[BlindHandyMan] wood finish

2007-05-05 Thread Lenny McHugh
This hobby is getting more and more expensive. Yesterday I purchased red cherry
and red oak to make two more TV stands. These stands are not that big and the
wood was a little over $300.
Anyway while there I found out that they carry some exotic woods. They have
some purple heart. My daughter had wanted me to make a plant stand out of that
wood. I was told that in time the uv rays would turn it to a brown color.
Is there something that will totally filter out the uv rays? I don't want to
spend the time or money if the wood will lose the beautiful color.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Re: Question about soaking the air cleaner oil foam in my new lawn mower

2007-05-05 Thread Roger Bachelder
Hello Vicki,

Here is my two cents. First, Just don't assume that just because the
manufacturer gave you a quart of oil, means to use the whole quart.
Depending on the size of the engine makes the determine of how much oil you
need to use. If you can't find the recommended amount to use, just use the
dip stick indicator, and fill up to the full line. When you drain the oil,
you should drain it into a container that has a cover that won't leak. i use
a one gallon milk container. you can bring the oil to most gas stations to
get rid of it. some gas stations charge to get rid of used oil, and some
don't. It is not necessary to get new fuel, as long as there is no water in
the gas container in which you have the gas saved in. But seeings you have a
new mower, I myself would use new gas. to get rid of it, bring it to the gas
station, and they should dispose of it for you. Another thing, if you want
to maintained your mower, so it will last for many years, make sure you
change your fuel filter once a year too, and don't use to much oil on the
air filter if that is the way you are going to go. I don't recommend it!
They are cheep enough, i would just purchase a new filter when doing a
yearly oil change. Last thing, make sure you keep the underneath greased up
well, with a sharpened blade. I usually clean underneath the deck once a
year when putting it away for the winter.

Larry,

No the book just says to use engine oil. The mower did come with a
quart of oil from the manufacture. So should I use the whole quart
the first time? Oh, and when I do drain it what should I drain it
into? Along that line, I have old gas from last year in my gas can.
Should I use it?, and if not what is a safe way to dispose of it?
Thanks guys. Just wanta take good care of my new baby. :) I'm a
Tomboy what can I say.

[BlindHandyMan] Re: Question about soaking the air cleaner oil foam in my new lawn mower

2007-05-05 Thread compgirl32
Roger,

Thanks for the excellent info. When you say keep the underneath
greased up, what do you mean? I just located the oil capacity. It
says 20 oz. or 0.6 litters. I stated incorrectly the size of the
bottle, it is a pt. not a quart. Sorry about that. The bottle has
numbers on the side with the little window line. One side goes from
100 to 600 and the other side goes from 1 to 20. I haven't a clue
what this means. I have a funnel to use. The mower has a dip stick.
I has some visible moisture at the end. Now, where is says fill
line, it is above what looks like a criss cross pattern. Do I fill
to the top of the crisscross pattern or the bottom of it. My dip
stick is grayish black so it is going to be tricky. My book says I
can drain it from the side by tipping it over or from the bottom by
removing a drain plug with a ratchet. Which is easier and less messy?
Again, thank you so much for helping me with this. I really
appreciate it.

Vicki

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Re: Question about soaking the air cleaner oil foam in my new lawn mower

2007-05-05 Thread Michael Baldwin
Vicki,
It is easier for me to use the drain plug on the bottom. it is less messy
for me. I use an ice cream bucket cut down to fit under the mower. This is
what I do. tilt the mower back on it's handle, loosen the drain plug, put
the cut down bucket in the right place, and set the mower back on all four
wheels and let the oil drain.

the side of the bottle with 1-20 on it is the oz side. The bottle must be a
little bigger then a quart. It sounds like your mower should take the
entire bottle.
Michael

2007-05-05 Thread compgirl32
Michael,

Great!! Now are you talking the ice cream buckets like from aldi's
that have handles on them? Once you have drained the oil how do you
seal it so it does spill? This is great stuff!!

 This is
what I do. tilt the mower back on it's handle, loosen the drain
plug, put
the cut down bucket in the right place, and set the mower back on
all four

the side of the bottle with 1-20 on it is the oz side. The bottle

 Roger,

Thanks for the excellent info. When you say keep the underneath
greased up, what do you mean? I just located the oil capacity. It
says 20 oz. or 0.6 litters. I stated incorrectly the size of the
bottle, it is a pt. not a quart. Sorry about that. The bottle has
numbers on the side with the little window line. One side goes from
 100 to 600 and the other side goes from 1 to 20. I haven't a clue
what this means. I have a funnel to use. The mower has a dip stick.
I has some visible moisture at the end. Now, where is says fill
line, it is above what looks like a criss cross pattern. Do I fill
to the top of the crisscross pattern or the bottom of it. My dip
stick is grayish black so it is going to be tricky. My book says I
can drain it from the side by tipping it over or from the bottom by
removing a drain plug with a ratchet. Which is easier and less messy?
Again, thank you so much for helping me with this. I really
 appreciate it.

[BlindHandyMan] Anybody have experience with container homes?

