Re: [Blind-Computing] Pearl Camera

2010-10-22 Thread Russ Hubley
I am generally quite happy. As I have written on this list before, my main
strong point is that I can use it in classes in an easier manner. As I have
also wrote, I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of junk left over
when a graphic/picture is present.
If you are going to use this with a laptop, I would strongly suggest that
you have a faster processor than my netbook. It still scans quite fast, but
the delay is in the processing of the pages if you have used one of the
multiple page options. I also have found that when in the aacquire and read
option, my netbook stumbles as these pages are being processed.
Luckily, I have a larger laptop with a faster processor. This works very
well without the above mentioned problems.

Could someone with a Pearl try it if you have other OCR SOFTWARE like Abbyy
FineReader or Omnipage as personally I think the Pearl is designed only to
work with Open book 9.

Openbook does save as an image I think. Pearl does require a computer to
operate. This is what I meant when I said that it won't sub for a standalone
scanner such as things like the sara.
But it will replace a "regular" scanner.
Much faster!!

Rick,

Thanks. I can download Open Book 9 and see if there an option to save
something one scans as an image.

When you say you can't substitute the Pearl for a scanner, can you elaborate
more on what it won't do that a scanner will?

Rick,

Thanks. I guess we can do this on list as it does pertain to computers and
others may find the answers to my questions helpful.

What is prompting my inquiry is my current scanner (an all in one feed
through HP) and OCR software (OmniPage pro 15) leaves many limitations. Many
times what I want to scan I can't because I can't feed it through the
scanner. From what I've read it sounds like the Pearl can be used as a
scanner and/or OCR all in one. Unfortunately I also understand one needs
Open Book 9 or higher to go with it. Not being an Open Book user that is an
expensive piece of software. Anyway here are some question:

1. Can the unit be a substitute for a stand alone scanner?

No
Once you snap a picture of a memo, letter, etc is there an option to save
the picture as an image or only as a document following the OCR process?
Many times I like to scan things and keep an electronic copy of it but not
necessarily OCR it. I think so but have never used this functionality.

How good is the OCR when it performs the function?
I have omnipage 12 and openbook is much better.

Lets start here, thanks again
