It's an html element standing for: non-breaking space, as in a space between
two words that wouldn't render onto a new line in terms of word wrap etc.

Means your emails are seeming to render their HTML source to a certain
extent or something.

Hi:

Does anybody know what   happens to mean? I'm finding it throughout a lot
of my email messages, and my sighted husband says it actually shows as such on
the screen so I know it's not a JAWS issue, but what is it? It drives me crazy

I stop it? It doesn't happen to be in what I'm sending, does it?

Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG or Avast?

2008-06-11 Thread Roger Bachelder
Hello Bill,

I've switched from the free version of AVG, to the free version of Avast a
few weeks ago. I've noticed that my computer does not hesitate when the
virus data base is being updated, unlike AVG. The only thing that you will
need help with is , when registering Avast, you will need a pair of eyes to
get the 3 digit code on the register page.
Once you install Avast, you will need to make a few changes to make the
program very accessible. I have a email saved here that Chris hallsworth
posted a while ago on how to make the adjustments.
But besides that, Avast works great for this blind guy!

HTH

Hi all, do the following two things to make Avast more accessible.
Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface:
1. Start Avast.
2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that
appears. You should now land on a dummy check box.
3. Press the applications key to open a context menu, down arrow to settings

and press enter. The Programme Settings dialogue box appears, with the
categories tree gaining focus.
4. Tab until you hear, "enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked". Press space to uncheck it.
5. Tab to ok and press enter. You'll land back on the dummy check box.
6. Close and restart Avast. You should now be able to tab through the
controls in this programme.
Configuring JAWS to read lists in Avast:
1. Make sure that you're focused on the Avast Simple User Interface.
2. Press JAWS key 6 to open Configuration Manager.
3. Press enter to accept the New Configuration File dialogue box.
4. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a. The advanced
Options dialogue box appears.
5. Shift tab till you hear, "Rely on MSAA for List Views check box not
checked". Press space to check it.
6. Press enter to activate the ok button.
7. Either press control s to save your configuration file immediately, or
press alt F4, pressing enter to activate the yes button on the confirm
dialogue box.
By doing these steps, you'll resolve an issue on some machines whereby JAWS
stops speaking when focused on any of the lists in Avast.

I know this has been a disjointed thread on this list before, but which is
preferred; AVG or Avast? I am totally blind with no usable vision at all.

Re: [Blind-Computing] I found a Trojan in Goldwave!

2008-06-11 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Bob,

I am using 5.24 and have found the exact same file.

I run weekly scans of my system using Norton Anti-virus, No Adware and
ZoftSpy, and none of these utilities have picked up that file as a Trojan.

I've even got a file named unstall.log, which would obviously tie into the
unstall.exe file you are referring to.

Either way, deleting it shouldn't make a difference in GoldWave's operation,
since it seems to be the uninstall utility for GoldWave, judging by the
name.

This may very well be a false positive, as someone else mentioned.

Maybe its because I have Goldwave version 4.26 but my only unstall.* file is
*.log.

Do all later versions of Goldwave have a file named unstall.exe?

Hi. No, I think it's a false positive. This is why I'm not keen on AVG to be
honest, as to me it flags genuine programmes as actual viruses, and this is
one good example, flagging GoldWave to be a virus. Avast won't do this.

Re: [Blind-Computing] I found a Trojan in Goldwave!

2008-06-11 Thread Alasdair King
Our software was flagged as a virus for a day - like lots of assistive
technology, it does things like key hooking that can look suspect. We
reported this to AVG and they fixed it in the next update. So yes,
false positives, but speedy resolution in our case.

Cheers,

That's good to know. I've never seen a Trojan show up on this old computer

Didn't know that AVG was known for false positives.

Hi. No, I think it's a false positive. This is why I'm not keen on AVG to be
honest, as to me it flags genuine programmes as actual viruses, and this is
one good example, flagging GoldWave to be a virus. Avast won't do this.

