The strangest thing happened. I followed the instructions at the link above
to make a live USB with the LFS image I had created on my machine. Then I
booted from the live USB on a different machine (a lenovo laptop). I was
presented with the GRUB command line. After some playing around I was able
to find the linux image and boot it. My LFS screen came up and the boot
output as usual came up so I thought "success". Then the screen went blank
and I was presented with my GUI Ubuntu login screen from the system
installed on the laptop's hard drive. How is this even possible?

[blfs-support] Update the kernel to 5.10.1

2020-12-15 Thread James Read via blfs-support
Hi,

I have a running LFS system. Was thinking about updating the kernel to the
latest stable version (5.10.1). Is this a bad idea? Could it break the
system?

You can do that, but do NOT replace the kernel headers. glibc depends
on the headers.

Actually, I suggest you only update the kernel if you have a specific
need for something in the new kernel.

I cannot seem to pull anything down this morning, either LFS or BLFS.
Is there some maintenance going on?

Trac is mostly timing out too.

Yes something happened to the repos, and it is my fault. I asked Bruce
to run "svnadmin upgrade" on the ALFS repo, and then svn+ssh:// was
answering No repository found. svn:// was still working though. Then
Bruce and Douglas tried to fix it, and I think that the svn server was
put off. Note that it still works for me as svn:// .

It should be working again for now. Bruce and I fixed it about 45
minutes ago.
