XP home will handle 2 GB, the professional can handle 4 GB. I had read on more than one occasion that win XP, especially the 32 bit version simply won't recognize the full 4 GB of ram I chose to install when I built my system, and was OK with that. After the change in video card, however, my system is only recognizing 2.5 GB of ram. The technician actually came back out to investigate, as I was convinced that a ram chip may have come lose during the installation of the video card. As it turns out, all of my memory is physicly fine; is recognized by the motherboard and by software like cpuz with no problem. The tech informed me that the decrease actually happened when I installed sp3, but I can't help thinking that this is inaccurate, since, like I said above, I am pretty sure that I can remember having 3.0 gb of ram before the video card change. I realize that on the whole, the ram decrease probably isn't a big deal, but it does seem that JFW loads a bit slower when I start my system. I guess I just want some other opinions for my own piece of mind, and to know whether or not I should look into this further or just accept that this is the way things are now. If in fact you're sharing memory then no way will you pick up the entire amount. Now having said that the fact is your memory card shouldn't be sucking up probably no more than 256. Normally they take 128 such as what is on my wife's system. Hi Missy, How did you confirm that RAM size when you checked it? Was it during boot up and you saw the RAM counter count out the memory on your system, or did you go through a program on your computer? If you go to the My Computer icon on your desktop, then press alt+enter to get to the properties, the system properties will pop up. You'll have to use your virtual cursor or mouse simulation keys, and since I don't know which screen reader you're using, or magnifier, I can't advise you on what keystroke will give you these functions. Suffice it to say, if you arrow down the information, it will give you your processor speed and memory amount in that dialog box. Let us know what it says there, and we'll see if there really is anything wrong with your memory. Secondly, some video cards use, not only onboard memory on the video card for it's use, if it finds it needs more, it will share the memory with the RAM on your computer, so it could be that you're video card is misappropriating some of that memory for itself. Another possibility is the fact that he may have shorted out one of the sockets, or fried one of your memory chips, in which case, the only way to diagnose this is to swap it out for another memory chip and see if it gets recognized. Either way, we'll have to get more information.
