[BlindHandyMan] How can You Stop Static Electricity

2006-09-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
How can you stop static electricity?
An electric charge is produced when two pieces of material are rubbed
together, such as silk and a glass rod, or when you comb your hair. Did you
ever
walk across a carpet and get a shock when you touch a metal doorknob. Your
shoe soles built up a charge by rubbing on the carpet, and this charge was
transferred
to you and was discharged on the knob. These charges are called static
electricity, and results when one material transfers its electrons to
another. Even
materials known as insulators (glass and rubber) can build up charges of
electricity. Static electricity occurs quite often when there is low
moisture
and the weather is cold and dry. It stands to reason replacing the moisture
would be a big help. Grounding is the best way of removing static
electricity,
but is not always practical. Placing humidifiers in heating systems can
help. Even sometimes just placing water next to heating ducts can help.
Moisture
in the air will be absorbed by the carpet fibers. The moisture in the fibers
will help to dissipate the electrical charge. There is also antistatic
sprays
that can be used. Newer carpets are being made with antistatic materials
already in the fiber.

[BlindHandyMan] What Causes lights to Dim

2006-09-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
What causes lights to dim?
If your lights dim when an appliance (fridge, air cond, etc.) comes on,
check to see if the lights are on the same circuit with the appliance. Most
fixed
appliances (fridge, air cond, etc.) should be on a dedicated circuit back to
the main panel. These devices draw quite a bit of current in the first
second
or so when they first start up.
If all the lights in your house are dim all the time or periodically, the
problem could be at the local utilities substation, transformer or their
service
feed coming into your house. This is one of the first thing you might want
to have checked.
Your lights could dim if the wiring in your house is not large enough, it
will have too much resistance. When a large current is present in the wire,
there
will be a significant voltage drop, leaving less voltage available to your
lights.
If the light in your house dim and also get brighter it could indicate a
lot more serious problem, a loose, broken or corroded neutral wire.
Electricity
is usually delivered to your home via three wires, two hot and one neutral.
Each 120 volt circuit taps one hot wire and the neutral. A 240 volt circuit
taps both hot wires. If the neutral wire comes loose, there is a risk that
the 120 volt circuits will, at least momentarily, be supplied with 240
volts.
The problem could be with the utility company connections, the main panel,
or the branch circuits.
For the three-wire cable, two of the wires will insulated. They are called
the hot wire (black) and the return wire (white). The third wire is
typically
a bare or green covered copper wire. The 120 VAC potential will be found on
the hot wire, while the return wire should be close to zero potential.
Current
will flow from the hot wire to the device and return along the return wire.
No current flows without a return path. There should always be the same
current
flowing in the return as there is in the hot wire.
But the return is not always at zero potential relative to your local
ground. For safety, there should always be a local ground. This is the
purpose of
the bare copper wire. It should be connected at one end to a conductor that
is buried into the ground. All metal electrical casings and electrical
outlets
should be connected to this wire.
If you are burning bulbs to frequently you also might try using lower
wattage bulbs. A 40 W bulb has a higher resistance than a 100 W bulb. Both
bulbs
will have the same voltage, the 100 W bulb must have more current. And that
means the 100 W bulb must have a lower resistance. So the filament for the
higher resistance 40 W filament must be heavier or have a smaller cross
section. There is also a rough service buld that is made with a heavier
filament.
The best bulb on the market today is the CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights)
(Philips, Sylvania). These bulbs may cost 10 to 15 dollars, but will last
about
10,000 hours.
Newer light fixtures require that the temperature rating of the wire
feeding these fixtures be at least 90 degrees C. This is the temperature
rating for
these light fixtures. It's important that the temperature rating for the
wiring feeding these fixtures match or exceed the rating for the fixture. If
the
temperature rating of the wiring is lower than the 90 degrees C. required,
the insulation around it becomes brittle and may break away. This allows
arcing
between bare wires, which causes heat that melts the fixture and could be a
fire hazard.
Look for the letters NMB on the jacket of the wire. The NM means
nonmetallic sheath cable (Romex) and the B suffix means that the cable's
conductors are
rated for a maximum operating temperature of 90°C 194°F. We can assume that
wiring made prior to 1984, without the B suffix, is rated at 60°C 140°F.
This
is the type of wiring found in most older homes that were built before 1982.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Ray,

Thanks for the research, it's much appreciated.

