[Blind-Computing] expanding tool bars

2009-06-27 Thread Mark
Hi
I have been having troubles with my college website. I need to post a
certain number of message posts on particular class websites. Starting in JAWS
10 the text boxes where one posts text messages disappeared. So, I tried
satogo.com. This worked for a while but now it is giving me mixed results. One
message I did receive was that the tool bar was collapsed. Is there a function
in JAWS 10 or IE 8 that will automatically expand all tool bars? IF not how
does one expand the tool bars manually?
 I appreciate any ideas.

God bless,

Hi John,
If you have what's known as, "packet-writing" software,
then you can format a re-writable diskand treat it as it were a floppy
disk.

In other words, you can copy, paste, and erase files and folders,
as you would with a standard floppy disk, only with more capacity.
I have used this software in the past, and had mixed results.
When I started computing years ago, this is how I used to backup my files,
but found that the backups were not reliable.
These days, flash drives, and external, or even internal hard drives are
so inexpensive, that
it is more affordable to backup your files to them, instead of re-writable
cds.
Occasionally, I will use a re-writable to test the function of a custom
disk before burning it to a cdr,
other than that, I don't have any real use for them, and only keep about 4
or 5 of them on hand.

Hi John,
I would opt for another backup media.
A re-writable cd or dvd would not make a reliable backup.
If you left the disk open, you would have to burn another session, and
more than likely,

you would just end up with another batch of files.
You would be better off with a flash drive, or external hard drive, and
a replicator program to

backup only the changes to your files.

up the same info again with changes does it only save the changes or
puts another group of files with a different date with the same data in
them?

If you create a google account and use iGoogle, you can add all kinds of
gadgets of news, whether, quotes, etc. It's reasonably accessible. I use it
myself and have no problem with it. I actually rather like it and would not

You can download the Talking Desktop Clock from the JAWS Users programs
page. It's item 15 under the Utilities heading. Be sure to read the

Hi Ken,
Press enter on Avast in the system tray, and hit enter on the stop
on-access protection option.

You will get a dialogue warning you, just spacebar the yes button.
When you are finished, just go back to the system tray, and press enter on
the start on-access protection.

I believe I asked this some time back but I've lost the notes I made. I
need to turn Avast anti virus off in order to install a program. I then
need to turn it back on. How do I do this?

I'm using the free version of Avast.

Thanks,

Ken

Re: [Blind-Computing] backing up your data on a rewritable cd

2009-06-27 Thread Rick Justice

Hi John,
I would opt for another backup media.
A re-writable cd or dvd would not make a reliable backup.
If you left the disk open, you would have to burn another session, and more
than likely,

you would just end up with another batch of files.
You would be better off with a flash drive, or external hard drive, and a
replicator program to

backup only the changes to your files.

I was wondering if you back your data on a rewritable cd and then back up
the same info again with changes does it only save the changes or puts
another group of files with a different date with the same data in them?

Re: [Blind-Computing] favorite home page

2009-06-27 Thread Gerald Levy

Sounds like IGoogle would be perfect. I use it as my home page. Just go to
Google.com and select IGoogle. The iGoogle page contains local and national
news headlines and local weather conditions and forecast. And the page is
fully customizable and screen reader friendly . It also contains a direct
link to Youtube which is handy.

A student has asked for recommendations for a straightforward web page
containing news and information, easily navigable, and perhaps
customizable

to allow for local content or special interest topics. Any suggestions?

hello there;

I thought I would send this along. maybe, some of you, will find this
useful.

David Bales has written a Jaws guide to Internet Explorer 8, the vast
majority of which will also benefit users of other screen reading programs.
It is available at:

if the tiny URL does not work, the link is

Speaking of JAWS and Internet Explorer 8, the latest incremental upgrade
adds some enhanced support, as well as adding support for Windows 7 and
enhancing support for Access 2007:

I appreciate your input. I am going to install IE 7, just as soon as I can
figure out how to turn my Avast anti virus off. Tried to install earlier
and it suggested I turn it off. I tried to install without turning it off
and it wouldn't allow me to do that.

So, IE 7 will have to wait a little longer.

Thanks again.

Ken,
I've had no problems with IE 7 nor 8 so far. The differences in these
versions is that you have tabbed browsing. I like it cause you don't have
to
open up another web page in another new window. I also like the RSS
