[Blind-Computing] fact or fiction;

2009-11-22 Thread Dan Mccurley
Is it true that putting an external drive in the freezer that is thought to
have died will allow some or all of its content to be gotten off of it? I
think my external has died, or crashed, or something; when I turn it on it
tries to spin up to its normal spinning velocity but on the way up, it makes a
click sound and begins at the beginning again, never reaching its end speed.
Is it dead or can someone retrieve the data on it. Help with this will be
appreciated.

2009-11-22 Thread Silly Goose
It was certainly fiction in my case. I tried it and noticed that as it
heated back up to room temp that there was a lot of condensation on the
outside and on the inside I presume.
It did not work. I never did get around to sending back the defective hard
drive since the packing instructions from the company were too complicated.

Now, my goal is to be sure that everything is stored in at least two places.
I really like the replacement external drive I bought a lot better since it
is much smaller in size and does not need to be plugged in to an electric
outlet, just into the laptop.

Hi Dan,

I know of a couple of people who have done what you are asking. The reason
for it is to get the harddrive as cold as possible so that it takes longer
for it to heat up and crash. The longer the drive can run before
overheating the longer you have to extract information from it. Hope my
explanation makes sense. Take care.

[Blind-Computing] More About Coby MP3 Player

2009-11-22 Thread Gerald Levy

Well, it turns out that the Coby MP200 MP3 player may be blind accessible after
all. I did a little research, and discovered that the Coby MP200 is similar in
design to the discontinued Creative Zen Stone that caused such a stir in the
blind community when it was first introduced a couple of years ago. Like the
Zen Stone, the Coby MP200, which is about the size of a pack of chewing gum,
has a concentric ring surrounding a Play-Stop/Power button on its front panel.
Pressing and holding it for 5 seconds turns the unit on. Pressing the top of
the ring increases the volume, and pressing the bottom of the ring decreases
the volume. Pressing the right side of the ring skips to the next track, while
pressing and holding it scans rapidly forward through the current track.
Pressing the left side of the ring skips to the previous track,, while pressing
and holding it scans rapidly backward through the current track. That's it.
It has no display screen or navigation menus to deal with, just a LED power
indicator. Unlike the Zen Stone, the Coby unit has no shuffle play mode, so
you can only listen to tracks in the order they were downloaded, which,
presumably, can be easily accomplished using simple Copy and Pate command.
With 2gb of memory, it has twice the storage capacity of the Zen Stone, and as
an added bonus, it can be used as a flash drive for data storage. It plugs
directly into a USB port, but also includes a separate USB cable as well as a
set of earbuds. It runs on a single replaceable AAA battery (included) which
is said to provide up to 8 hours of playing time, rather than a sealed,
nonreplaceable rechargeable battery, which, for me, is a big plus. So I went
ahead and ordered one from J&R. For ten bucks with free shipping, how can you
go wrong?

Friends I'll try to explain this a bit.
You know how for example when you click on a and this is usually the
case in .mp3 files.

You get the file download do you want to open or save?
I'm not getting that.
Quick time is playing the files instead of winamp. that's what I want.
i want winamp to play the files if I choose to open them.
How do I fix this?
i'm using windows xp and jaws 11. and IE 8.

2009-11-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
If you do try freezing it, make sure it's well sealed first to avoid any
moisture condensation, and apart from that, yes, some technical guys might
be able to try salvage data off of it, but they're not normally all that
cheap/easy to find, so you can try this freezing thing first, but, like
others said, try it in short stints as such, and try copy the most important
things off first.

Just to mention that this sort of spinning up and clicking thing might also
just be that while the drive is working alright, it's no longer
communicating with the computer properly anymore, and that could be due to a
defective cable as such, etc.

Well, it turns out that the Coby MP200 MP3 player may be blind accessible
after all. I did a little research, and discovered that the Coby MP200 is
similar in design to the discontinued Creative Zen Stone that caused such a
stir in the blind community when it was first introduced a couple of years
ago. Like the Zen Stone, the Coby MP200, which is about the size of a pack
of chewing gum, has a concentric ring surrounding a Play-Stop/Power button
on its front panel. Pressing and holding it for 5 seconds turns the unit
on. Pressing the top of the ring increases the volume, and pressing the
bottom of the ring decreases the volume. Pressing the right side of the
ring skips to the next track, while pressing and holding it scans rapidly
forward through the current track. Pressing the left side of the ring skips
to the previous track,, while pressing and holding it scans rapidly backward
through the current track. That's it. It has no display screen or
navigation menus to deal with, just a LED power indicator. Unlike the Zen
Stone, the Coby unit has no shuffle play mode, so you can only listen to
tracks in the order they were downloaded, which, presumably, can be easily
accomplished using simple Copy and Pate command. With 2gb of memory, it has
twice the storage capacity of the Zen Stone, and as an added bonus, it can
be used as a flash drive for data storage. It plugs directly into a USB
port, but also includes a separate USB cable as well as a set of earbuds.
It runs on a single replaceable AAA battery (included) which is said to
provide up to 8 hours of playing time, rather than a sealed, nonreplaceable
rechargeable battery, which, for me, is a big plus. So I went ahead and
ordered one from J&R. For ten bucks with free shipping, how can you go
wrong?

