[BlindHandyMan] test drive Freud biscuit joiner

2007-05-20 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi All,
Although I am still considering the dowel max jig I will be test driving the
Freud js100a biscuit joiner.
I have been reading reviews on these machines and found many negative reviews
on all makes and models.
I found this machine at Lowe's for $100 and Lowe's gives a 5 year warranty and
a 90 day satisfaction guarantee on this model.
I figure in the next few weeks I can decide if this is the way that I want to
go.
On one other brand review it was highly recommended that you wear eye
protection, that is so when you throw the machine against the wall that it
won't bounce back and hit you in the face.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] washers

2007-05-20 Thread Tom Fowle
1960s for many years, it had wash and dry on a single timer
cycle. It used cold water to cool the excess heat from the dry
cycle and thus did not need an air vent. The dry was very hot,
but if the cloths could stand the temperature it did a good job
and no need to move cloths from one machine to the other. It was
a front loader and had no agitator, seemed very easy on cloths but
was pretty noisy. the dryer kept blowing thermostats so i just
used it as a washer for years till it blew a pump and the main
tub bearings were going out.

[BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Brice Mijares
Last week my washer went down due to the dogs in the agitator. I fixed that
problem, and now my dryer isn't heating. Yesterday I pulled it out, and
disconnected the hose leading to the exhaust vent. Then I turned it on and
plenty of air was blowing out. So I eliminated any kind of obstruction.
Now, I'm perplexed. I don't know if it's the heating element, a thermostat,
or something else. So gang, give me some ideas. I hate to go buy a new
heating element and find out that wasn't the problem, even though I'm
leaning towards the heating element since it's around 17 years old. By the
way, it's a Kenmore.

I remember the one front loader our Laundromat had. That

that kind of thing. I think that was the main purpose for them

What I have in my yard, is a pipe in the cement, it is a sleeve. A 2
inchX6ft pipe, chain link fence post sinks into that.
It has a special collar on it that has N,S,E,W hooks for line. One of
those is looped back to the house where there is a hook in the birck work
and one goes across to a similar collar on an actual fence pipe.
I'd say $500 is parts and high labor combined.

I love to put my things out on a line. Though it is not any cheaper to
have a clothes line than a dryer with the prices they want for them. I
have lived places where there was a close line though and I took full
   advantage of it.

How hard are they to install yourself. I jus priced the t poles and I

While this was somewhat interesting I would be interested in a more detailed
description of some of the various characteristic features and qualities of
 traditional furniture styles.

As a big fan of The New Yankee Workshop and other programmes and sources of
information it has long frustrated me not to have a much better understanding
of the various typical characteristics of the projects and pieces described.
Norm is a particular fan of Shaker style for which I think I have a basic
understanding but a more detailed understanding would be helpful.

I wonder if Larry might be aware of a book or reference with verbal
descriptions of Queen Ann and such. Doubtless there are dozens of fine
picture books not of much value of course.

  Anyone else similarly interested?

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Antique Furniture Defined.

  Hi All
  Antique Furniture Defined
Shopping for antique furniture can be exciting and fun. But with all the
differing terminology out there, it can be confusing too. For instance, do
  you
know the difference between a buffet and a sideboard? How about a chifforobe
and a chiffonier? Read on to find out.

  Buffet vs. Sideboard

These two terms are used interchangeably quite often, and for good reason.
They're essentially the same thing. The French actually define a buffet as a
small sideboard used for storing dishes. So perhaps a buffet might be a
little smaller than a sideboard, but it serves basically the same purpose.

In both pieces dishes and serving utensils are stored below with a flat
surface above to display and serve prepared food. Some buffets and
  sideboards feature
large mirrored backs with display shelves attached while others have no back
  at all.

The features incorporated depend on the period and styling of the piece.

Is it a Highboy, a Chiffonier or a Simple Chest of Drawers?

In the bedroom, some wonder whether they own a highboy, a chiffonier or a
simply a chest of drawers. Well, since a highboy amounts to being a tall
  chest
with a legged base and a chiffonier is a high narrow chest, they're both
technically chests of drawers. The chiffonier sometimes has a swivel mirror
  attached
  to the top as well.

With little closet and storage space built in to most period homes, the more
drawers a chest held the better for the owner. To meet the storage demands
of modern consumers, furniture makers often emulate the styling of Colonial
highboys and American oak chiffoniers when reproducing traditional styles
  sold
  in furniture stores today.

The Difference in Armoires and Wardrobes

Another piece of furniture back in favor these days is the armoire.
Originally produced in medieval times to store armor (hence the name), these
  lofty pieces
find a place in every room of the house. Whether new or old, the armoire's
traditional role of adding storage space for clothing has expanded to
  holding
  everything from electronics to linens.

