[Blind-Computing] Battery for XP Desktop Computer
Hi all, My tech is supposed to come back with a new battery for my UPS and to finish dismantling my LAN. He took away the '98 machine and, now, only the XP computer is left. It's more than 3 years old and, after my tech left, I starting thinking that since he has to return and it's just the one machine, that maybe it would be a good idea for him to replace the battery on the XP. Are there any guidelines about the life of an XP battery? I guess it probably depends on how much the machine is used, defragged, etc. About how much does a new XP battery cost? Does one size fit all? The machine is a tower type and was custom built. If one size doesn't fit all, is there any way of determining what kind of battery to get except getting under the hood? Re: [Blind-Computing] Battery for XP Desktop Computer
Are you talking about the MOS/BIOS settings battery that's mounted on the motherboard as such? If so, the only real way is to either take the physical battery out of the machine, or to look up the specs of the motherboard on the internet, but anyway... Jacob and All, Is there another battery in the computer besides the MOS/BIOS settings battery that's mounted on the motherboard? I'm asking about whatever battery/batteries that might die and make the machine useless until replaced. How do I get the specs of the motherboard and find out what model etc. it is? Re: [Blind-Computing] Battery for XP Desktop Computer
Not in the computer itsself as such, but you also mentioned a UPS in that post. Honestly, the simplest is to get a technician to look at the physical battery since there are generic ones as well which would be a bit cheaper than the original ones from the motherboard manufacturer. Basically, when these batteries lose their charge, then you might find that if you turn off the computer for a bit, then when you try turn it on, it wouldn't have remembered what hard drives etc. it had in since those settings are stored in the BIOS memory, and that might stop it from booting up. Some later computers would automatically scan them, reset the values, and carry on from there, but not sure if/when that became more common anyway. Another thing that could occasionally cause these settings to be lost was in fact static electricity - either transmitted by simply touching the casing if it wasn't properly insulated from the internals, or if the casing was left open for whatever reasons, but this might not be relevant at all nowadays. [Blind-Computing] CD Question
When I would insert a CD into my computer a box used to pop up giving me options of what I wanted to do with it. It no longer does that. When I pop in the CD and close the door, it automatically goes to Windows Media Player and starts playing. I have removed WMP from my system and now when I pop in the CD, a box opens wanting me to install WMP. How can I get the options box to come back up when I close the door? Re: [Blind-Computing] CD Question
What operating system? In WinXP, I just browse to My computer, using Windows key + E, and tabbing over to the drive listing, make sure the CD/DVD player is highlighted/selected, then hit Alt + Enter for it's properties, and in that dialogue box, there is a page for autoplay, and if you go down the content type list to music CD, you can then tab around and get it to prompt you etc. etc. HTH Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...Fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: Donnie Parrett [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Blind-Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: 12 August, 2008 10:54 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] CD Question When I would insert a CD into my computer a box used to pop up giving me options of what I wanted to do with it. Re: [Blind-Computing] Help with Excel.
Hello, John. John Justice here. Excel is built on a grid system in which the horizontal rows are numbered and the vertical rows are lettered in their default configuration. Before it is modified, Excel will present an almost limitless number of rows in either direction. The problem is getting the finished product onto a print page. It is possible to identify the vertical columns with labels or, if you prefer, to label each horizontal row. When it's printed, to refresh your memory, Excel forms a printed set of boxes, so many across and usually 25 rows deep. NAVIGATION WITH JAWS: The Jaws 9 is an excellent tool for working with Excel. For basic navigation, the Alt Control Down Arrow is what moves your operating cursor up and down while the Tab and Shift Tab keys make it possible to navigate horizontally. Jaws provides some really well designed scripts which will allow you to move quickly from one place to another. All of the basic Jaws function keys are listed in the manual. I believe that some of them are also available in a Quick Help option which is accessible by pressing either the Insert W or Insert H keys. In the Jaws manual, you will find a main title called Key Strokes and if you press Enter on that title, then press F6, one of the links is for spread sheets and financial information. Within that choice, you will find an entire book of instructions for the navigation of Excel using Jaws. I hope this helps, John. Excel is not an easy program to use but it is very Jaws friendly. A lot of work has gone into programming Jaws to work with this spread sheet.
