Re: [BlindHandyMan] Building A House Out of Nothing At All

2007-05-10 Thread Jewel Blanch
I think that it was the BBC that mounted a series in which teams of highly
skilled engineers and physical scientists, using nothing but the materials that
would have been available at the time, had to figure out and then demonstrate
the methods that were probably used to build the wonders of the ancient world
and one or two that aren't listed as such, but as still engineering marvels.
The engineers/scientists were handicapped in that they only had 3 weeks or a
month to complete the project and also they did not have access to an unlimited
labour force as did the engineers/scientists of that world. However, these
handicaps should have been balanced to a degree by the vast knowledge that Man
has accumulated in the last 5000 years. As it transpired, the reservoir of
accumulated knowledge did not turn out to be the great advantage that was
anticipated.
The building of Stone Henge was included although it has been studied for many
years, so did not present too much of a problem, but others, such as how the
enormous figures of the Egyptian Gods were sculpted did pose major headaches.
The team that had the raising of the Sphinx as its project had the replica
almost in its upright position, but they were beaten by the time limit.
One engineering feat that completely defeated these engineers with all their
skills was how the removable awning/canopy that covered the vast array of
seating in the Roman Colosseum was constructed, and how it was able to
withstand near hurricane winds.
We know that there was such an awning because it was described by Plinny, but,
unfortunately, he did not give details as to how this engineering miracle had
been achieved.

  Jewel

Gene, I like your comments on hand tools. One hand tool I used to have

to go the other way you flip a little do dad and instant reverse. . I

[BlindHandyMan] Building A House Out of Nothing At All

2007-05-10 Thread Victor Gouveia
I think what most people are forgetting is that early American Indians, and
indeed, most aboriginals from all over the world just used a hatchet and a
knife of some kind to build their shelters back in the day.

Granted, they must have found ways of making their work easier.

For example, A friend of mine never needed any matches to light a fire, all he
needed was some wood and a little makeshift bow he carried in his pocket.

He would twist the string of the bow around a straight stick, turn the bow on
it's side, and point the straight stick down into a bigger piece of wood, after
carving a notch in it.

He would then find two more smaller pieces of wood, grasp them in a pincer
motion at the top of the straight stick, then proceed to use a sawing motion
with the bow, from side to side, which would then turn the straight stick at a
fast speed, causing the friction to build up heat on the larger piece of wood.
He would then keep a small supply of dried leaves and wood bits close by to
throw on the heated wood after it started smoking.

Suffice it to say, you can rub two sticks together and get a fire, but not only
that, but with wigwams, tepees, and huts made of nothing but bamboo and palm
leaves withstanding hurricane force winds, obviously these people are doing
something right, and not a single electrical outlet or portable generator or
compressor in sight.

How do you figure?

Victor Gouveia

[BlindHandyMan] Shows this week.

2007-05-10 Thread Don

Well, it finely happened, we had a full house, yes a quorum for a change. I
must say it felt good to have all the original show members together.
Our guest is Gail Crow from somewhere in North Dakota as I remember. Gail
had been on before but a long time ago. Gail has the distinction of being the
only totally blind person I ever encountered who cut fire wood with a chain
saw. By the way, He still has all his limes and fingers.
Guest on the blind like me show is a fellow named Ken Osborn. Ken makes his
living doing voice over for anything that comes along. One of the reasons He is
able to do this is, He is very good.
Come give a listen to the shows and pleas let us no what you think.
Now, here ar the listening lengths for the shows this week.

[BlindHandyMan] hand tools, was Scroll saws, band saws, cutting shapes

2007-05-10 Thread GenePoole
Problem is, too many modern folks like their table saws and power tools. Bit
give em n axe and a hatchet and usually you're average backyard woodworker is
lost. If you're building a cabin in the wilds of Alaska, you're not gonna have
access to electricity too often unless you run a generator all the time. Which
up there costs a lot of money. I do not have the knack for woodworking, but I
have seen some amazing stuff made by hand tools, and far too often the power
tool jockeys belittle and deride the traditionalists. The great antique bureaus
of yesteryear were not built with power tools from home depot, remember. And
while it did take years, to make one of them, they're still around 2 and 300
years later. Let them speak for themselves.

Yes and no You can get real close to the blade with your fingers at least with
the scroll saw I have. You will have to do what I did just get a lot of scrap
wood and just practice following the lines going up to the blade and learning
when to turn and do things like that...

