Yes but will that not wreck the finish on wood surfaces?

Hi all,

Yesterday I took it upon myself to go over all the kitchen cupboards with
one of those sprays my wife bought. On the top edge of one of the doors, I
found a sticky substance that feels much like the glue on the back of a
sticky note. I tried rubbing it off with a paper towel but to no avail. I
then dampened a paper towel and tried using that. Again, no success. Not
having much experience with this sort of thing, I hesitate to try soaps and
solvents for fear of what they might do to the wood or finish of the door.
Anyone got any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Take care,

[BlindHandyMan] More on Home Made Cleaners

2006-11-07 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi
Making your own simple and effective products is fun
and economical. We think you will be happily surprised
with the results.

Air Fresheners

Most commercial air fresheners do not freshen the air
at all. Instead, they mask one odor with another, coat
your nasal passages with an undetectable oil film, or
diminish your sense of smell with a nerve-deadening agent.
For a safer alternative, you may wish to try one of the
following.

Ventilation. Open windows or doors in the house for
at least a short period every day. This will also help to
reduce toxic fumes that may be building up indoors.

Vinegar. Distribute partially filled saucers of
vinegar around the room or boil 1 tablespoon of white
vinegar in 1 cup of water to eliminate unpleasant cooking
odors.

Cinnamon and Cloves. Boil these spices for a fragrant
smell. For ease of cleaning, make a cheesecloth bag to
contain these spices, and boil the cheesecloth bag. An
excellent alternative when entertaining is to steep
spiced tea or cider.

Potpourri. Buy or make your own potpourri from your
favorite herbs and spices. Place the potpourri in a small
basket or jar or in small sachet bags.

Kitchen And Food Odors

Vanilla*. Place pure vanilla on a cotton ball in a
small saucer. Place the saucer in the car or refrigerator
to remove odors. It is reported to remove even skunk
odors. Keep the cottonball out of reach of children;
vanilla has a high alcohol content.

Baking Soda. Place a partially filled saucer of
baking soda on the refrigerator shelf. Replace every two
months and when you do, pour the contents of the used box
down the drain to remove odors and keep the drain clean.
Baking soda can also be used to deodorize bottles by
filling them with undiluted baking soda and allowing the
bottles to soak overnight. Then wash as usual.

Borax*. Empty the garbage frequently and clean the
can as needed. To inhibit growth of odor-producing molds
and bacteria, sprinkle 1/2 cup Borax in the bottom of the
garbage can.

Vinegar or Celery Stalk. To avoid or remove onion
odors from your hands, rub white vinegar on your hands
before and after slicing. Rubbing hands with the end of a
celery stalk will also remove the odor.

All-Purpose Cleaner

Vinegar and Salt. Mix together for a good surface
cleaner.

Baking Soda. Dissolve 4 tablespoons baking soda in 1
quart warm water for a general cleaner. Or use baking
soda on a damp sponge. Baking soda will clean and
deodorize all kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

Carpet And Rug Cleaner (See also Spot removers)

IF YOU PLAN TO SHAMPOO YOUR CARPET, FIRST TRY A PRE-
CLEANING TREATMENT. Sweep the carpet, which will make the
nap stand up and loosen the imbedded din. Next vacuum.
With this work alone, the rug should show a noticeable
improvement, so much in fact that you may decide to delay
the shampooing.

To neutralize odors: Borax* and cornmeal. Sprinkle the
carpet with a mixture of 1 cup Borax and 2 cups cornmeal.
Let this mixture stand for an hour before vacuuming.

Another alternative is Baking Soda. Making certain that
the carpet is dry, sprinkle baking soda liberally over
the entire carpet. Wait at least 15 minutes, or overnight
if the odor is particularly bad, before vacuuming.

Decal Remover

Vinegar. To remove no-slip decals from the bathtub,
saturate a cloth or sponge and squeeze hot vinegar over
decals. Vinegar also removes stick-on hooks from painted
walls. Saturate a cloth or sponge with vinegar and
squeeze the liquid behind the hook so that the vinegar
comes in contact with the adhesive. In addition, vinegar
can be used to remove price tags and other decals from
glass, wood, and china. Paint the label or decal with
several coats of white vinegar. Give the vinegar time to
soak in and after several minutes the decal can be rubbed
off.

