[biz] Asterisk PA/Paging

Hi All,

 

We have a prospect in a warehouse that would require paging to be done on a
PA type of system through the phone, i.e. someone answers an inbound call,
puts the person on hold, enters a feature code and says, “Keith line 1
please, Keith line 1”.  Similar to what you would find at the grocery store.

 

We would like to deploy an Asterisk solution for them but, this is one
requirement that is needed.

 

If anyone would like to share their thoughts on this it would be
appreciated.

Hey Keith,

We use a Polycom IP301 and connect the speaker of the phone to the PA 
(Bogen PA). We also program the IP-301 phone to automatically answer any 
incoming calls and program asterisk to set the proper Header for 
auto-answer.


BUT BY OPENING THE IP-301 PHONE, YOU WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.

I also have a customer who's using the VoIP paging gateway from 
CyberData: http://www.cyberdata.net/products/voip/voip-pager.html

If they don't already have a PA system as Alex suggests, then there
are companies that do paging.  One of the companies I dealt with once
was Valcom and I was quite happy.

Most paging systems provide you a very convenient interface.  If I
recall, you just plug their system into an FXO port.  You just go
offhook, wait a second or so for that chime, and send the audio.
Simplest way, just put in an FXO board and give it extension 5123.
Whenever someone dials 5123, they'll hear the chime and they can just
say "Keith, line 1, it's your wife and she sounds upset!"

The one time I dealt with paging was in a warehouse.  The speakers
have to be installed 30 feet up so I was happy to let Valcom do the
paging and just give me the interface I needed.  They do this stuff
all day so I'm sure they can make it work for you.

Asterisk has the ability to page via the soundcard, and that should fit this
scenario nicely. Get a half-decent soundcard and find a way to hook it into
the PA system.
