Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
I do not know the concentration now that you ask... I had all that figured out back when I came up with my formula... It is the concentration that is used to mix 2 oz to 1 gallon to spray in the house for roaches I can find out when I get back near the shed where the chemicals are. It is not near the house or barn I get it at Estes Chemical in OKC Cecil - Original Message - From: "Carol J. Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
I get it at a chemical supply house. Permethrin is the chemical used to spray around baseboards for roaches etc when the bug guys come every month to an office, home, etc Yes Permetherin is deadly to cats. Also is Ivomec... I use 2 cc Ivomec with a tablespoon of mineral oil in the cats ears to get rid of mites etc.. Just enough that I know it gets in the ear and not enough for them to lick Cecil in OKla - Original Message - From: "Stephanie Parrish" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, June 20, 2006 1:22 PM Subject: Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies > > Cecil, > > Sounds like a good remedy. Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
Cecil, Where do you purchase your permethrin from and what percentage is it? I've been poking around on the Internet, and 10% seems to be common; 38% is the legal limit and is very expensive. Permethrin is a neurotoxin and carcinogen and I'm not happy about it. I hope that DE will work on the flies, but I'm sure permethrin will be quicker and right now, that's important. Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
Cecil, Sounds like a good remedy. Where can you buy straight permethrin? One minor clarification just in case anyone is actually tempted to use Frontline on their sheep ( doubtful since it is so expensive, but thought this was worth mentioning anyway)... Frontline is different than permethrin - active ingredient in Frontline is called fipronil. Have no idea how safe fipronil is in sheep - anyone tried it? Seems pretty safe for cats and dogs. Permethrin is one of the active ingredients in Advantix, which works great for fleas and ticks in dogs. Also expensive. Note: PERMETHRIN IS FATAL TO CATS!!! Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
You folks are such a wealth of information! For my first round of attack, I'm going to try Chris' diatomaceous earth suggestion in my dog and sheep feed. And I like Cecil's idea of the homemade Frontline solution, so I'll get some permethrin. I'm not entirely happy putting any kind of poison on my sheep's hide, but I've got to do something. My mom has just started drinking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar every day, diluted in a juice glass of water. She read that it helps repel mosquitos, and she's convinced it does. Since I've wanted to use vinegar in the sheep water for quite awhile now, this gives me more reason to work out the math on how much to put in my stock tank. I know I'll need to build up the amount gradually to ensure the sheep don't refuse to drink (which in our 100+ degree heat could be deadly). I'll keep you posted. Thanks to everyone for such great ideas. Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
I mix 2 oz of permethrin to 1 qt of mineral oil, put it in a plastic botle with about a 1/8 inch hole in the top and put a line of this down the sheep's back from head to toe. I try not to get any in their eyes... this seems to work longer than spraying. I think pyrethrins would also work, as an additive to help with the mosquitoes. My vet on the premises is not up and around yet this morning as he is a lat sleeper, But I will try ti think to ask... I have had good results with the mineral oil mixture. I use it on the dogs also. It is the sam thing as FRONTINE, but just diluted to where it covers a larger area I would'nt use any kind of aromatic oil as it might cause absorption into the skin/bloodstream... I buy mineral oil by the gallon. They also make little doughnuts that go in the water tanks to kill mosquitoes without contaminating the water. This stuff is Bacillus Thurengesis (BT) or a type of it. A organic style of bug spray. I use it on the trees around the dogs and cats. Perhaps if you used BT as a premis spray it would get rid of the mosquitoes. This is what happens when you can't use DDT.! Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
Carol, You might have better luck with a scratching post treated with insecticide rather than a curtain type. My sheep all love to rub along the fence line so I'm thinking about making a "post" and seeing if they will use it. For now I'm using a product I got from Gardeners supply website. It is a granulated mosquito repellent that's primarily garlic. I sprinkle it around the preimeter of the property. I was skeptical that it would do any good at all as I live on a property that is designated a wetland, and deal with hordes of mosquitos every year. Anyway, I just reordered two more containers of this stuff because it works so well. Safe for the critters too. It repels and kills adult mosquitos. Lasts for about 3 weeks each treatment. Other than that I rub them all down with cedar oil. It's absorbed into the hair shaft so it lasts longer than most sprays. Also totally safe for the critters. A pain to do a lot of sheep this way but I feel sorry for them when they are so tormented ! ___ This message is from the blackbelly mailing list Visit the list's homepage at %http://www.blackbellysheep.info
Re: [blackbelly] mosquitos and flies
We have bat boxes and the bats usually come in the spring but only stay here long enough to have babies, then they move on, I presume further north (we're in Florida). Bats are GREAT, but keep in mind, they don't just fly around your property - they travel many miles every night. Many bat boxes never have a bat in them - not sure how we got lucky with ours, but there are many bat boxes built by various Universities in FLA that have never seen their first bat . . .so it's kind of hit and miss with attracting them. I've also considered that cow 'curtain', but I don't know if these crazy blackbellies would walk through it or just jump over it!
