[Blind-Computing] Using Audacity
OK, I've heard from members of this list that Audacity is the way to go insofar as getting slices of audio files. How would one go about taking a slice of an MP3 file, say from second 43 to second 58, and saving it in a 15-second sound clip of MP3 persuasion? Does the MP3 encoder need to be installed? If so, where one be gotten? Is this something a totally blind user could do? Are there JAWS scripts to facilitate the interface for Audacity? I'm finding that there's a lot of buttons on the screen that are not labeled. Re: [Blind-Computing] Using Audacity
You have to download the lame MP3 encoder to get it to export directly to MP3 files - think there's a link to it in that tutorial page I sent you last time, and it also tells you how to implement it. Apart from that, Ctrl + Shift + I would let you import the said file, and you would then be in the selection section of it's interface, Ctrl + F6 will take you to the next relevant section, tab to the start and end controls and move left and right into the relevant HH, MM, SS sections and type in the values there, but tab in and out to double the settings/selections. You would then, on the file menu, choose export selection, and there you go. I also initially just let it export .wav files and then converted them myself, but if you look at that tutorial page, and search it for lame, you'll find the mention of downloading and installing the mp3 encoding. Went to that web page -- or should I say I tired to go there -- but got an error message that the site couldn't be found. Re: [Blind-Computing] Using Audacity
Just went here again: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.2-Guide.html And it worked, apart from where you'll see have changed one or two of it's links due to some changes they don't seem to have implemented, and the section on lame says: --- Download a copy of the LAME encoder. This is available from a number of websites, for example the MP3 page of the Rarewares website, whose address is http://rarewares.org/mp3.html A direct link to the zip file which you need to download is: lame3.97.zip. (this has now been moved/recompiled), and here's a link to a page where you can find the new version): http://rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php navigate to the level 3 headings, and look for this one: LAME 3.98.2, and look for the download referral link below it. The only file which you need from this zip file is lame_enc.dll. Note that a zip file is treated as a folder in Windows Explorer. Copy the file lame_enc.dll to another location on the disk: for example, create a LAME folder in either My Documents or C:\Program Files, and copy lame_enc.dll to that folder. You now need to tell Audacity the location of the file lame_enc.dll, and this is described in the next section. Location of LAME MP3 encoder library To tell Audacity where to find the LAME MP3 encoder library: In the Audacity Preferences dialog, select the File Formats category. TAB to the MP3 Export Setup: Find Library button, and press it. A dialog opens asking you whether you would like to locate the file lame_enc.dll. Press ENTER to press Yes. A Where is lame_enc.dll? dialog opens which has the structure of a standard Open dialog. Navigate to the file, select it, and press ENTER. You are returned to the Audacity Preferences dialog. Note that if you now want to press the default OK button, you have to first TAB to move away from the Find Library button, and then then press ENTER to press the default OK button.
