Hi Reza, My friend Greg does custom cases. Most of his work is medical and sensitive equipment. He's done some really neat projects. He actually did a set of tradeshow/demo cases for VOIP. The lid holds a router, POE switch, small embedded PBX and the body has foam slots for all the phones. As I recall, it had a power bar in it so all you did was unscrew a little port, pull out the power cable, plug into the wall spread your phones out on the board room table, et voila: demo. Really impressive, not cheap though. I think Dave gave you a good steer there with Clydesdale. I know Greg and the Clydesdale have teamed up on projects in the past, they're in the same business park I think. So, I'll share what I've learned from Greg over the years when I've asked him for custom cases for my own projects. If you can avoid custom, do it. You're paying a pretty big premium to get the dimensions _exactly_ the way you want, or the castors, or handles _exactly_ where you want. Off the shelf cases are usually available within inches of what you would have custom ordered, and for a fraction of the cost. Pelican makes a wide range of fantastic cases. If you're watching some scientist on National Geographic unpack some instrument in some harsh climate, it's usually in a Pelican case. They're extremely tough. We ship our backup tapes by UPS weekly. We put a Pelican case in a regular UPS express bag with no other protection. The bag is usually pretty beat up after the trip but after 3+ years doing this, they cases hardly have a scratch. I can't get locks to last more than a couple of months, but the cases are unblemished. You can stop by my office and beat one up if you want. :-) If what you really need is custom foam inserts, Pelican's foam inserts are sort of 3D laser perforated in about 1cm increments so you can make most shapes using just your fingers. If you need really cool custom foam inserts, Greg does custom CNC cutting of foam and he has outsources some work to shops that have fun lasers. Something like this would probably hold your 10 laptops and maybe some cables too depending on how you arrange the foam: http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1630 I think the beauty of that one is that it's got an extending handle and wheels like regular rolling luggage. You can search the Pelican website by dimensions so you could pick the best fit for your 2U servers and other case. If you decide that you still need custom, whether cases or foam, you can get a hold of Greg through his website: www.boxercase.com You can tell from the homepage that they do some really cool custom stuff. The sky is the limit but you pay for what you get. Now, what you really need is a strong assistant to help you carry all that around the place. [biz] Need DID provider (US CAN) who will invoice
Hi Folks, I've seen a few recommendations on the list for DID providers and I know this is a relatively common question but I'd like to put a bit of a twist on it: I'm looking for post-paid. Maybe that's not even the right term. Basically, I want an invoice rather than credit card payment. Maybe cheap and easy DIDs aren't compatible with all the hassle of invoices and such, but I'm in a corporate environment and I'd rather not have to file an expense report for my phone service each month. Come to think of it, I don't even mind putting up a couple hundred dollars (way more than our monthly usage) so that it's not even truly 'post'-paid. I just want them to send an invoice to our AP department and leave me out of the monthly paperwork. I'm looking for a carrier who can do DID at least Termination would be a bonus. I wouldn't ask anyone to do my homework in terms of specific NPA-NXX support but in case anyone's interested, I'm looking for Philadelphia PA, San Diego CA, Malton ON, and Varennes QC in the short term. I've looked at IPcomms. I like their coverage area and self serve interface, but sadly it's all seems pre-paid. Like many others here, I enjoy good service with Unlimitel but it's credit card and Canadian only. If you've got experience with someone you like: good voice quality and good service, please let me know. If I'm barking up the wrong tree, I'd be happy if someone could take a minute and educate me. I guess you never filed in courts to know what the costs are to sue people for every single little thing out there. A co-op system like this would never have the money to come up with the paralegal fees even. So, you are not much more secured anyways with such a system; anyhow, by picking one person I meant just a rep to grab good prices like Erik said. For a co-op system once you calculate the administration cost, insurance cost for bail outs, etc...you are already loosing whatever you thought you might have saved in the first place. Re: [biz] Asterisk PA/Paging
