Re: [Blind-Computing] Virtual box

2009-01-12 Thread Parham Doustdar
Virtual Box creates a virtual computer inside your computer. It may seem
like a complicatedd subject, but once you work with the program it's rather
intresting.

Is Virtual Box created by the Sun Macro systems? If yes, that is the only
one that worked for me. VMWare and the rest didn't.

Aiden, it doesn't work. 2.1 is not properly accessible and it even
crashes if you try to right click some things. Go for VMware.

Has anybody tried out virtual box 2.1? I've tried to install it but
something's up with my machine, it won't finnish the install, and I
heard looking back at the change log that there was an accessibility
plug in starting from 2.0.4 or something.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cell phone confusion.

2009-01-12 Thread jeremy
Hello larry. Hopefully I can help you out a bit with this as far as I know
it anyways. If you are with a sprint or verizon network, wich is CDMA you
have to go with some sort of pocket pc phone and install mobile speak,
either the smart phone version or mobile speak pocket for pocket pcs. As was
said earlier, if on a gsm network like at&t or t-mobile we have a bit more
options and can use talks or the simbion version of mobile speak. Have a
look at mobile speaks sight and it has a listing of phones that it will
support and what network they work on.

Hi folks,

I am an all tel subscriber and would like to know what if
any of the speech accessible phones and software packages
are available on their network.
I really don't understand the nexus between hardware and
network capability. My pea brain tells me that if for
example a particular phone is accessible on one network it
should be accessible on all networks, this however does not
appear to be the case.
Any help you folks can provide in untangling this mess would

2009-01-12 Thread Lino Morales
Well the LG line of phones does support text messaging. The LGVX 9100 better
known as the Envi 2 supports this. It will read aloud any messages you
receive. There is a newer model called the LGVX 8600, but don't know what
kinds of features it has yet. And no you don't have to change providers. If
you are interested in texting, you of course need to upgrade your plan to an
unlimited texting one or one that allows a certain amount of texts you can
send per month. The plan my wife has up to 500 text messages per month. HTH.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Accessible site for testing internet speed

2009-01-12 Thread Donald Marang

I like to use SpeakEasy.net to test my broadband speed. It is found at:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

It uses Flash and has meters for the sighted. But it is accessible. Just
press Enter on a city of your choice and wait a short while. All the
destination buttons are clearly labeled. The results within the Flash
object is not clear, but the results are clearly repeated immediately below
the Flash object. Does anyone know the navigation key to quickly get to the
end of an object?

Additionally, the Verizon help desk usually asks me to test my speed at
their site:

http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/hsi/

This is a two page process, but it is accessible. I think they have a
simpler URL to type into the address bar. The above is what was saved in my
favorites.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cell phone confusion.

2009-01-12 Thread Lino Morales
Larry,
First of all, welcome to the Verizon family once the merger is 100 percent
done that is. Well, there are 2 software packages for cell phones that are
accessible. The Talks program and Mobile speak program. These to opperate on
the GSM network which Altel has and runs on phones that run the Simbian
operating system. Now Verizon and Sprint run on the CDMA network. None of
the above will work with CDMA. LG does make a few models of somewhat
accessible phones. Hope this helps. Your bro in Christ,

Any help you folks can provide in untangling this mess would
be greatly appreciated.

BTW

What the hell is an unlocked phone and should I care?

Sherrie, this really opens the flood gates.

One of the most frustrating things for a visually impaired cell phone user
is to have some, but not all of the menus, spoken. If someone could
develop

a way for the cell phone and the PC to be linked so that changes could be
made on the cell phone through the screen reader and connecting software
on

the computer, that would be a break through. Even the best talking cell
phones have limitations which Jaws doesn't usually have.

Now as for the PC itself, how about developing the technology so that Jaws
or another program can read those annoying digital images that are
commonly

used on many web sites as a security measure. Even the latest version of
Jaws cannot read those images and that is incredibly frustrating. You are
literally denied access to these sights without vision.
So far, as far as I know, no one has developed a completely reliable way
to

translate those digital images into something we can use.
Here's an example.
On the Vanguard web site, you have to choose an image which will then be
used in any future connections to the site. If you don't choose the
correct

image, you don't get on the site at all.
The images in this example are things like a building, a gate, a tree,
etc.
How in the name of Heaven can a blind person do that without trying to
place

a label on these links. I tried that but for security reasons, the images
are shown in a random display which means that the building might be at
the

top of the list, at the bottom or somewhere in between. Jaws is a great
program but that, it can't do as far as I know.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Windows 7

2009-01-12 Thread Chris Hallsworth
If you use VMware and the easy install feature, then providing you enter the
product key during the easy install part of the new virtual machine wizard
then yes it is possible to install 7 without sighted assistance.
Alternatively you can attempt to make an autounattend.xml, but this is time
consuming in my view and you have to know XML etc. Another alternative is to
first install XP or Vista then run the 7 setup from within Windows. Hope
this helps.

Hi all,
What have been your experiences upgrading to Windows 7? I've currently
got Vista Ultimate on this laptop, but would like to try 7. I find this
decision difficult because I can't dual boot because Vista's disk
management won't let me shrink my C drive unless I shrink it to no more
than 700MB. Also, if I did upgrade, would you advise and actual upgrade
or a custom (clean) install. If the latter, how has hardware detection
been for you? Also, before the beta expires can I simply downgrade back
to Vista whilst I'm in Windows 7? Thanks in advance for any advice
regarding this.

Hi all,
What have been your experiences upgrading to Windows 7? I've currently
got Vista Ultimate on this laptop, but would like to try 7. I find this
decision difficult because I can't dual boot because Vista's disk
management won't let me shrink my C drive unless I shrink it to no more
than 700MB. Also, if I did upgrade, would you advise and actual upgrade
or a custom (clean) install. If the latter, how has hardware detection
been for you? Also, before the beta expires can I simply downgrade back
to Vista whilst I'm in Windows 7? Thanks in advance for any advice
regarding this.

Sherrie, this really opens the flood gates.

One of the most frustrating things for a visually impaired cell phone user
is to have some, but not all of the menus, spoken. If someone could develop
a way for the cell phone and the PC to be linked so that changes could be
made on the cell phone through the screen reader and connecting software on
the computer, that would be a break through. Even the best talking cell
phones have limitations which Jaws doesn't usually have.

Now as for the PC itself, how about developing the technology so that Jaws
or another program can read those annoying digital images that are commonly
used on many web sites as a security measure. Even the latest version of
Jaws cannot read those images and that is incredibly frustrating. You are
literally denied access to these sights without vision.
So far, as far as I know, no one has developed a completely reliable way to
translate those digital images into something we can use.
Here's an example.
On the Vanguard web site, you have to choose an image which will then be
used in any future connections to the site. If you don't choose the correct
image, you don't get on the site at all.
The images in this example are things like a building, a gate, a tree, etc.
How in the name of Heaven can a blind person do that without trying to place
a label on these links. I tried that but for security reasons, the images
are shown in a random display which means that the building might be at the
top of the list, at the bottom or somewhere in between. Jaws is a great
program but that, it can't do as far as I know.

before the beta expires can I simply downgrade back to Vista whilst I'm in
Windows 7? Thanks in advance for any advice regarding this.
