[Blind-Computing] Remote desktop

2009-10-13 Thread Marek Durila

Hi all,
I don't how it's possible, but one my friend said to me, that with his
friend they tried on one computer Jaws and next one without Jaws and from
the computer, where was Jaws installed, he was able set many tasks on
another computer.
But as you wrote and as it's written in manual, Jaws must be on both
computer needn't it?

[Blind-Computing] Problem with modem and printer

2009-10-13 Thread DoubleLegal
Hello everyone,

My mom is having trouble getting connected at times to the internet through her
dial-up ISP and also having some troubles with her printer. I have tried to
figure it all out without success.

Here are the problems.

1. She uses a dial-up ISP called blue light. Sometimes when she is on the phone
talking to someone, the modem will kick in and try to connect her to the ISP.
At other times, she can't get connected at all when trying to get on-line.

2. She just replaced an ink cartridge in her printer. Now, the printer doesn't
print anything in the color green. It will print all other colors, just not
green.

My thought was the modem was set to re-dial at different times. But checking
that I found out it was not set to do that anywhere. She has an alarm system
that uses the phone line to send diagnostic reports to her security company at
different times. I think maybe that security system may be causing some
problems. Has anyone else had any problems with security systems conflicting
with their dial-up?

Now, sometimes when she can't get connected to her ISP, she can shut down her
computer, re-start it and then be able to get connected.

She is using XP Home and her dial-up connection goes through Internet Explorer
to for her internet browsing. She doesn't know what version of IE she has, uses
AVG suit for her firewall and anti-virus.

Any suggestions on what maybe I can tell her to try would be very, very
appreciated.

I have to try to help her over the phone as she lives in another town.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Re: [Blind-Computing] Remote desktop

2009-10-13 Thread Stewart A Overbey, Jr.

Marek,

I was exploring the Remote Desktop feature with JAWS 10, and was able to
connect to another computer, however, since it didn't have JAWS, it didn't
work. I contacted Freedom Scientific, and they told me that I had to pay
extra, around $200, to unlock that feature.

You can, however, try connecting using JAWS Tandem feature, which is
designed for receiving or giving technical support to or from another
computer.

I hope this helps,

[Blind-Computing] Windows Music Not Playing At Startup

2009-10-13 Thread Debbie G

Hi all,

I find this quite interesting to say the least.

All of a sudden, as of yesterday, when my computer is starting up and/or
shutting down, I don't hear the windows music any more. I went into the
control panel, to sounds and audio devices, to the sounds tab to make sure
everything was fine there and it is.

Does anyone know what the deal is here?

I appreciate any help.

Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Using Audacity

2009-10-13 Thread Bill Gallik
OK, I've heard from members of this list that Audacity is the way to go insofar
as getting slices of audio files. How would one go about taking a slice of an
MP3 file, say from second 43 to second 58, and saving it in a 15-second sound
clip of MP3 persuasion?

Does the MP3 encoder need to be installed? If so, where one be gotten?

Is this something a totally blind user could do? Are there JAWS scripts to
facilitate the interface for Audacity? I'm finding that there's a lot of
buttons on the screen that are not labeled.

You have to download the lame MP3 encoder to get it to export directly to
MP3 files - think there's a link to it in that tutorial page I sent you last
time, and it also tells you how to implement it.

Apart from that, Ctrl + Shift + I would let you import the said file, and
you would then be in the selection section of it's interface, Ctrl + F6 will
take you to the next relevant section, tab to the start and end controls and
move left and right into the relevant HH, MM, SS sections and type in the
values there, but tab in and out to double the settings/selections.

You would then, on the file menu, choose export selection, and there you go.

I also initially just let it export .wav files and then converted them
myself, but if you look at that tutorial page, and search it for lame,
you'll find the mention of downloading and installing the mp3 encoding.

Stay well

Re: [Blind-Computing] Help Needed with InterVideo WinDVD 8

2009-10-13 Thread Donald Marang

Hi Mark,

There are very few DVDs with Descriptive Video included. Evidently, the
blind community has not made it known by sales that they are interested.
Here is a list from the WGBH, the PBS station in Boston, website. WGBH
invented TV captioning and video descriptions.

Hi Don,
Actually, I was just trying to set up the basic functions of the
player to always choose the descriptive video if it was available. I will
have to check to see how they would switch to a different audio track. I
wonder where one finds the Descriptive audio DVD's?

Hi Mark,

Are you sure the DVD has an alternate audio track with Described Video?
It would be available as a different audio track, just as other
languages are provided. I have not found many DVDs with Described Video
available.

I am not familiar with that application, so I do not know if it also has
hotkeys. Some programs, such as PowerDVD from CyberLink use Control + L
to switch languages / audio tracks.

Hi
My acer laptop computer came with InterVideo WinDVD 8 pre-installed.
This is a program for playing DVD's. I am able to access most of the
functions by using the application key on my keyboard. What I need to
know is is there a way to turn on descriptive video? I didn't see it as
an option under the language settings for subtitles.

God bless,

[Blind-Computing] How to read messages in Miranda window

2009-10-13 Thread Chris Feist
Hi. I got a pre-configured version of Miranda installed and it's working.
I had a question about the chat window when I'm logged on to MSN. When an
instant message comes in, I have to back tab from the input edidt field to
the history window to read the message. It isn't automatically spoken.

In the past, before Miranda, I used MSN Messenger, and incoming messages
were spoken automatically. And I also could hear the previous messages
again by hitting alt 1, 2, 3, etc. I wonder if something similar can be
done in Miranda? Maybe JAWS scripts are needed? Not sure. Maybe some of
you Miranda users would have some tips that would help. I'm still using
JAWS 10 at present and XP Pro. Thanks for any help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Using Audacity

2009-10-13 Thread Jacob Kruger

Just went here again:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.2-Guide.html

And it worked, apart from where you'll see have changed one or two of it's
links due to some changes they don't seem to have implemented, and the
section on lame says:

---
Download a copy of the LAME encoder. This is available from a number of
websites, for example the MP3 page of the Rarewares website, whose address
is

http://rarewares.org/mp3.html

A direct link to the zip file which you need to download is: lame3.97.zip.
(this has now been moved/recompiled), and here's a link to a page where you
can find the new version):

http://rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php

navigate to the level 3 headings, and look for this one:
LAME 3.98.2, and look for the download referral link below it.

The only file which you need from this zip file is lame_enc.dll. Note that a
zip file is treated as a folder in Windows Explorer. Copy the file
lame_enc.dll to another location on the disk: for example, create a LAME
folder in either My Documents or C:\Program Files, and copy lame_enc.dll to
that folder.
You now need to tell Audacity the location of the file lame_enc.dll, and
this is described in the next section.

Location of LAME MP3 encoder library
To tell Audacity where to find the LAME MP3 encoder library:

In the Audacity Preferences dialog, select the File Formats category.
TAB to the MP3 Export Setup: Find Library button, and press it.
A dialog opens asking you whether you would like to locate the file
lame_enc.dll. Press ENTER to press Yes.
A Where is lame_enc.dll? dialog opens which has the structure of a standard
Open dialog. Navigate to the file, select it, and press ENTER.
You are returned to the Audacity Preferences dialog. Note that if you now
want to press the default OK button, you have to first TAB to move away from
the Find Library button, and then then press ENTER to press the default OK
button.
