Comment (by pierre.labastie):

No please, go ahead: I have trashed what I had done for testing LXDE-
GTK+3, then changed my mind. As a result, I do not remember which packages
I have built, so that I cannot tag correctly. All I know is that the
  result was good.

I've open another ticket (for 8.5) related to moving LXDE to GTK+3. Seems
possible, but we might have to build libfm twice (with GTK+2, for xfce,
  and with GKT+3, for lxde).

Which xfce package uses libfm?

Comment (by bdubbs):

I've updated the book with (optional) instructions to build rustc in /opt.
There may still be some changes needed so I'm leaving this ticket open for
Ken to review what is now in the book, make any changes needed, and then
  finally close this ticket.

We have been trying to get this working properly for quite a while. I do
not know if we want to update llvm-7.0.1 with Arch's patch and try
rebuilding rust with system llvm. Maybe that should wait until the next
  rust version.

I tested the Arch's llvm patches on a fresh lfs-blfs installation and it
worked. Built rustc-1.32.0 with system llvm, and then librsvg-2.44.12,
cbindgen-0.6.8, firefox-65.0b12, thunderbird-60.4.0 and cbindgen-0.7.1
(released yesterday).

HEADS UP - I get a FTBFS when trying to build this one:

  {{{
  CCwidgets.o
  CCLD doc-shooter
  /usr/bin/ld: shooter.o: in function `take_window_shot':
  /sources/gtk+-3.24.2/gtk+-3.24.2/docs/tools/shooter.c:173: undefined

Looks like a typo that could be fixed, but I backed down to 3.24.1 for
  stability for now.

I built it using the following patch by gtk git:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/commit/2905fc861acda3d134a198e56ef2f6c962ad3061.diff

Didn't test, still in chroot.

I will say that it may well be, firefox with rust is stable and we may
try to use rust on thunderbird too. It's just that their tests do not
yet fully support our processors. I'm sure that it's a matter of time.

Do you remember what happened on gentoo and other mailing lists with the
advent of ryzen? After the gcc-7.3 release all these threads became
inactive.

Trying a build with system llvm : strangely, the build is no quicker,
despite not having to compile the local llvm, but the log is a *lot*
  shorter as expected.

Interestingly, Arch seem to have moved away from using system llvm and are
still using python2 to build rust. For fedora I can no longer find out how
they build it (latest binaries for rawhide seem to have been updated
recently, the previous links to thir srpm are dead and they have several
pages of cgit matches for rust.

Did you notice that Arch doesn't run the tests for rust? They do run
the tests on other packages.

On this build they are using system llvm
