 By Saturday.

If you don't mind, please don't update any of the core GNOME packages
with the dependency change/update of FAM to Gamin. Many of the core
GNOME packages are now updated in my sandbox, including the dependency
sections, and any changes you make may not merge correctly.

I will ensure I update the FAM to Gamin dependencies in core GNOME
packages once I see you've committed Gamin.

Thanks.

Randy, due to an oversight I also committed the change to
BOOK/gnome/core/gnome-vfs.xml. I had to change it locally since my
sandbox would not validate without it. Hopefully since I only changed
fam to gamin in that file, it should not cause you a big problem.

Yeah, I can understand the validation thing. Don't worry about it.
Thanks for updating to Gamin.

Sounds good. Will wait for the final confirmation from Bruce before
putting it into the book.

How do we handle the dependencies? The options are:
1. Replace all dependencies on FAM by Gamin. I plan to include a link
to FAM's homepage on the gamin page.
2. Cast the dependencies as Gamin or FAM with the FAM link pointing to
FAM's homepage.

Hi all,

Has there been a decision reached on what to do with the FAM/Gamin
proposal of Tushar? I'm all in favor of removing FAM and adding
Gamin. It seems to work as expected with both GNOME and KDE, and I've
not noticed any ill behavior.

Theoretically, ill behavior is possible with the following scenario:

host c1 mounts c2:/some/dir via nfs

If both hosts run FAM, c1's FAM sometimes wants to contact c2's FAM via
c2's portmap. If c2 in fact uses gamin, this fails, and c1 resorts to
polling. Details:

Good knowledge. Thanks, Alex.

However, it has now been almost a month since the RFC. I'm not
real sure there will be any more discussion.

Bruce, Tush is waiting on your response. And I'm waiting to see
what will happen so I can update GNOME. Can you provide an answer?

Thanks.

Lets go ahead and use Gamin, but just comment out the reference in
general/genlib/genlib.xml and don't delete the fam.xml file from svn
yet. This will make it a bit easier to revert to fam if we need to.

Tushar,

I could not tell from your previous message if you wanted me to go
ahead and add Gamin to the book, or if you are going to do it.

If you are, what is the time frame you are looking at?

Sorry to be a pest about this, but as I mentioned, I'd like to update
GNOME and the FAM/Gamin thing kind of stalls me.

Thanks for your prompt reply. :-)