Disinfectant

Soap. Regular cleaning with plain soap and hot water
will kill some bacteria. Keep things dry. Mold, mildew,
and bacteria cannot live without moisture.

Borax has long been recognized for its disinfectant
and deodorizing properties. Mix 1/2 cup Borax into 1
gallon hot water and clean with this solution.

Isopropyl Alcohol*. This is an excellent
disinfectant. Sponge and allow to dry. (It must dry to do
its job.) Use in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves.

Drain Cleaners and Drain Openers

Prevention. To avoid clogging drains, use a drain
strainer to trap food particles and hair; collect grease
in cans rather than pouring it down the drain; pour a
kettle of boiling water down the drain weekly to melt fat
that may be building up in the drain; or weekly put some
vinegar and baking soda down your drain to break down fat
and keep your drain smelling fresh.

Plunger. A time-honored drain opener is the plunger.
This inexpensive tool will usually break up the clog and
allow it to float away. It may take more than a few
plunges to unclog the drain. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD AFTER
ANY COMMERCIAL DRAIN OPENER HAS BEEN USED OR IS STILL
PRESENT IN THE STANDING WATER.

Baking Soda and Vinegar. Pou

[BlindHandyMan] Cleaning Products and Tips

2006-11-07 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi
Homemade Cleaners - Finding the Ingredients

Common basic ingredients used for most homemade cleaners can be bought in the
grocery store. If you want some of the more uncommon ingredients, here is
a list of where you can usually find them. Not all paint or hardware stores
will carry them; phone to find one that does, as some ingredients are not much
in demand today.
List of 14 items
* Acetone---hardware and drug store (is in nail polish remover)
* Art Gum---art supplies
* Boiled Linseed Oil---hardware or paint store
* Denatured Alcohol---hardware or drug store
* Fuller's Earth---hardware or drug store
* Gum Turpentine---hardware or paint store
* Neat's-Foot Oil---shoe repair shop or hardware
* Oxalic Acid---hardware or drug store
* Pumice Powder---paint or hardware store
* Raw Linseed Oil---hardware
* Rottenstone---hardware
* Stick Shellac---hardware
* Tung Oil---paint store
* Whiting---hardware (or school athletic department--used to mark white lines
on fields)
list end

Painted Walls and Woodwork

Use one of the following to wash painted surfaces: 1/4 cup ammonia and 1 gal
warm water, OR 1 tbsp trisodium phosphate and 1 gal warm water, OR 1/4 cup
liquid dish detergent and 1 gal water. To prevent streaking, begin washing at
the bottom of the wall and work toward the top; wash ceiling last. Rinse
thoroughly and change rinse water frequently.

Windows and Glass

Use one of the following mixtures to clean glass and windows: to remove soil
and grease, use 1/4 cup ammonia diluted in 2 qts warm water; to remove hard
water deposits and soil, use 1/4 cup vinegar diluted in 2 qts warm water; to
remove extra heavy soil and grease build-up, combine 1/2 cup ammonia, 2 cups
rubbing alcohol and 1 gal water.

Tips- When washing windows, wash sills and cross- pieces first wipe windows
with lintless cloth, paper towels or crumpled newspapers to prevent streaking,
wash windows out of direct sunlight for touch-ups, keep any one of the above
preparations in a spray bottle, spray on dirty area and wipe.

Upholstery

(Note: Commercial upholstery shampoos do a good job and are easy to use.
However, if you wish you can use the following homemade preparation.)

Combine 1/4 cup liquid dish detergent or laundry detergent and 1 cup warm
water. With a hand mixer, whip until dry suds form (the suds will look like
whipped
cream). Test upholstery in an unnoticeable area by applying dry suds with a
cloth or soft brush and lightly scrubbing. Allow to dry. If the area looks
the same but cleaner, the entire piece of upholstery may be cleaned in this
manner. Shampoo only a small area at a time and use a spatula or rubber scraper
to lift off dirty suds. Repeat if necessary, then wipe area with a clean cloth
dipped in clear water and wrung nearly dry. Dry completely.