The router and a template is the only thing I found works for me for cutting
shapes.
The band saw with a good fence set up and some careful aligning, works quite
well for resawing wood. I found that anything beyond a 1x6 is very difficult
to keep straight!

Is a scrollsaw of any use to a blind person?
Can a blind person resaw wood with a bandsaw? I'm tired of wasting wood!
How do blind people cut out shapes. I could use a router and a template I

I've used a lathe duplicator to copy a template, can a blind person make
freehand turnings?
How about sharpening all sorts of tools?

Hi, Well I recently got one of the raised drawing boards and I have bin

using the raised drawing board and then I tape that on a piece of plywood and

[BlindHandyMan] How To Hang Cutters and Down Spouts

2007-05-10 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi All
* Installing Gutters and Downspouts

COMPONENT PARTS OF GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

* Gutters and downspouts are constructed of many separate parts and pieces.
Metal guttering
pieces are usually fastened together with sheet metal screws or pop rivets.

* The basic gutter pieces are commonly offered in standard 10' lengths and are
usually made of aluminum, plastic or galvanized metal. These are the basic
gutter materials used for most gutter and downspout installations.

* Spikes and ferrules hold the gutter to the wall of the house. The ferrule is
inserted inside the gutter and the spike is driven through the rim of the
gutter and through the ferrule to hold the gutter in place.

* The slip connector is used to connect two pieces of guttering in the run. The
connecting joint is sealed with mastic or caulk to prevent leakage. Some
brands of downspouts and gutters slip snugly together and need no mastic or
caulk.

* The strap hanger is attached under the shingles or other roofing material and
then to the outside edge of the gutter, providing support for the run.

* The end piece is available with an outlet for the downspout or for simply
ending a gutter run.

* The end cap ends the run of guttering and is available for left- or
right-hand use. Some styles must be sealed with either caulk or mastic.

* The downspout takes the water out of the gutter and down to the drainage pipe
or splash block on the ground. It is attached to the gutter at the outlet
in the end piece.

* The conductor pipe band, or clincher, is a strap used to hold the downspout
in place. It is nailed or screwed to the outside wall to hold the downspout
securely wherever necessary. This piece is available in various styles and
types.

* Ball strainers can be inserted in the end piece to prevent leaves and other
bulky material from clogging the downspout or drainage pipes. Several other
types of gutter covers are available as well. While not absolutely necessary,
strainers and gutter covers can be helpful.

* In some cases, strap hangers are the wraparound type. The style of strap
hanger you use is more a matter of choice or manufacturer's design than of
function.
The strap hangers shown both serve the same purpose-to hold the gutter in place.

* An inside miter is used when it becomes necessary to make an inside turn in a
gutter.

* You can make outside turns in the guttering system by inserting an outside
miter Use mastic or caulk for sealing the joint where either
inside or outside miters are jointed to the gutter.

* Some downspouts and elbows are round instead of square.

* It sometimes becomes necessary to make turns in downspouts. When a turn is
required to pull the downspout toward or away from the house, use square elbows.
Two of these elbows used together, make an offset of several inches in the
downspout. The crimp in downspouts and elbows usually makes
mastic or caulk unnecessary at the joints.

* To make a turn in the downspout either to the left or right, use the square
elbows shown in B. Two of these elbows mounted together divert the direction
of the downspout to the left or right by several inches.

* A square shoe is used at the bottom of the downspout. This turns the flow of
water onto a splash block where the downspout ends.

Gutters and downspouts are constructed of many separate parts and pieces.

INSTALLING GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

* The most commonly used gutters and downspouts are made of galvanized metal,
aluminum or plastic. Various component parts described in step 1 are required
to complete the job.

* Strips of guttering usually come in 10' lengths. First, measure the area
where the guttering is to be installed and determine exactly how many feet of
guttering and how many of the basic component parts you need.

[BlindHandyMan] A Guide to Applying Roof Shingles

2007-05-10 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi Everyone
Applying Roofing Shingles
Laying Shingles in Roof Valleys

Whether you're replacing a few damaged shingles or starting a complete
re-roofing job, the following step-by-step instructions can make your project
easier.
Take a few minutes to read the instructions carefully before starting and you
can save time, money and effort while completing a better job.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

* Working on any roof can be dangerous. You should take every safety precaution
possible and always use extreme care while working on the roof.

* Use common sense while working on the roof. Let someone know you are up there
- or better yet, work with a helper.

