Could you please give me some more info on WinFax Pro. It sounds like

Hi Patricia,

One good accessible program that works well, and for little money, is WinFax
Pro, which allows you to receive and send faxes from your computer.

There is even a ring function, that's really loud, in my opinion, but it
rings over your computer speakers, and, if you've got Jaws 7 and above, Jaws
will speak out the number that's calling you, if you subscribe to that
service.

As has already been pointed out, several software packages have fax
receiving and sending capabilities, most predominantly, Open Book and
Kurzweill all versions.

You can also get software like Nuance OmniPage Pro, and Microsoft Office,
although I'm not too sure about the latter.

Now, in terms of stand alone fax machines, I have always been very impressed
with the Brother line of all in ones.

I used to own one in the past, but have never needed another one since that
one was destroyed in a fire in my office, Don't worry, it wasn't caused by
the fax machine, it was arson. Smile.

Back then, I owned a Brother MFC model fax machine. The MFC stands for
Multi-Function Center. This puppy faxed, scanned, copied, served as a
computer printer, with an LPT1 connection, with only one drawback, the fact
that the automatic sheet feeder was the only way to access the copy and scan
functions.

Ideally, one would want a flatbed scanner or copier, in case one needs to
scan a book, but at that time, that type of functionality wasn't available,
and so we had to settle for what was available. I should also note that
particular MFC model was a monochrome laser printer.

Like I said, when that fax machine was destroyed in the fire in my office,
since I had a fax machine at work, and one at home, we never bothered to
look for another one to fill the other's position, until, that is, this past
Christmas.

My wife and I decided to treat ourselves to a new fax machine to be used in
our home office, as the one we had didn't even have a computer interface,
and the rollers just couldn't be cleaned to a point where they would grab
the paper correctly.

We decided to go to Staples, or Staples/Business Depot, as it's known here
in Canada, as what better place to get a business fax machine than at a
place called Business Depot.

Well, they certainly did not disappoint in the fax department. They had
every conceivable type and model of fax machine, and to be honest, As the
best fax machine I had ever used was the Brother MFC, you might say that I
was predisposed to getting another of the same type.

I should also note that I was predisposed to getting an all in one fax
machine, and that I had no plans of buying a flatbed fax machine, since I
wanted to scan multiple pages fast and easily.

Suffice it to say, once we got to the store, we asked for some help in the
fax department, and we proceeded to shop around, feeling every fax machine
they had on display, around 50 or 60, to be exact, until finally I asked him
if they still made and carried Brother MFC's or all in ones.

He said yes, and proceeded to show me what they had.

They actually had several on display, but I fell in love with one in
particular. It was the Brother MFC 685C.

The list of features are as follows:

*stand alone fax machine, with handset, speakerphone and digital answering
machine;
* stand alone fax, copier, scanner, printer, PC Fax, etcetera;
* Photo-printer and scanner;
*10 in 1 card reader;
USB, Firewire and media card direct printing and editing;
*3 inch by 7 inch colour LCD display;
*Multiple computer interface, USB, Firewire;
*Network capable;
*Hard wire and wireless connectivity, allows printer to be connected to the
network, and used as such;
*auto-sheet feeder and flatbed scanning/faxing/copying;
*and a host of other features too numerous to mention here.

To me, this monster was expensive, because our finances only allow for one
major purchase, once in a while, especially with this purchase coming out to
around 299 dollars Canadian, but others with better or worse income
scenarios may find it good or bad, depending on their circumstances. I
should also note that there were other less expensive models available, some
without answering machine, others without speakerphone, others with only a 5
in 1 card reader, as opposed to the 10 in 1 reader available with the model
we purchased, and yet other without a handset, and only 3 in 1 machines,
instead of the 8 in one model we got.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Question about Avast

2008-04-05 Thread Stanley Smith
I'm not sure what the dummy checkbox stands for, but I think it all has to
do with the skins that load when you start Avast. As for scheduling (I may
be wrong), it is only in the paid version of the program. You can schedule
a boot time scan, but not a regular scan. Someone please correct me on this
if I'm wrong. You can turn the skins off so they won't come up, but Avast
will start up without the skins and will be much easier to get around in
without them.

I guess I need some info on scripts.

Where can I get the information I need?

I have always had enough vision that with magnification I have been able to

But as my vision continues to worsen, I think I better find out more about
anything that will help me in the future.

The model number of one is, HP 6310. It runs around $200.00.
Just make sure when you go to install it you install the software before you
connect the printer to your computer. It will tell you when you can connect
the printer. Also, install all of the software that comes with the printer.
After it is installed, you will find an icon that says, HP Director or
something like that. This is where you can access the scan, copy and fax
options.

I just ran a security test on

using just my router and nothing else. The software firewall was turned off
for this test and it passed very well I am glad to say. Now this only
protects against incoming and not out going requests I must point out. For
outgoing requests you will still need a software firewall and there are
several free or low cost alternatives available. So I am feeling quite well
regarding my systems security at this time, but make no mistake security
must be of top priority for all of us these days.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Fax Machines with Jaws

2008-04-05 Thread Denny Huff
I don't know of any stand alone fax machine, but most of your HP 3 in 1
printers work well with Jaws. All of the functions such as, copy, print,
fax and scan pictures are very accessible with Jaws.
I can get a model number if you are interested.

Is there such a thing or something that is a stand alone fax that works

If not, is there a plain copy machine that anyone has used with good success

they can recommend?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Fax Machines with Jaws

2008-04-05 Thread Annette
I personally have not seen an accessible stand-alone fax machine. I've seen
set ups using a PC, a scanner and fax software that is accessed with JAWS.
Unfortunately, I do not have the name of a fax software package that plays
nicely with JAWS, as it has been quite some time since I've looked into
this.

Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG INCOMPATIBILITY

2008-04-05 Thread John Justice
Marilyn, AVG Internet Security considers anyone with a working version of
their software as a customer. They hope that someone like you and me will
eventually purchase the professional version because of its improved
capability. You too have a registration number for your AVG. Every time
you download the version and activate it, that particular copy, I believe,
is assigned what is called a "license number" rather than a version number.
That is what AVG Internet Security wants but only because they can help
with specific problems for that version.

If you press F1 while AVG is open, you'll find some rather interesting
information. There is one choice called "System" which will show your
license number as well as other particulars. At least, that's what I'm
told.

Re: [Blind-Computing] As A Blind personHow Do I Indicate a Website linkIn My E-mail:

2008-04-05 Thread John Justice
Greetings, Mubanga. When adding a link to the text in a message, you would
normally preceed the link itself with something like the following. "You
can find the information we are discussing at the following Internet
address.
http://www.jaws-users.net
The key is to avoid adding any additional characters, putting the link on a
separate line and providing an eye catching statement which will prepair the
reader to find the information.

As for making links active, most links which are correctly transmitted in an
e-mail message are active. All someone needs to do is "click" on them and
the system will do the rest.
I hope this helps.
