambrian Road to reach the quarries
(second gate on the left). Park along the side of the road without
blocking the access.

Warning: This site is private property and is an active quarry. Because
of liability concerns the pit operators do not allow access during
working hours. Trucks and machinery operate here on workdays, so please
don't block the roads into the quarry. At such times, limited birding
can be accomplished from the roadside, which overlooks the pond,
especially with a good scope.

Hi All,

A morning outing to Second Marsh resulted in at least 8 Little Gulls
with 400+ Bonaparte's Gulls, my first 4 Common Terns of the year, also
here were a few Ruddy Ducks, Northern Shovelers and 1 Greater
Yellowlegs, in the very cold east winds.

I also stopped in at Thickson's Woods, where, just inside the gate at
the north side I watched a quiet LEAST FLYCATCHER for about 5 minutes
(also, independently seen and photographed by Gord Gallant), this seemed
quite early for this species in the GTA, early dates showing as April
25th. Also at Thickson's were many Winter Wrens, Yellow-rumped
Warblers, a couple of Pine Warblers (both species singing), a few
Eastern Towhees, and a large flock (100+) of mixed swallows along
Thickson's at the west side of the woods, including Northern
Rough-winged, Barn, Tree and a couple of Bank Swallows.

Good birding,
Frank Pinilla

DIRECTIONS:
Second Marsh - If driving east from Toronto on Hwy 401 then exit at
Farewell Street (Exit 419) and drive south to Colonel Sam Drive, turn
left, east on Colonel Sam Drive and drive to the General Motors Head
Office parking lot. Park at the southwest corner of the lot and follow
the grassy trail from that corner to the viewing tower.
The trail from the tower runs north into the woods to another viewing
tower with another view of the marsh and of the surrounding woods and
wet area.=20
