I took care of this little issue last evening over the phone. What John did
was accidentally rename an entire group of files at the same time instead of
just the single file that he wanted to change.

Somehow, inadvertently, I re-labeled a folder which is creating some serious
problems.

Now, when I bring up My documents, everything comes up with my wife's name
and a number. For example, Linda Justice 1, Linda Justice 2, etc.
All I was trying to do was create a folder for my wife. But I must have
inadvertently renamed a vital file which controls how the various documents
are displayed. I tried using System Restore and taking the file back to
another date before today. But the thing keeps calling everything Linda
Justice.
I do remember hearing something about desktop.ini or something like that.
Could I have renamed that file or folder in error? Yes. I have just
returned from the hospital and I don't think I'm quite myself. Rick, I
believe it's time for a little Justice to Justice help here.
If anyone has any additional ideas, I'd appreciate it.

In the AVG test centre, press control f4. The complete test settings
dialogue box appears. If you tab, you should hear scan files without
interruptions. Make sure this check box is unchecked in order to see the
alerts. If this is not the case, press space. Finally, tab to OK and press
enter. Hope that helps.

[Blind-Computing] File storadh question

2007-08-24 Thread William Stephan
I have yet to successfully burn a CD, so keep that in mind if this is a stupid
question.

I have a bunch of .wav files that I have compressed to whatever format has a
.blk extension. I
want to store them on CDs. Can I simply go into windows explorer or my
computer and select the files, copy them to the clipboard then open my CD
drive and dump the clipboard, or to I have to use a CD ripping program for this?
I would think that these are just like any other file since they're compressed,
but I figure I should ask to be on the safe side.

Thanks.

You are trying to burn a data CD, and as a result you do not need a ripping
program at all. The only time you burn an audio disk is when creating a
music CD.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Error Loading IE 6-XP Home

2007-08-24 Thread Margaret Thomas
Hi All,

My tech doesn't know what happened and he and his other techs spent a
lot of time working on the XP. First with a remote key fix they have and
that didn't work. He had to take the machine to the shop to work on.
Things after my last post went from bad to worse.

I think I had asked about suggestions for a corded keyboard board since
I thought the expensive one I had was seven and a half years old and keys
would periodically stop working but I was able to wiggle waggle them and
them getting working again, but I had the feeling the keyboard was on its
last legs. The Insert key on the num pad totally died over the weekend.
The one on the 6 pack helped, but having to do several keystrokes 2 handed
that were normally performed one handed was a royal pain.

I got a message on boot that the firewall was disabled and, with all the
problems I had performing computer maintenance, I gave up and let my tech
try.

They couldn't get the PC maintenance to work either, so I don't feel
totally stupid. They spent 10-12 hours trying to solve the validation and
maintenance problems and couldn't. They wiped everything off the hard
drive, installed a new hard drive and gave me a keyboard to try. They
installed IE 7 instead of 6. One good thing is that the old hard drive was
40 GB and the new one is
80 GB and the latest version of JAWS 8 is installed in addition to the other
JFW versions I had on the old machine. I stuck with XP.

The machine was in the shop for several days and I just got it back this
afternoon.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help with the IE Error message and my PC
maintenance problems last week.

Kindly forgive any typos spell check doesn't catch. I'm not used to
this new to me keyboard yet and some of the keys don't seem to respond to
JAWS key and 1 for keyboard help.

Margaret

 Hi Ricque,

I seem to be in a loop trying to download the file. It seems MS
has to certify that my copy of XP and/or Office is genuine before it
will let me download it. It then said something about the genuine
advantage version having expired and I haven't been able to find out
how to get an unexpired one yet. I may have messed up since at least
the first I was asked if I wanted to run Publisher I said no since I
didn't understand that it was needed to run the validation process.
The expired thing may mean that I've exceeded my allotted attempts.
I'm hoping I can try again later.

I could swear that I've downloaded the genuine advantage thing
every time it has come up with updates. The machine is 2 years old
 and the copy XP
is legal as far as I know. My tech built the machine and I don't know
if it was already on there or if he installed it. Anyway, I need a
 break.

No, you do not want the service pack 1 package.

 Hi All,

I got the following error message every time I loaded IE 6 today:

 Error
A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You
 may need to run setup.

and there was an okay button to press.

I did a Google search and found a Microsoft article that seems to
give a resolution to the problem, but I wanted to make sure I didn't
get myself into a mess and have a couple of questions.

 SYMPTOMS
After you connect to a Web site, you may receive the following error
 message:
A file that is required to run search companion cannot be found. You
 may need to run setup.
After you receive this error message, you cannot use Search Companion
to search for files or folders, or to search the Internet. The options
 to search for

 CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a file required to run Search Companion is
missing or damaged. Note that this problem affects only the
 English-language version
 of Windows XP.

NOTE: Search Companion files may be damaged if you have Search

I signed up for a site with very great deals. Everyone but me can access the
stores on said site. I've made sure my pop up blocker is disabled and that
java script is enabled. I also checked my hosts file and nonthing is wring
theer. I get a 404 error while everyone else can get theer. I get a blank
page in firefox as well. Hear is a link to try.

I hope you can help. It's like the page is not taking redirects. Thanks.

Re: [Blind-Computing] help with a web page

2007-08-24 Thread Jacob Kruger
It seems to work fine for me, but FWIW, because there was a specific website
that was actually making my instance of Jaws 'crash' as such, I've recently
upgraded to IE 7 after FS support told me to.

Not sure if that's relevant, but anyway...

Stay well

Re: [Blind-Computing] help with a web page

2007-08-24 Thread Jacob Kruger
Strange.

What happens if you use the Ins. + Esc. key combination that's supposed to
make Jaws 'refresh' it's virtual buffer?

Another thing to try out is to use the 'View' menu, and choose 'Source' and
see if the page is actually loading as a blank, or whether it's only really
the screenreader that's doing it as such.

Not sure if this will help much, but it might give you more info at least.

Stay well

And one more thing I've just thought of.

Make sure your browser is actually maximized when this page is being loaded,
but I suppose if that were really a problem, then no webpages would really
work as such, but I have, FWIW, once or twice had webpages that just say
'blank' to me over and over again come right when I realised that the window
hadn't as such been maximized.

FWIW, the key combination Alt + Space will bring up the system menu, and the
hotkey X will then make sure it is in fact maximised.

Hi
I just found the fax program in my windows xp. It appears to be
accessible. Has anyone else tried using the fax program that comes with the

Not sure if this is right/helpful, but try looking on the start menu -
settings - control panel - printers and faxes and you may find something
there. Only problem is I'm not sure if this instance of a 'fax' thing
 will
also be needed by your other pieces of software, but chances are they
 don't
as such use the built-in stuff.

 Subject: [Blind-Computing] WindowsXP fax program

 Hi:
Since installing DSL on this XP computer every time my phone rings the
 fax
program that is a part of XP (IN Accessories, communications, fax) tries
 to
pickup the call as a incomming fax. I don't need this program, as I have
 two
other fax programs (MightyFax the Fax program in K1000 version 11).
 Does
anyone know how to disable it? I have looked inthe startup manager and
 the
add remove programs, in the control section and can't find it. It is not
 listed as fax or msfax.
 Thanks,

I am running windows xp and jaws 5.0 I keep getting a prompt when I boot

Hey Sarah,

I went to the page with no problem at all. It only took about 10 seconds for
the page to come up.
It seems like a neat place. I'll check it out further, later.

I had a similar problem where the fire wall in our router was preventing me
from getting to some pages and preventing me from downloading some books
from BookShare.org. Once my husband made some changes to the router, the
problem went away.
