Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8
Hi, I have avg 8 free edition on my machine but it still finds updates. So can you get free updates anymore or not? My system crashed thanks to ms explorer and it corrupted jaws as well but I thought avg 8 wasn't free anymore. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8
I am getting a little disillusioned with AVG and its Firewall. I rung their technical support a few months ago and they told me I had to upgrade to version 8 before they could address a Malware infection on my PC. In the event they could not help anyway and I had to restore my PC from a Ghost image to resolve the problem. Nevertheless I upgraded to version 8 to try and prevent future problems. The problem is that in version 8 accessibility with Jaws has plummeted. Seeing the issues today about what settings the Firewall should b on I rang AVG technical support . Like others I had chosen the allow all setting as opposed to block all or stand alone PC. AVG tech support said that actually none of these options suited a PC user with a home network linking to a laptop for example. It seems that because of the hidden nature of the appropriate settings I have been incorrectly keeping the setting on allow all and receiving minimal protection. No wonder I have been having to resort to Super Anti-Spyware! They recommended that the Firewall configuration wizard be run completely from scratch and apparently from this wizard there is an option to select Computer and Domain as an option, this option does not appear in the main settings of AVG 8 . Apparently you can then nominate a name for your home network which does not have to correlate to your actual home network name. This option will apparently allow you to have firewall protection and use a home network. The other advice was not to try and modify existing settings as this apparently causes problems. Start with a completely new configuration wizard.. The problem is that I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to locate the Configuration Wizard for the Firewall within a very flaky User interface. I have been using the Jaws cursor and the PC Cursor. At the moment I am able to locate a Firewall button using the Jaws cursor but no amount of real or virtual mouse clicking will activate this button. Space or enter will not work on this button either. You can enter Firewall settings through the menu but again I cannot find a button to start the configuration wizard. I'll try restarting the PC in a minute to see if that accessibility can be improved. Given that home networks are pretty common these days I am quite annoyed that the default installation of AVG appears to lead you into a risky Firewall setup. If anybody else can set up computer and domain as the profile within the AVG 8 firewall I would be very glad to hear how they did it. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8
OK - I finally got there and I did not have to ring AVG technical support. In summary What I did was 1. run Jaws 10 in demo mode. Oddly this has now had the effect of making Jaws 8 work better with AVG and I no longer have to use Jaws 10 in demo mode. What I found was that you should just use the cursor keys to navigate the window and avoid using the tab key. On my setup using the tab key tended to make Jaws lose focus. 2. Run the configuration wizard and select computer and domain as the Firewall profile type. 3. Restart your PC. 4. This was the confusing bit . Go back to AVG Firewall settings after restart . What I found was that although I had run the configuration wizard this had not actually changed any settings at all and I was still stuck on stand alone PC. What had happened however, was that computer and domain had been added as a setting to select via a check box. 5. Check this computer and domain setting and execute the save settings button. Finally my home network reappeared on my Laptop and hopefully for the first time ever I am getting proper Firewall protection. well it popped up again soon as I turned on my computer. Hello I'm still unsure of 2 things. Is there an avg8 free version or the pro version only for $54.95? If there is a free version where is it as unable to locate it. Could only find a 30 trial version and not a free version. regards -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chris Hallsworth Sent: Friday, 16 May 2008 6:02 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8 Hi, as far as I know only JAWS users are affected. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8
Yes there is a free version of the program and for a short time it is residing on the programs page while my bandwidth limitations hold out for this month. I probably can't keep it up there without upgrading my server package. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8 free edition
Hi, AVG 8 Free Edition is not compatible with any JAWS version so far as I can tell. I suggest you give Avast a try. The Home Edition is free, however registration requires sighted assistance as visual verification is required, however if you contact Avast Support they should give you a key. Hope that helps. P.S. Go to www.avast.com to download it. -- Why not join my Blind Hobbyist group?