If they don't already have a PA system as Alex suggests, then there are companies that do paging. One of the companies I dealt with once was Valcom and I was quite happy. Most paging systems provide you a very convenient interface. If I recall, you just plug their system into an FXO port. You just go offhook, wait a second or so for that chime, and send the audio. Simplest way, just put in an FXO board and give it extension 5123. Whenever someone dials 5123, they'll hear the chime and they can just say Keith, line 1, it's your wife and she sounds upset! The one time I dealt with paging was in a warehouse. The speakers have to be installed 30 feet up so I was happy to let Valcom do the paging and just give me the interface I needed. They do this stuff all day so I'm sure they can make it work for you. I hope that helps, Dave On Jan 18, 2008 3:37 PM, Keith Major | Aquarius Telecom Inc. Re: [biz] external ringer on IP phones
Mike, I don't think you'll really have much luck with a VOIP phone and an external ringer in the traditional sense. Your best bet might be to use an ATA or an FXS card, put that in a ring group with the VOIP phone and then use an external ringer on the FXS line. Then the phone will ring normally and the ATA will trigger the external ringer. Re: [biz] Unlimited National PRI experience dealing with Comwave?
Can someone clarify the terminology here for me? Other than the number of concurrent calls allowed, how is a vPRI different than any SIP service I might buy from my favorite ITSP? Is it because you're using a leased/dedicated/point to point data circuit? Is it because there are many DIDs on one account? In general, my investigation has found that by the time one pays for a data circuit of sufficient quality and bandwidth to be comparable to a T1/PRI circuit (consider mean time to repair, voice quality etc), that you've spent more than you would on an _actual_ T1/PRI circuit. Further, I assume we all agree that a TDM circuit like this is pretty near the gold standard in terms of voice quality. Am I missing something? What's the driver toward these virtual PRIs? If for any reason quality degrades when you have placed your order, run your packet analysis again and see the arrival IP... and if it differs from the test IPs, then you know they put you on a different switch. Re: [biz] t1 providers
Paul, Disclaimer: The following is just one individual's personal opinion I'd say I've always had good experiences with Sprint (now Rogers). On the business side, I've found the service and technical staff to be proficient and helpful. I've found sales to be responsive and proactive in getting the right solution at the right price. My experience with Bell is that they tend to do a good job, just not an excellent job and they're a huge company and so not as agile as some others. They only seem to have one speed. Telus is similar. ATT in all it's forms has failed to impress me. This is just my opinion and it's from my personal experience having managed IT at a call centre for several years. We were a substantial, not huge, account with approximately 700k minutes per month and 10 T1/PRIs. That's just to give you an idea of how they viewed us. Obviously, the don't roll out the red carpet as much for smaller customers and they really do backflips for bigger customers. Hosted office solution needed
Hi Folks, I've got a customer looking for a hosted office phone solution. He doesn't need dedicated and based on the size, I think shared is best. He's got about 5 remote workers to start. They're going to be on the phone a lot so a either good flat rate/min North American or unlimited option would be important. Users all have high speed but are not tech savvy. I don't know how many have routers or what type they are. Simplicity is important. DID and voice mail as well as an auto attendant would be great. Time is of the essence, we'd like to work out setup issues Monday to have users working Tuesday. So, local pick up of hardware is pretty important to avoid crazy shipping charges. I can arrange for pickup from Williams or Gentek. He said was going to get Vonage but I told him I could find something better. I'm not setup to provide hosted services so I figured I'd fire it at the list and see what people have to offer. If you wouldn't mind sending me an email off list with a link to your website or a description of the product that you think best suits these needs, that would be great. Please include pricing and the type of hardware you are recommending. Any questions can also be directed to my email. If broadly applicable questions come up, I'll post both the question and the answer to this thread. Thanks in advance. Dave -- David Donovan Consultant Fulcrum Solutions