Re: [Blind-Computing] why is this stupid quick time playing my files?

2009-11-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
Would guess that quicktime has taken over the file type association of MP3
files etc.

Simplest fix is to find an MP3 file in windows explorer and right click on
it, choose open with..., choose program and in that dialogue, choose winamp
from list and make sure checkbox for making it default is checked before
clicking on Ok.

This might not necessarily stop internet explorer from trying to decide for
itsself though, but might.

Friends I'll try to explain this a bit.
You know how for example when you click on a and this is usually the case
in .mp3 files.

You get the file download do you want to open or save?
I'm not getting that.
Quick time is playing the files instead of winamp. that's what I want.
i want winamp to play the files if I choose to open them.
How do I fix this?
i'm using windows xp and jaws 11. and IE 8.

Hi Kim,

At the bottom of this email you can find all of Gerald's info and a direct
link to this product. You can also order by phone at 1-800-806-1115. I
placed a phone order for a few of these players this morning. The direct
link is right above Gerald's name. Hope this helps. Take care.

From; Gerald

Well, it turns out that the Coby MP200 MP3 player may be blind accessible
after all. I did a little research, and discovered that the Coby MP200
is

similar in design to the discontinued Creative Zen Stone that caused such
a stir in the blind community when it was first introduced a couple of
years ago. Like the Zen Stone, the Coby MP200, which is about the size
of
a pack of chewing gum, has a concentric ring surrounding a
Play-Stop/Power

button on its front panel. Pressing and holding it for 5 seconds turns
the unit on. Pressing the top of the ring increases the volume, and
pressing the bottom of the ring decreases the volume. Pressing the right
side of the ring skips to the next track, while pressing and holding it
scans rapidly forward through the current track. Pressing the left side
of the ring skips to the previous track,, while pressing and holding it
scans rapidly backward through the current track. That's it. It has no
display screen or navigation menus to deal with, just a LED power
indicator. Unlike the Zen Stone, the Coby unit has no shuffle play mode,
so you can only listen to tracks in the order they were downloaded,
which, presumably, can be easily accomplished using simple Copy and Pate
command. With 2gb of memory, it has twice the storage capacity of the
Zen

Stone, and as an added bonus, it can be used as a flash drive for data
storage. It plugs directly into a USB port, but also includes a separate
USB cable as well as a set of earbuds. It runs on a single replaceable
AAA battery (included) which is said to provide up to 8 hours of playing
time, rather than a sealed, nonreplaceable rechargeable battery, which,
for me, is a big plus. So I went ahead and ordered one from J&R. For
ten

bucks with free shipping, how can you go wrong?

Subject: [Blind-Computing] More About Coby MP3 Player

Re: [Blind-Computing] More About Coby MP3 Player

2009-11-22 Thread David Griffith
This is extremely useful information . Thank you.
I was alarmed about your news of the discontinuation of the Zen stone. I
did have a look on the UK EBay site where they are still a few available. I
bought one as a backup. Although the Zen cannot compare with things like the
victor reader it is great for just putting round your neck whilst doing
something else like exercising.

I use the Zen stone to demonstrate to people learning to use a screen reader
how it is possible to transfer files easily using explorer and then listen
to audio books. If the accessible version of the Zen stone disappears I
will need to identify a replacement . .

It will be good to hear your experience of the Coby.

Regards

David Griffith

Re: [Blind-Computing] why is this stupid quick time playing myfiles?

2009-11-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
It gets used to specifically play certain file types, like .mov files, but
they're not too common since I'm pretty sure that's almost like a
macintosh's version of a WMV file, but so you could either try just setting
options to make it not appear in system tray/auto start, or you could
uninstall it for now, since would guess that you might not need it too
often, and pretty sure other, useful media playing software, like VLC media
player can also play .mov files.

Tonight, I discovered that microsoft.com has a little program listed on the
home page that might interest other listers. It is called upgrade advisor
and you download it in readiness to see if your present computer will take
the windows 7 upgrade. It landed on my programs page but I have not let it
run yet. THere's a submenu item to check when you are ready to let it scan
your present computer. No one else has mentioned this so I thought I would.
Hope it works. Marilyn