I have tried the traditional troubleshooting ideas, starting with the power
first, followed by the A B C's of medicine. They are, airway, breathing and
circulation. This is what medical professionals are taught to look for in an
emergency, so I looked to see if any of the vents were blocked or the fans were
obstructed, this was, of course, after I established that there was powered
going to the unit.

After that, I looked to see if there was circulation in the unit, in other
words, whether the power was flowing to the different parts of the laptop, but
I come to the exact same problem. How to determine if the power is flowing
through all the circuitry in the motherboard.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, I'm just too depressed over the life of my
laptop. It was very dear to me.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Max,

As I wrote to Ray, it's not a matter of whether the computer boots or not, I'm
simply not getting power to different components of the computer.

The screen is blank, the hard drive isn't spinning and the hard drive light
isn't lighting up.

I can only assume that there is a power flow interruption to these parts.
Aside from that, I can only assume that these parts were fried in some way,
shape or form.

As I said, the only way to determine if the power is flowing is to check the
circuitry on the motherboard itself.

That's why I thought of the continuity tester and whether it is able to tell if
there is a break in the circuitry.

victor,
If nothing comes up on the screen and nothing happens otherwise, only other
thing to try is a boot floppy or CDrom depending on what you have
If that doesn't work,you're fubar.
A continuity tester will be of no use and probably harm on any of those
connectors, even assuming you have the faintest idea what they do.

even a shop will usually just assume mother board and replace it, they don't
test or fix board level parts any more.

Sorry

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-07 Thread Tom Fowle
victor,
It does strike me that a battery with a shorted cell might give similar
results.

I don't know if those things are supposed to run with the battery removed,
if you know for sure, you could try that, but there are
many reasons why that might not work even if the battery is the
problem.

Of course you don't know, or do you, what the batteries terminal voltage
is, so measuring it might not help.

It might say on the battery or in the book what it should be
If it measures at or above what it is specified at, then the battery
is probably not the issue.
but if it, for example, is supposed to be 9.4 volts,
and the battery measures well under 9, then you may have a single cell
in the pack that's shorted.
In which case replacing the pack is the best answer.

If you dare to try it with battery pack removed and it boots, then also the
pack is the answer.

Tom

[BlindHandyMan] Mailbox post

2006-09-07 Thread rj
Here is what I did for the mailbox post. Took a 4x 4 x 10' and cut it in
half. Rounded the top cut end of one of the five foot pieces. Measured up 4
foot on that post and cut a groove half way through the thickness of the
post. The width of the 4 x 4 and cut a piece three foot long off the other
five foot piece at a 45 degree angle and cut a groove to match the first
groove on the five foot post. Tap the two pieces together and secured them
with screw. Cut a 45 degree angle on the remaining two foot piece and braced
up the cross piece with it . Bought a 4 x 4 ground bracket. Pound it into
the ground and took the post and placed it into the bracket and tighten the
nut to secure the 5 foot post and attached the mailbox to the cross piece
and it been there now for three years. When the snowplow hit it this year,
all I had to do was reset the post into the metal bracket and secure it with
the nut.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] kitchen drain trap

2006-09-07 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Terrie,

I am thinking you are talking about the plastic sort of trap?

The ring goes on with the narrow edge down so it is the narrow edge which
fits down into the opening of the 'U' shape. You then thread the nut over
the threads on the 'U' and take care not to cross the threads. Usually hand
tight should be enough, but a good hand tight. If it does leak a little you
can buy new wedge shaped rings. You need to know the size, usually inch and
a quarter but can be inch and a half or two inches.

Hope I understood you correctly.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Troubleshoot A Windshield Washer Pump

2006-09-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Follow these steps to determine why your windshield-washer fluid is not
flowing freely, and soon you'll be driving with clean windows again. The
problem
may be something simple like a disconnected hose, or dirt in the spray
nozzle.

Steps:
1.
Turn on the windshield washer with the engine off and the key in the On
position.

