Norman,
Most USB sound cards will operate, at lieast in a rudimentary fashion, even
without installing the drivers.

Hi.

Are there any external sound cards that do not require any software
instelation?

I need one because I will be working on computers where the sound has been
disabled.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

Hi
 I have to say that I paid about 2 to 5 U. S. dollars on E-Bay for a
cheap sound card that only has one output and one microphone jack. I read on
one of the computer users lists that someone recommended having a USB
headset because if the audio was accidentally muted on one's computer the
USB audio device in the headset over road the settings in the sound card.
This was something I thought might be helpful especially if one is moving
from one computer to the next frequently.

God bless,

Really depends on your physical location/preferred sources..?

I, here in South Africa, found a local computer shop that sold me a USB
sound card of the brand, astrum, which seems to sort of immediately get seen

as sort of default sound output on both the windows XP and windows7 machines

have tested/tried it out on, and it actually seems to show up, in the
operating system, as a realtek sound card, but that could be internal
hardware or something like that.

Main thing is haven't tested it on any machines with their own sound
disabled/muted, but, thus far, roundabout 5 seconds after plugging it into
both test machines, it starts working sort of automatically.

Stay well

Hi
I have tried a few of the cheap sound cards off from E-Bay. They were
the USB type. The software as I recall installed itself. However, one had to
access the volume control through the operating system. The default volume
was very loud.

Usually a USB device. You plug it into an available USB port, Windows
will recognize it instantly in most cases, install appropriate drivers in
most cases, and you'll have sound.

Re: [Blind-Computing] external sound cards

2009-04-29 Thread Mark
Hi
I bought a cheep USB sound card off EBay for $5 plus shipping. It came
from Honkong. The sound quality wasn't great but it was acceptable. I never
could figure out how to get the sounds from the computer to go to the native
sound card while sending JAWS to the USB card. So, I stopped using the USB card.

Hi Kathy,

I bought a Turtle Beech USB "Sound Card" from buy.com about a year ago; it
only cost about $25.00. One problem I've encountered with this "Sound Card"
is that voice inflections in JAWS are not transmitted through the device.
But that's a small price to pay for the luxury of having two sound devices
on board your PC.

One other caveat that you may want to know about in advance, you need a set
of earphones to use the Turtle Beech USB sound card. Or you could plug
regular speakers into it as well I suppose. But that seems like a lot of
clutter on your desk if you already have a set of speakers hanging off the
native sound card. The nice thing about a secondary sound card is that you
can instruct JAWS (if you use JAWS that is -- of course) to transmit through
the secondary card so any applications deploying sound through the primary
card can have an acceptable volume setting and there won't be the problem of
all those sounds -- including JAWS -- overriding each other.