* Use a ladder that is high enough and strong enough for the job you are doing.
Secure the ladder at the top and bottom before climbing it.

* Use extreme caution when working near power lines, conduits or TV antennas.
Never touch them or allow a metal ladder to come in contact with them.

* Never start a roofing job in cold or wet weather. Also, allow early morning
dew to disappear before beginning your work.

* Wear heavy, rubber-soled shoes with a non-skid tread to prevent slips and
avoid wearing loose clothing.

* If the roof slopes more than a 6" rise for every 12" horizontally, use roof
brackets and boards to provide extra footing support. Place all tools and
shingles within easy reach and where they will not slide off the roof.

* Keep the roof surface clean and free from loose nails and shingles. These can
cause you to slip and fall.

* Keep people away from below the area where you will be working.

DETERMINE THE MATERIALS NEEDED

* Roofing shingles are sold in "squares." Most asphalt shingles are baled
together with three or four bundles per square.

* First, measure the length and width of each area of the roof. For each area
of the roof, multiply the length times the width. Then add the results for
the total square feet of shingles needed. Measure all dormers and extensions.

* Divide the total square footage by 100 and purchase that many squares of
shingles.

* Purchase an additional 10 percent of the number of shingles for cutting,
waste and starter courses and to save one bundle for future repairs.

* You'll also need about 2-1/2 lbs. of roofing nails for each square of
shingles. Use hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails, either 11- or 12-gauge with a
3/8" diameter head, or follow the shingle manufacturer's recommendation for the
type of nails to be used.

* Use 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" nails for new roofs, or 1-3/4" nails for re-roofing or
repairs.

* If you are starting a new roofing job, or a complete re-roofing project,
you'll also need enough 15-lb. roofing felt to cover the entire roof area
underneath
the shingles.

* You'll need roofing cement for edges, flashings and ridges.
list end

SELECT THE SHINGLES

* There are many types, styles and sizes of asphalt shingles.

* Your selection process should begin with the type and grade of asphalt
shingle needed for the type of building. Some factors to consider are the
purpose
of the building, the slope of the roof, local weather conditions and the
design, style and size of the structure.

* The exposure for each type of shingle is usually specified by the
manufacturer. However, for most common shingles, a 5" exposure is standard.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

* You can successfully lay asphalt shingles over any existing roof. However, if
there are more than three layers of old roofing on the structure, they must
be removed completely before applying new shingles.

* Make any necessary repairs to the roof structure before beginning the
re-roofing project.

* Drive down or remove any loose or protruding nails.

* For re-roofing jobs, re-nail any loose shingles and replace any missing
shingles with new ones. (See the upcoming repair section).

* If you're applying new shingles over old wooden shingles, nail them securely
and use feathering strips for a smooth appearance.

HOW TO REPLACE DAMAGED SHINGLES

* Making repairs to an existing asphalt shingle roof is easy when you follow
these step-by-step instructions.

* Use a small pry bar to pull out the nails holding the damaged shingle. Remove
both the nails and the shingle.

* If you cannot reach the nails, use a sharp linoleum knife to cut away the
damaged shingle.

* Always try to replace the damaged shingle with one similar in weight, size
and color.

* Apply asphalt roofing cement to the back of the replacement shingle before
putting it into place.

* After positioning the new shingle, nail it down with 1-3/4" roofing nails.

* Position the roofing nails so they are covered by the shingle above. For
extra protection against leaks, apply a small amount of roofing cement to the
nail heads.

LAYING SHINGLES IN ROOF VALLEYS

* A roof valley is formed where two roofs join at an angle. You must be careful
when shingling in this area - an improperly laid roof valley can easily
develop leaks.

* Valleys should be covered with a minera

shapes

I have a delta unisaw, a jointer, plainer, drill press,
router and router table. I'm wondering if some other tools
will be worth buying. Here are a few random questions I
have.
Is a scrollsaw of any use to a blind person?
Can a blind person resaw wood with a bandsaw? I'm tired of
wasting wood!
How do blind people cut out shapes. I could use a router
and a template I suppose, but how do I cut a template?
I've used a lathe duplicator to copy a template, can a
blind person make freehand turnings?
How about sharpening all sorts of tools?
  David

2007-05-10 Thread Tom Fowle
You can build a house with mud and straw and thatch and probably using
only your hands, but you wouldn't want to live there in the rain.