As with large chests of drawers, the armoire added storage capacity in the
form of a free-standing closet where clothes could be hung. Today, the
  armoire
is prized for decorative features as much as functionality.

Of course, you may be wondering about the difference between an armoire and
a wardrobe at this point. Really, as it turns out, there isn't all that much
difference. They both have doors and contain a rod for hanging clothing. An
armoire tends to be a little larger and perhaps a bit more ornate, while a
wardrobe possesses a more streamlined look. This difference in terminology
seems to reflect the seller's preference more than anything, since Webster's
actually defines an armoire as a type of wardrobe.

  Some English wardrobes designed for

Re: [BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Dale Leavens
Do you have a continuity tester?

You should be able to read an electric current through the heating coil if
it is in tact. You should be able to read current through the thermostat too
when cool since it is a protective shut-off device.

I had an old drier many years ago which heated too ,much and it was the
wiring to the heating system which burned off on more than one occasion.
Because I used it in my office mostly to dry towels and pillow cases I liked
the heat, got the job done quicker so every year or 18 months or so I would
have to replace that foot or so of wire.

Most likely though it is the element. There are often two, one for low heat
and another for high heat, if your dryer has a warm setting try it and see
if it still heats. It would be possible but unusual I would think for both
to die at the same time.

Some may just have a tap off part way along the coil but somehow I doubt it.

If you don't have a meter or continuity tester, a simple bell or buzzer and
battery in series will do fine.

Hope this helps.

Last week my washer went down due to the dogs in the agitator. I fixed
 that
problem, and now my dryer isn't heating. Yesterday I pulled it out, and
disconnected the hose leading to the exhaust vent. Then I turned it on
 and
plenty of air was blowing out. So I eliminated any kind of obstruction.
 Now, I'm perplexed. I don't know if it's the heating element, a
 thermostat,
or something else. So gang, give me some ideas. I hate to go buy a new
heating element and find out that wasn't the problem, even though I'm
leaning towards the heating element since it's around 17 years old. By
 the
 way, it's a Kenmore.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Joe Hunter
could well be that your drying element has finally given up the ghoast. you
have done well to keep it so long. if there is air blowing out then it
points to a dead heater or as in the case the fernistaff has kicked and that
usually means the filter maybe blocked. sorry can not be of more help.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Ron or Susan Denis
Don't rule out humane society sabotage! I hear there were some disgruntled
pet lovers who took umbrage at hearing how you dropped 4 dogs into the
washer and have trapped them there and are forcing them to do all the work.
Some folk became quite agitated.

[BlindHandyMan] Measuring Water Chemistry

Anybody know of a way to independently assess water chemistry in a spa or pool?

Don't worry about what people think; they don't do it very often.

I believe you are on the right track. Check out both the thermostat and
heating element with a ohm meter or a continuity tester.

Good luck.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Rob Monitor
Well now is it going to blow up.. OK I think would have to say that the heating
element is most likely the problem. But I remember on one of my dryers that on
the back was a
thermal do-hickey thing that was like a piece of medal and all I did was bend
it in a little and the dryer worked again... The piece of medal was about as
big as my thumb but was a lotthinner Also it was about in the middle of
the back of the dryer it stuck out a little from the back..

Do you have a continuity tester?

You should be able to read an electric current through the heating coil if
it is in tact. You should be able to read current through the thermostat
 too
when cool since it is a protective shut-off device.

I had an old drier many years ago which heated too ,much and it was the
wiring to the heating system which burned off on more than one occasion.
Because I used it in my office mostly to dry towels and pillow cases I
 liked
the heat, got the job done quicker so every year or 18 months or so I
 would
have to replace that foot or so of wire.

Most likely though it is the element. There are often two, one for low
 heat
and another for high heat, if your dryer has a warm setting try it and see
if it still heats. It would be possible but unusual I would think for both
to die at the same time.

Some may just have a tap off part way along the coil but somehow I doubt
 it.

If you don't have a meter or continuity tester, a simple bell or buzzer
 and
battery in series will do fine.

By

Re: [BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Dale Leavens
Well, you could take a 9 volt battery and a little beeper or other
electronic sound device. One pole of the battery you connect to one end of
the element wire, the other pole to the beeper. The other wire from the
beeper connects to the other end of the element. Electricity should run
through the element coil, through the beeper and back to the beeper causing
it to: Well, you guessed it! it should beep if the heating coil is in tact.
The circuit is showing continuity. If the element is burned then the circuit
will not be continuous and the beeper won't beep.

Do be sure you have the dryer disconnected before poking about in there
though, the element is 220 V and probably 20 amps. We don't want Fried Bryce

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Deck Screws?

