I really don't want to add another link for approximately 360 packages.
Additionally, we don't actually *use* the fm info.

How hard is it for users to merely google for the package name and find
the freshmeat or other relevant locations?

Its not hard. But I suggested it coz I think of it as missing
functionality. Before installing a package I like to check what the
maintainer has to say about the package. For example the pci-utils
homepage states that the package also included a library for accessing
the pci bus. Sometimes they have notes on their homepage for some
additional configuration. Some packages have the documentation so that
it is easier to figure out if I really need the command before
installing.

Searching for the package is not as convinient as clicking on a link:)

I agree, google isn't fun. If we can find a home or further
information link we should provide it.

Just to be complete, if for no other reason.

Well, I'd guess that 9 out of 10 BLFS packages are downloaded
from the maintainer's site already. For these packages, listing
the maintainer's web site link would be redundant.

And for many of the packages I've updated in the last year or so,
I've included a link to the home page (or other related docs) if
I've felt that including this information was warranted.

I think we should take Tush's suggestion on a case-by-case basis,
and if providing a link to extra information is felt helpful by
an Editor, then do it. However, I don't think we need to say that
we should do it for each package as a matter of course.

I see that LFS has already started pointing to the freshmeat entry. I

Kinda out of the loop it seems. Freshmeat links have been pulled from
the LFS book because we had no control over which version of a package
was referenced by the download link and clicking through to find the
right version was not always so cut and dry. Ultimately we went for the
most likely official location of each package and put that in the
book and it has worked better than freshmeat did. And with package
version entities, maintenance is nearly nil other than updating sizes.

I think I remember seeing that in the stable release. Probably 6.0.

Anyways, I am not suggesting including the FM entries for download
locations, rather to point to the FM location in addition to the
download links that we have so that user's can get more information on
the package.