You can get your food by hunting and gathering if you live some places
but I'd not take any bets on most modern people surviving that way
including my self of course, so the
discussion has no point.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] louvered doors

2007-05-10 Thread David Sexton
I would cut 45 degree or greater slots into two square posts and fit the slats
into these and then glue some sort of thin trim over the posts to hide the
slots. I wouldn't glue the slats into place, but the top and bottom rails to
the posts or styles to allow for expantion of the slats.
Or, you could just use pegboard for the back.

Has anyone made louvered doors? I am in the planning stages for a new future
project. I want to make a small shoe cabinet. I am concerned a little about
ventilation.
I have a few choices. The simplest is to let most of the back open and use
panel doors on the front or louvered or slotted doors.
I will be making a paper record holder for my Dr. I have been trying to find
a project that I could use sassafras wood and think I now found two.

David,
You've pretty much said it, click is faster but not as accurate,
roto is a bit slower but can give you 1/64Th accuracy.
The rotomatic base ruler is only 6 inches long whereas the click
is 12 inches case and measuring bar combined.

I have and use both and so should you all if you can afford em.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Working with Concrete

2007-05-10 Thread Lee A. Stone

Doing just ducky here in New York Ray, now that swimming pool season
is almost here. Well , you could get real fancy and order a metal
plackard to install close to that new concrete patio . maybe it should
read" Patio installed by the Ray Foundation 5-07-ADWhat I might add
maybe same is being done in other places is many New York State
roadways/ such as the New York State Thruway are now all being covered
with blacktop and of course those older concrete roads make a real good
base. Lee

I've seen the rotomatic, but never used one. Can anyone offer a comparison of
the rotomatic and the clickruler? Clickrules seem must faster, but can only
give you 1/16" accuracy.

This may be overobvious, but a high quality square, with tactile (the good
ones for sighties have fingernail notches) is a necessity, 4ft for roofing
or just a 1 ft. You can always use your adapted ruler to make the
measurement, but (embarrassed) when I started using a square, things
  started coming out nicer.

2007-05-10 Thread Trouble
With those stairs, the ramp sounds good. Once you get it on the top
of the ramp. You can let it go down fast and smooth. The quicker it
hits bottom. The less weight the stairs have to take, and the ramp
would disperse the weight also.

joist spacing could be a problem, requiring jacks and so on. but depending
on the site you were replacing the floor, maybe too far outside the box.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Lubrication Question

2007-05-10 Thread Edward Przybylek
I don't have an air compressor anymore but I do have some canned air that I
use to clean the inside of my computer and circuit boards. It's worth a
try. And you're right, any excuse to use a tool ...

Ed
Do you have an air compressor. If so do you have an air nossel that you can
use to blow out any small dust and debree that might be built up in the
Baring?
Might be worth a try.
Any excuse to use a tool such as an air compressor is a good excuse.

Hi,

I've never heard of using talcum powder as a lubricant but I'm willing to
try anything at this point. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Lubrication Question

Hi all,

The beater bar on my vacuum cleaner has developed a really annoying squeak.
The noise is coming from a small wheel at the front of the beater bar. I'd
like to lubricate it but I'm not sure what to use. My guess is that most
lubricants would cause dust and dirt to build up on the wheel. Does anyone
know of something that would get rid of the squeak and not cause such a
build-up? A dry lubricant, perhaps? Thanks.

Take care,
Ed

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Adaptive woodworking tools

2007-05-10 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hello David,
I never used a click ruler.I have a talking measuring tape that I use a lot.
I have the original roto matic measuring device. I believe that NFB sells
that item. I have some metal blocks that were made for me by a machinist
friend. Since then I purchased the brass setup bars from mlcs. For setting
up my router table I highly recommend them.
My talking measuring tape was purchased England it can now be purchased in
the Us.
I also use an audible level made by the same manufacturer as the talking
tape.

I've done quite a bit of woodworking using only my clickruler.
My question today is what other adaptive tools have been useful to you such
as talking measuring tapes, audible levels, metal blocks of certain
thicknesses, etc. What is useful, where did you get the tool, etc.
Thanks.
David

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Working with Concrete

2007-05-10 Thread Brice Mijares
There is an old saying when working with concrete. You don't work the
concrete, the concrete works you! Another words, once you start pouring the
concrete time is essential, No stopping for a break for a beer, cigarette
ETC. As the concrete sets up pretty fast.