2.
Listen for a humming sound to determine whether the windshieldwasher motor
is operative. Open the hood and ask a friend to listen while you turn on the
windshield washer. If you don't hear any sound, check the fuses.

3.
Replace the fuse if it is blown
If the fuse is not blown and the motor is silent, have your mechanic replace
the windshield-washer motor. If you hear the motor humming, proceed to step
4.

4.
Check the reservoir and add windshield-washer fluid if its level is low or
empty. You can fill the reservoir right up to the top-- usually it doesn't
have
any full or empty indicators. Use a funnel to avoid spills.

5.
Check that the water is not frozen in the reservoir. This will only happen
in cold weather if you filled the reservoir with plain water instead of
windshield-washer
fluid.

6.
Make sure the small rubber hose that plugs into the windshieldwasher
reservoir is attached.

7.
Follow the hose to the rear of the hood. Check for crimped, torn or broken
lines. The line from the reservoir splits into two lines at the hood. If
damaged,
remove the line by pulling at the base where it attaches. Bring it to an
auto-parts store and purchase a hose of identical width and length. Install
it
and check for leaks.

8.
Clear any leaves or debris away from the area around the washerfluid nozzles
on top of the hood.

9.
Clear the washer-fluid nozzle's passage with a needle or a pin.

10.
Unhook the washer lines at the reservoir and at the hood, then force
compressed air through the lines to dislodge anything stuck in them.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Winterize Your Car

2006-09-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Winter can be rough on cars, so unless you live in a warm or moderate
climate, here's a list of things you can do to make sure your vehicle is
ready for
the upcoming cold season.

Steps:
1.
Don't put off a 30,000-mile full service, if your car is due.

2.
Flush the cooling system and replace the coolant.Use an Antifreeze.

3.
Replace the windshield wiper blades. Put windshield washer fluid in the
windshield washer reservoir (plain water will freeze).

4.
Have the battery serviced (clean the battery terminal ends and add water)
and load-tested to check its ability to hold a charge. If the battery is
more
than 4 1/2 years old, replace it.

5.
Use a tire gauge to check the tire pressure. Air contracts with cold, and
the tires may become low as the temperature drops.

6.
Make sure there is air in the spare tire and that all the proper
tire-changing equipment is in the trunk.

7.
Make sure the tires are in good condition. If you are not sure what this
means, ask a mechanic (in a shop that doesn't sell tires) for an opinion.

8.
Check the lights, heater and defroster.

9.
Keep the gas tank as full as possible to prevent moisture from freezing in
the gas lines.

10.
Get a brake check if you haven't had one in the last six months.

11.
Put together an emergency winter kit for the trunk of your car: blanket,
extra boots and gloves, ice scraper, small snow shovel, flashlight and kitty
litter
(for traction when stuck in the snow).

For the northern extremes, where you'll be starting the vehicle in colder
weather all winter long, you may want to consider getting an engine block
heater,
a batter heater, and possibly an oil pan heater. These are plugged into an
electrical cord, and keep the engine and battery warm enough to start, even
when it gets extremely cold. Also, it keeps the exhaust cleaner in the end.

[BlindHandyMan] How To Use Jack Stand Correctly

2006-09-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
The tire-changing jack that comes with your car is safe only for changing
tires - any under-the-car work requires the use of jack stands. Jack stands
are
easy to use, but it's imperative that they be placed in the correct position
under the car.

Steps:
1.
Set the parking brake and put the car in gear.

2.
Jack up the car using a floor jack.

3.
Place the jack stands under the car. Your car's owner's manual may have
illustrations indicating safe jack stand positioning.

4.
Lower the jack slowly until the car is resting on the jack stands.

5.
Note that if you don't have a floor jack, you can use the tire-changing jack
by raising up one side of the car at a time, as you would if changing a
tire,
and placing a jack stand first on one side, then lowering and removing the
jack, then repeating on the other side.

6.
Lean on the bumper and shake the car: If the jack stands aren't positioned
properly, you want to find out now - not when you're under the car.

Make sure both jack stands are raised to equal heights.

Warnings:

Never get under a car that's supported only by a jack - this is extremely
dangerous.

Don't put the jack stands under the floorboards - they'll crash right
through into the inside of the car.