Re: [Blind-Computing] selecting a item in a combo box

2008-06-11 Thread Imbar Golt
I am, its not a usual combobox, as I wrote before. I do everything that I
should with Jaws and in most comboboxes it works. This one does not let you
browse through the selections before you pres enter to select. As soon as i
hit enter, or press down arrow, when I am in forms mode and after I have
done alt down arrow to get into the combo box. It selects the first thing I
land on.
Cheers,

[Blind-Computing] I found a Trojan in Goldwave!

2008-06-11 Thread DoubleLegal
Hello everyone,

This kind of freaked me out.

I just downloaded and installed the new Security updates for Windows XP this
morning. As they were being installed, I walked away from my computer. When I
got back, my AVG Anti Virus had popped up saying it had found a Trojan Virus.

I had also updated my AVG software at about 5am, but had not run a computer
scan.

I moved the virus to the virus vault and then got it's name and what program it
was in. Turns out it was in Gold Wave. Looks like it would have been activated
if I ever uninstalled Gold Wave.

Here's the name of the virus and where it was located:

Trojan Horse Downloader.banload.wpr
c:\program files\Goldwave\unstall.exe

Scan your computers!!

Re: [Blind-Computing] selecting a item in a combo box

2008-06-11 Thread David Griffith
Alt arrow down normally does the trick on difficult combo boxes. If this is
not working it may be a case for the Jaws Cursor to have a go. Do you have a
link to the offending page and combo box to see if we can get it to work?

Unfortunately some pages are simply not accessible to speech software but we
can have a go.

Regards

David Griffith

Once you hit enter on the combo box, try doing an alt down arrow instead of
just down arrow.

Hi,

How can I select something in a combobox, when I press a letter it gets me
out of forms mode and onto the first selection in that letter, which I do
not intend to select?
Thanks,

Re: [Blind-Computing] Internet Explorer Keystroke Question

2008-06-11 Thread Mike Williamson
The keystroke to accomplish this is CTRL and the plus or minus key on the
numpad (plus to increase and minus to decrease)

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Internet Explorer Keystroke Question

Hi Folks,

Sighted users are able to hold down the control key, then scroll the wheel
on the mouse to increase or decrease the fonts on web pages without having
to muss or fuss with the menus and stuff.

Wondering if there is such a keystroke to accomplish the same task?

There is a long winded explanation, as to why I need to know this, but the
gist of it is that a friend comes to her computer, using Jaws 7 and Internet
Explorer 6. She has no problems using her computer, however, when ever my
brother goes over there to help her with some computer issue she might be
having, the fonts in IE are always set to the smallest font. She says that
neither she nor her sighted daughter are doing this, so I'm wondering if she
might be doing this inadvertently?

She's also trying to figure out if her daughter might be doing the same
thing, possibly not realizing it?

This is an XP home machine, and my brother can't seem to find any rhyme or
reason why a sighted person would need to use the control+scroll wheel on a
mouse on any web pages.

We do know that this utility is available in both Internet Explorer and
Microsoft Word, which uses this combination of the control+wheel up or down
to zoom into the document and out, respectively, so I'm also wondering if
MSN employs such a utility, or something other than these two utilities that
may employ such a utility, as it may be getting crossed over to IE?

We have shut down Jaws to ensure that this is not a video intercept issue,
and we have rebooted the system multiple times, both with and without Jaws,
so we are convinced that Jaws is not the issue.

We have also confirmed that, once set to the correct font, it does seem to
stay at the correct font, so we are certain that something happens between
my brother's visits, and we need to pinpoint what it could be.

In any case, this is a bizarre conundrum that we'd like to get to the bottom
of.

Thank you all in advance.

Re: [Blind-Computing] new way for cooling chips

I imagine that whatever liquid is used in these miniature pipelines, it will
need to be purified. When you think about how common household plumbing
gets rank with "growth" that would surely fudge up such a miniscule system
very quickly.