Tips-Keep upholstery as dry as possible while shampooing to prevent damage. For
quick drying, open windows or turn on an electric fan, a dehumidifier, or
an air conditioner in the same room.

Household Odors

To freshen room air, dampen cotton balls with oil of wintergreen and place out
of sight but where air will touch them.
Candles, Telephones

Sponge with a piece of cotton dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Carpet Freshener

Combine 3/4 cup baking soda, 2 tbsp corn starch, and 1/4 cup perfumed talcum
powder. Sprinkle on dry carpet, let stand 5 to 15 minutes, then vacuum.

Cobwebs

For hard to reach spots, slip a sock over the end of a yardstick and secure
with a rubber band, then sweep the area. This method works well for cleaning
under radiators and refrigerators also.

Pet Urine

Dab area with toweling, wash with suds of liquid dish detergent, and rinse with
1/2 cup vinegar diluted in 1 qt warm water. Lay towels or paper towels over
the spot and weight down to absorb excess moisture. Let stand 4 to 6 hours,
then remove toweling, brush up nap and allow to dry completely. To speed drying,
use an electric fan.

Ovens
Fill a small glass bowl with 1/2 cup full-strength ammonia, place in oven and
close. Let stand overnight, then wipe loosened dirt with paper towels or
newspapers.
If necessary, rub surfaces with a suitable abrasive, such as fine steel wool,
then wash with warm soapy water and rinse. Repeat process if necessary.
Homemade Window Glass Cleaner
1/2 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water (or 2 tablespoons per quart) OR
1/2 cup sudsy ammonia to 1 gallon water (or 2 tablespoons per quart)
OR
1/2 cup sudsy ammonia 2 cups rubbing alcohol 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing
detergent 1 gallon water (This one is less likely to freeze in cold weather.)

Pots and Pans - Burned, and Crusted,on Foods

Soak or boil a solution of 2 tbsp baking soda per qt of water in each pan. Let
stand until particles are loosened, then wash as usual. Use a mild or moderate
abrasive if necessary.
Discolored Aluminum
Heat a solution of 1 tbsp vinegar per qt of water or 2 tsp cream of tartar per
qt of water in each pan until discoloration disappears.
Grease
Rub greasy spots with a mild or

a lot, but have gas stove and that from what a read it a bit worse then an
electric stove.

You could try Clorox wipes it was suggested on the list, I have not done
that yet. In fact I have not tackled that project yet, but the longer I wait
the worse it will be on me so have to get it soon. Trying to get armed with
info first cause I'm sure it will take some elbow grease.

[BlindHandyMan] it must have been Carla

2006-11-07 Thread cliffwilson
Dear List Members:
I had a good flight home from Houston yesterday, and the power stayed on at
Houston international Airport during my departure. Saturday night at our
convention headquarters, we were greeted with a different sight. Just as the
celebration was getting under way, all of the normal lights went out, and not
only was our hotel knocked out, so was the airport. Carla and Mary were all
smiles when they gave account of themselves and at least some of us suspected
they played a role in the evening theme of "lights out".
I thoroughly enjoyed the rendezvous, even the thrill of being on the tenth
floor when the fire alarm goes off. I do know now that the fire alarm will
wake the dead, not to mention, increasing the heart rate of all who are awake.
I finally called the desk to see where the safest escape rout was located, and
they told me that some "kid" had set off the alarm. I did not know that any of
our delegates looked that young?
It was a real pleasure to meet the two Dons, the one Phil and the singular
Tom. The entertainment was fantastic and the place was loaded with musical
talent. This hillbilly had a fantastic time and I hope to repeat this at some
time in the future. From the initial meeting upon arrival of Don and Mary Shaw
to Don's bringing me my cane as the shuttle was leaving for the airport, I
enjoyed the event. I even figured out how to dance on carpet with sticker
shoes.
Thanks to all who arranged for this event. Now, I must get to work here at
the salt mine.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson
