[Blind-Computing] Reading Emails
Hi I am using Outlook Express and when I went to read messages this morning I found that under options/read messages in plain text was unchecked so I checked it which enabled me to read messages but now when I open a message and jaws begins to read after a second or so it says use your reader keys to read the text then it continues reading the email. This has never happened before. Am using JFW 11 and XP. How can I get it to just read the email without the annoying use your reader key to read text. Just double checking, because I E 7 has been working fine, but once in a while, I get to a web site or such telling me I should update my browser! Thanks for your comments! [Blind-Computing] update for XP
Hi have just found an update for xp which says Install this update to restrict AutoRun entries in the AutoPlay dialog to only CD and DVD drives. Is it wise to install this or just ignore it. I do remember seeing something on this list about it but didn't pay any attention to the response. [Blind-Computing] Defrag
Hi when I went to run a defrag it came up with this message Disc defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume c. Please run chkdsk/f. What do I need to do to run the defrag on drive C? I do have an external drive connected but don't wish to defrag this. Step by step simple instructions to achieve the above would be appreciated. Re: [Blind-Computing] THE FUN OF BEING BLIND AND USING A COMPUTER SCREEN
Yes I have experienced the screen being up the wrong way as I discovered when I had a sighted friend come help me when my speech died. Goodness how long the screen had been the wrong way up. Pam Mahuika Nelson NEW ZEALAND Skype: pam mahuika - Original Message - From: "John Justice" To: Sent: Friday, January 28, 2011 12:03 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] THE FUN OF BEING BLIND AND USING A COMPUTER SCREEN I thought some of you might enjoy this experience. Every year, my wife Linda and I put on a presentation at a local school. The event is called "Acceptance Day" and it is scheduled on the Friday before martin Luther King's birthday. The school makes an effort to show their sixth, seventh and eighth grade students how people with physical impairments and other physiological or cultural differences, get along from day to day. here's where it becomes a computer related story. I usually bring my laptop computer and set it up in such a way that the screen is facing the audience, while I am using a USB keyboard behind it. it's a silent but effective demonstration indicating that we don't need to use the screen to work with a computer. I usually write a brief document and then allow jaws to read it through some portable speakers. I set up the computer and turned it on. The girl who was our escort for the day was very hesitant but she did tell me that the screen display was upside down. I fixed it by going to the Control Panel and then to Display. Sure enough, there were settings for what Microsoft calls the "flip" position. I have no idea why anyone might want to do that but there it was. How long that screen had been upside down, i have no idea. After all, as a blind person, I never pay attention to what the screen is showing. No you don't ever need to do that just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when you desire the other provided you have a hot key for it shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start. For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws 11 and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot key for jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use control alt s and use system access as well. never shutting down my computer once Keep Smiling, Janie Degenshein Access Tech Consultant Facilitator of ECHO Co-host of OTBS On The Bright Side www.thruoureyes.org/brightside.html jdege...@comcast.net -Original Message- From: yvonne oliver Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 2:12 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Text to speech software? hello Gerald thank you for replies to save clutter of traffic i will answer both now 1 n v d a, you have a point there so i shall go ahead and install n d v . a then if disaster strikes with jaws like you said i will still have a screen reader and of course i can always delete it if not to my liking. but if it takes no room at all and does no harm while not in use then i may as well leave it there. i do pose one question though when i restart my computer will jaws still be the default reader? and how do i switch from one to the other and back again. do i have to restart the computer each time for example restart once to get jaws restart again to get n d b a and restart a third time to get back to jaws? 2 sticky keys i thought that was what it was but needed to make sure first of all hopefully it is not too slow i only really want it for use on skype talking 9 for such things as preference changes reading of voicemail and things like changing mood text and online status so no real need to be extra fast there thank you for your help - Original Message - From: "Gerald Levy" To: Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 6:57 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Text to speech software? Once you install NVDA, it's a good idea to keep it as a backup in case JAWS crashes. This way, if you ever lose speech, you can just press the hot key for NVDA to launch it so that you can determine the problem. Also, NVDA is useful for navigating web sites that JAWS may have trouble with. You can always uninstall NVDA if you don't like it.
