Hi,

you get free updates anymore or not? My system crashed thanks to ms

I did run the scan and it detected all the ports I need to be allowed to

A last screen popped up regarding the firewall stuff such as it detected

my LAN settings and gave me 3 options...allow all, block all and stand
alone computer*I chose this last one*
Also a couple of box's to be checked and I didn't check either and last
2 were for a name so the firewall can use that name when it loads and a
profile and I chose no profile.

I did check within the AVG through my systems tray and found I am fully
protected and the firewall is fully functioning. So I guess I did that
right and I wonder if that last screen was just personal info if you
chose to set it up that way?

I have to remind y'all the last time I tried to install this, I got a
screen saying I had to uninstall Office and Outlook Express which I did
 neither and canceld it.
Since that time, I have installed Office 2003 and would you know...that

Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8

2009-01-07 Thread David Griffith
I am getting a little disillusioned with AVG and its Firewall. I rung
their technical support a few months ago and they told me I had to upgrade
to version 8 before they could address a Malware infection on my PC. In the
event they could not help anyway and I had to restore my PC from a Ghost
image to resolve the problem. Nevertheless I upgraded to version 8 to try
and prevent future problems. The problem is that in version 8 accessibility
with Jaws has plummeted.

Seeing the issues today about what settings the Firewall should b on I
rang AVG technical support . Like others I had chosen the allow all setting
as opposed to block all or stand alone PC. AVG tech support said that
actually none of these options suited a PC user with a home network linking
to a laptop for example. It seems that because of the hidden nature of the
appropriate settings I have been incorrectly keeping the setting on allow
all and receiving minimal protection. No wonder I have been having to resort
to Super Anti-Spyware!

They recommended that the Firewall configuration wizard be run completely
from scratch and apparently from this wizard there is an option to select
Computer and Domain as an option, this option does not appear in the main
settings of AVG 8 . Apparently you can then nominate a name for your home
network which does not have to correlate to your actual home network name.
This option will apparently allow you to have firewall protection and use a
home network. The other advice was not to try and modify existing settings
as this apparently causes problems. Start with a completely new
configuration wizard..

The problem is that I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to locate the
Configuration Wizard for the Firewall within a very flaky User interface. I
have been using the Jaws cursor and the PC Cursor. At the moment I am able
to locate a Firewall button using the Jaws cursor but no amount of real or
virtual mouse clicking will activate this button. Space or enter will not
work on this button either. You can enter Firewall settings through the menu
but again I cannot find a button to start the configuration wizard. I'll
try restarting the PC in a minute to see if that accessibility can be
improved.

Given that home networks are pretty common these days I am quite annoyed
that the default installation of AVG appears to lead you into a risky
Firewall setup. If anybody else can set up computer and domain as the
profile within the AVG 8 firewall I would be very glad to hear how they did
it.

Further to my last post I went into AVG advance Firewall settings for stand
alone PC as this was the only accessible part of the program I could find. I
set it to find networks.

On my PC restart AVG detected the Home network but the only options allowed
again were to block stand alone or allow. As I wanted my home network I

interface the entire firewall settings have been changed back to allow all,
the settings I had been advised not to have. So I am no further forward and
I am presumably running a PC at risk. Very frustrating. I cannot understand
that a part of the software that is obviously designed to detect home
networks does not have the option to select the appropriate home network
settings. Calling these settings computer and domain is also not very
helpful or intuitive.

I am now minded to switch to another anti virus / internet security package
even though I have a year of AVG licence left. . Does anybody know if AVAST
supports home networking more intelligently?

OK - I finally got there and I did not have to ring AVG technical support.

In summary What I did was
1. run Jaws 10 in demo mode. Oddly this has now had the effect of making
Jaws 8 work better with AVG and I no longer have to use Jaws 10 in demo
mode. What I found was that you should just use the cursor keys to navigate
the window and avoid using the tab key. On my setup using the tab key
tended to make Jaws lose focus.
2. Run the configuration wizard and select computer and domain as the
Firewall profile type.
3. Restart your PC.
4. This was the confusing bit . Go back to AVG Firewall settings after
restart . What I found was that although I had run the configuration wizard
this had not actually changed any settings at all and I was still stuck on
stand alone PC. What had happened however, was that computer and domain had
been added as a setting to select via a check box.
5. Check this computer and domain setting and execute the save settings
button.

Finally my home network reappeared on my Laptop and hopefully for the first
time ever I am getting proper Firewall protection.

The good news is that Jaws 10 demo did indeed provide access to AVG firewall
settings that my Jaws 8 could not reach. The bad news is that despite the
AVG advice I have now been locked out of my home network after setting up
the configuration wizard under computer and domain profile!

Back yet again to AVG tech support I suppose.

They recommended that the Firewall configuration wizard be run completely

The problem is that I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to locate the

I did leave the stand alone computer as is, but that wasn't listed..
I did have to select it or I think in the set up process it already was. I
routed jaws and found a list and that was the likely choice pertaining to my

I did check within the AVG through my systems tray and found I am fully

I have to remind y'all the last time I tried to install this, I got a

neither and canceld it.
Since that time, I have installed Office 2003 and would you know...that

network which does not have to correlate to your actual home network name.
This option will apparently allow you to have firewall protection and use
a
home network. The other advice was not to try and modify existing
settings

as this apparently causes problems.

You can enter Firewall settings through the
menu

but again I cannot find a button to start the configuration wizard

well it popped up again soon as I turned on my computer. So this time, I
chose to check the box to not tell me if it finds a new or detection of my
LAN, why would I need it to tell me this and it's not changed...

I did leave the stand alone computer as is, but that wasn't listed..
I did have to select it or I think in the set up process it already was. I
routed jaws and found a list and that was the likely choice pertaining to
my situation.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8

Hello,

I just installed the AVG 8 and all that went fairly well. I just had a
concern in regards to the firewall settings and was wondering if anyone
on here might be using this and can tell me what exactly should I check
or not check for the firewall settings.
I did run the scan and it detected all the ports I need to be allowed to
go through the firewall.

Since that time, I have installed Office 2003 and would you know...that
never popped up during the install of AVG 8.

to make sure it's correct.
Before he'll stick his head out.He wants to know what he's talking about.

As I understand it Shannon, the only program which is negatively
 impacted
 by
AVG 8 is Jaws. Hmmm! I never thought of opening Narrator. That's an
  interesting idea.

Hi, I understand you have to close jaws when opening the interface for
 AVG
8 but does that also mean you can't have narrator or any other screen
reader running while opening it as well?

Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8 free edition

2008-05-13 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, AVG 8 Free Edition is not compatible with any JAWS version so far as I
can tell. I suggest you give Avast a try. The Home Edition is free, however
registration requires sighted assistance as visual verification is required,
however if you contact Avast Support they should give you a key. Hope that
helps. P.S. Go to www.avast.com to download it.