When I have to do work that requires the car to be jacked up on jack stands,
I usually put the tires under the car. In case something goes wrong, the car
will land on the tires. I'd much rather replace a tire or two than an arm or
a leg.

[BlindHandyMan] Drill Doctor story

2006-09-07 Thread Mickey Fixsen
I purchased a Drill Doctor drill bit sharpener several years ago. It has to be
at least 6 or 7 years. They had just come out on the market not too long
before I bought it. The model that I bought was the one that would sharpen
drill bits up to 3/4. It would make both standard and split point drills and
sharpen masonary bits. I think it is a model 750.

I thought the unit was ok, but after a while I had some problems with it.
There are two chucks for holding the drill bits. One is for bits up to 1/2
and the other one is for bits on up to 3/4. The 1/2 chuck fell apart and it
was a bear to get back together! It has a bunch of fingers and little spring
clips that hold the fingers to the chuck. It took me over an hour to get the
parts all back together at the same time. Another issue was that the chuck
would not always rotate easily in the guide hole. I tried numerous things to
solve this issue, with little in the way of positive results.

I called Drill Doctor's home company to see if I could purchase a new 1/2
chuck and to inquire about the fitment problem. I must have owned the machine
for about 4 or 5 years by this time. The lady was extremely nice and asked me
a couple of questions about the machine itself. I remember that one thing she
asked me was if the unit had a slide switch or a rocker switch on it. I told
her that it had a slide switch. She told me that there were some issues with
that model and they would send me a complete , new unit. I gave her all my
address information and I recieved a new unit in less than a week. All that I
had to do was pay a bit of shipping to send the old unit back to them.

Needless to say, I was shocked and thrilled!!! The unit was way past its
warranty and I didn't expect them to do anything even close to replacing the
unit. The new unit will do all the same things that the old one was supposed
to do, and it does it a lot better. They have improved the way the chucks are
designed and the chucks fit and work properly in the ports on the eunit.

I am not convinced that it always sharpens bits as good as they were when new,
but it does a pretty good job. Another good thing is that it is totally
accessible to a blind guy.

These are a must for anyone who uses bits a lot. I can't say enough good
things about the company for standing behind their product.

Take care-- Mickey

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Oh rats.

2006-09-07 Thread Jim Ruby
Has anyone ever used the pest controllers that use ultrasound or at least a
high frequency that the pests do not like? I had some from finger hut a wile
back and I see ace hardware and walmart have them too. I have not had any
problem with any pests so far knock on wood.

I have used the sticky pads in the past. The ones which the professionals
leave are much, much more effective. The ones you can purchase, for the most
part, are not as sticky and just do not do the job. What is supposed to
happen is that the critter will try to chew the pad off and then get its
muzzle stuck and suffocate very quickly.
For larger mice these pads just do not do the trick as they seem to be able
to pull themselves off and leave you some nice mouse hair...
I really like the idea oa a Rat Zapper. Also, on e of the most effective
methods I have seen are the live traps. They are aluminum boxes the mice
crawl into and can not get out.
Without a source of water the mouse will die from dehydration in a matter of
hours. The dehydrated mouse also will not stink.

My personal way of dealing with the sticky pads is to have my husband and
son check them and then take the little guys outside to die. However, if I
had something on one and had to deal with it myself, I would use the tip
given to me by a friend of mine. She throws a towel over them and then
bangs them with a hammer. The whole thing then goes into the trash. Sounds
awful, but it is actually a much more humane way to go than a traditional
mouse or rat trap or the sticky pads.

Be careful when you buy the sticky pads. They sell these ones that are
supposed to be for bugs and rodents. They are just little flat pads, and
they work great for catching ants, but they have to be folded in some box
thing to catch mice. Even when folded they do not seem to work very well.
Make sure you get the ones for the size critter you want to catch. We get
the Tom Cat brand.

I have been learning a lot about them as we have had a lot of trouble with
mice where we live now. I think it is the ongoing construction and
development in the area.

Does anyone besides me find that you can just smell the little horrible
things after you know what the smell is? I can remember smelling that smell
before in people houses and not knowing what it was.

Jennifer
