Well, it also seems that software doesn't do too much more than try to
allow you to manage the content on your reader hardware, since when someone
tried installing it here at work, they reckon it wants account details, and
doesn't seem to have much in it relating to actually trying to read
anything as such.

The kindel pc software is free. Of course, the downloads aren't but that's
ok. Personally, I think it's time for the proliferation of proprietary book
readers to somehow get together. AUdible.com books won't play on the
kindel, etc. and on and on. It seems to me that the Victor REader Stream
could be modified so that we could play kindel books on it. AT least,
Amazon would be able to sell the book downloads. marilyn

The software doesn't cost anything. there is a problem, though. I had the
same problem as the others when trying to download the software so, I had my
boyfriends sighted assistance and completed the registration. You only have
to put in the email you use for signing into Amazon and your password you
use there as well but you have to have a sighted person to use the mouse to
click on the edit boxes to fill in that info. After I got that done, I still
am unable to use the software. I have a book that I purchased from Amazon
some time ago that you read on a kindle so, I was going to try it with the
software...nothing happens. The Kindle software screen pops up when clicking
on the book title (I have it saved in My Documents) and that is it. there is
nothing on the screen as far as screen readers are concerned. I haven't
asked my boyfriend yet if the book is displayed on the screen yet...I
thought I'd let everyone know about the software first...so, it's still not
accessible after registration.

Re: [Blind-Computing] The Kindle Book Reader

2009-11-12 Thread Mark

Hi
After reading that there was a software version of the Kindle Book
Reader, I did some research on Amazon and found a link that appeared to want
to down load the software. Then just like was reported on the list a
registration window popped up that is in accessible. After setting JAWS to
unrestricted I noticed that there was some strange text that said things
like 1 KB. I am not sure what that is. Three things have come to mind.
First, perhaps the fire wall/anti virus is blocking it communicating to the
internet? Second, if this is a webpage perhaps my pop up blocker is blocking
the next window from showing? Finally, if by some strange twist of fate the
down load speed is actually 1 KB then it is going to take a long time for
that registration window to display. I was not able to test any of these
ideas but perhaps someone else might find them handy. All I can do to help
at the moment is offer ideas on where one might start looking for the
answer.

God bless,
Mark

Ok, just tried it myself now and, yes, couldn't carry out the
registration process.

Will maybe get a sighted person to have a look tomorrow at work, and
let's see...but, yes, irritating...

Stay well

Jacob, I tried it and it quits at the registration point. Internet
explorer
gave a security warning before the download started so i went ahead and
did
the installation directions but it stopped on the registration. Would
like

to hear others' experiences. marilyn

[Blind-Computing] The Kindle Book Reader

2009-11-11 Thread Francis E. Khan
There was a time when the Kindle reader offered so much and I want to know
whether there is an audio facility to read books to vi people. How much does
it cost and are the books expensive to purchase?