2007-05-05 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi folks,

Caught this brief news story on cable the other night about homes being built
in FL out of shipping containers. My wife has mentioned this to me before, but
I hadn't really taken it seriously until I started looking into it and found
that NE Florida apparently has a repository of new, unused containers,
insulated, ready to be trucked around the state. Does anybody know somebody
with one of these homes; have you ever been in one; or has anybody worked on
one? I have to say, the notion of using containers is still a bit weird, but
the selling point would be that since they are structurally sound
free-standing, you can customize it any way you want. You can put walls, doors,
hallways, etc. anywhere without having to worry about where you need a support
bearing wall, how you'll run your electric, etc. I'm just beginning to check
into this because it would make a larger home than we can spring for now,
affordable. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Joe

[BlindHandyMan] saw blade

2007-05-05 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi All,
On the most recent cd of the woodworking magazines there was article about a
new saw blade. The Fruid (hope that is the spelling) glue line blade. I would
like to give it a try. I just called Lowes and Home Depot and neither sell it.
Sears does not have anything like it.
Any ideas where I can purchase?
Since I just purchased a large pile of cherry and will have to make many glue
joints I think it would help.

Joe,
Never heard of such a thing. I wouldn't think it would be a very big house

to haul were 48 foot long, 102 inches wide and 110 inches tall.
These were for boxed beef going over seas.

 Roger,

Thanks for the excellent info. When you say keep the underneath
greased up, what do you mean? I just located the oil capacity. It
says 20 oz. or 0.6 litters. I stated incorrectly the size of the
bottle, it is a pt. not a quart. Sorry about that. The bottle has
numbers on the side with the little window line. One side goes from
 100 to 600 and the other side goes from 1 to 20. I haven't a clue
what this means. I have a funnel to use. The mower has a dip stick.
I has some visible moisture at the end. Now, where is says fill
line, it is above what looks like a criss cross pattern. Do I fill
to the top of the crisscross pattern or the bottom of it. My dip
stick is grayish black so it is going to be tricky. My book says I
can drain it from the side by tipping it over or from the bottom by
removing a drain plug with a ratchet. Which is easier and less messy?
Again, thank you so much for helping me with this. I really
 appreciate it.

[BlindHandyMan] Once Again, Asking About Door Installation

2007-05-05 Thread Bill Gallik
Well gang, now that it appears that I'm getting email from the list I
thought I'd throw this question out again. I have to install a new service
door in my garage, I purchased a pre-hung steel door from Menard's that
measures 80 high by 36 wide. Does anybody have any suggestions or tips on
removing an existing door and installing a new, pre-hung door?

I'd appreciate any tips and please remember that I cannot see at all.

  Hi All,
On the most recent cd of the woodworking magazines there was article about a
new saw blade.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Re: Question about soaking the air cleaner oil foam in my new lawn mower

2007-05-05 Thread Steve S.
On the bottle, the numbers 100 to 600 is c c, and the numbers 1 to 20 is oz.
I think the best way to drain the oil, is from underneath.
you need to keep the under neath side of the mower, clean. once in a while,
which is a year, you need to oil around where the blade is on.

2007-05-05 Thread Robert J. Moore
To add to what Larry said about not over filling the engine with oil. I lent
a lawn mower to a friend and I told him to make sure to add some oil because
I knew that it was low. I should have changed the oil and put in fresh oil
before I lent it out any way, So I will take the responsibility for that my
self. This mower is about 20 years old and never failed to start and always
ran perfect. Well he called me about 2 hours later and said that he added
some oil and ran it for about 5 minutes and it was throwing oil all over the
place. I am sure that he over filled it. I am not upset as well I could be.
I say all this to re enforce the fackt that too much oil will blow out your
seals. Not a pretty sight.
Now I have a question myself.
If I can find the parts and it is not too expensive I will restore this
motor. Question I have is this. This same guy sent me home with a mower last
year that is even older than the one I lent to him I would gues upwards of
30 years and it is a wards. I am usually not big on using stop leak
products but on that old wards mower do you think there is much hope that
it will stop the oil leak It looks to me that it is the main crank baring
on the out put side. There is no oil on the deck only under nieth. If so
then what product am I looking for and how do I use it?

Vicky,

You probably don't want to use last year's fuel in your new
mower. Secondly, check the engine oil level. I've seen them
ship both ways either with or without any oil in the crank
case. Typically this is done in one of two ways there will
be either a sight glass with a maximum and minimum level
line on it. The most common method is a small dip-stick
secured to the base of the oil filler plug. Please whatever
you do!!! don't over fill the crank case as this can result
in blown engine seals.

Larry Stansifer

Larry,

No the book just says to use engine oil. The mower did come
with a quart of oil from the manufacture. So should I use
the whole quart the first time? Oh, and when I do drain it
what should I drain it into? Along that line, I have old
gas from last year in my gas can.
Should I use it?, and if not what is a safe way to dispose
of it?
Thanks guys. Just wanta take good care of my new baby. :)
I'm a Tomboy what can I say.