2007-05-20 Thread Dale Leavens
I like to buy long screws like that and even longer ones with the square
Robertson style socket. It isn't too hard to drive them straight but it takes a
pretty good driver if you don't drill first. I have a pretty good driver and
occasionally it will twist the screw right off. When they get that thick too,
they will usually split out the ends of a board
if you are within a couple of inches of the end.

Things like adding oil or wax can help but two drills, one with a driver and
the other with a drill bit is my preferred method.

getting them in straight isn't any more difficult than driving four inch nails
and it isn't so long ago that nails were the only practical option for securing
decking. I don't think anyone uses screws for fixing together framing
components like walls and joists yet though more are now using pneumatic
nailers. They are pretty expensive for most of us doing a one-off job though.

This morning while scrounging some thread all at my local
home center I came across some wood screws that appear to be
about 2.75 inches long with a 0.125 shank diameter. The
hardware guy told me that they were deck screws. The first
thing that went through my head is how the hell would a
blind guy successfully run one of these monsters in
straight? Do you pre-drill for these things? I know a couple
of youall are either doing or have done decks and I just had
  to ask.
With necessity being the mother of invention I don't think
it would be a big deal to come up with some kind of a
  piloting fixture,
but since we already have a wheel I don't want to reinvent
  one.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] The pig has landed.

2007-05-20 Thread Dan Rossi
Bill,

Yeah, to get the pig off the sled, I will remove the screws holding the
crossbars to the runners. Then, lift the end, and have someone pull the
crossbar out. Then do the other end. That is actually how we got it on
the sled.

And Betsy, The radiator works just fine. We decided to pull the radiator
out of the living room to give us more living room. We will use a
ventless gas fireplace insert to supplement heat in the living room.
Since we want to have heat in the basement it made some sense to move the
pig to the basement.

Even if we decided to ditch the pig, we were going to have to carry it
down the four flights of steps to the street. Granted, I probably could
have cut it into a couple of more manageable pieces if I was going to
trash it. Anyway, it will now give us heating the basement at some
undetermined point in the future when I get around to finishing the
basement.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] last week, the washer, this week the dryer

2007-05-20 Thread Tom Fowle
brice,
I had an old kenmoor that did just that, I found that wires had
become brittle and broken at several joints inside the back of
the machine. I suppose heat and vibration take their toll. I
just opened up the back after disconnecting the power of course,
and examined all the wiring and connections I could find,
particularly those going to the heating element if you trace them
out. I did this several times over a couple years when it
produced little or no heat.

when i found a brittle or broken joint I cut out all the brittle
wire and replaced it with similarly sized stranded wire using
wire nuts.

Just be sure you don't strip too much insulation for the wire
nuts you have, and add tape wherever to avoid shorts.

If you can find the leads to the heating element and temporarily
disconnect them, keeping track of where they go of course, and
you have an ohm meter or other continuity tester, the heating
element should show a pretty low resistance through it. I'd
guess no more than a few hundred ohms at max. If it appears
open, then it may be bad. It would be very unlikely to short
out.

Hope it helps.

Tom

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Measuring Water Chemistry

2007-05-20 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

A pool supply store where I used to purchase all my chemicals had a
computerized set-up for testing pool water. You would provide them with a
jar of water from your pool, they would pour the water into a variety of
containers and the computer would print-out an analysis of your water along
with recommendations for correcting any chemistry problems. I don't know if
anything was added to the water while it was being analyzed. Typically the
analysis gave me a great deal more information than I needede and if I had
followed all the corrective recommendations, I would have gone broke
purchasing a myriad of small containers of liquids and powders. It did a
good job but you had to use good sense when balancing your pool chemistry
based on the analysis. My guess is that such a system is quite expensive
and would not make sense for a residential pool but they do exist if you
have some spare pocket change.

Take care,
Ed

Hi,

I think you will find that the colour gradations are too small to be
detected by those colour identifiers.

It is a long time since I had a pool but the little chamber into which the
chemistry is dropped had a series of coloured strips all gradations of
yellow. You compared the water colour with the strip closest to that colour
and read the number value associated with it.

While it would be possible to produce a machine capable of that sort of
comparison and very accurately as well, it would take a little money.

It should be fairly easy to read PH electronically though, a pair of
electrodes submerged in the water or in a known acid solution diluted with a
precise amount of pool water would generate an electrical current (it forms
a Leclanché battery cell). Don't know of an electronic method of measuring
free chlorine though, there might well be one.

I thought about that, Rob, but my Cobolt one's aperture is too large. If the
Brightec one is smaller, it might e possible.

I'll try to get my hands on one of those and if it works, it would certainly
be nice.

Hi, This just a question since I never owned a spa or a pool. These test
strips that you use to test the water do they turn different colors and if
so could you use a color identifier to do the testing???- Original

If there is a really good way to do this as a blind person, I would sure
like too know the answer. The short answer, get a sited person too look at
the test strips. regards Don

Anybody know of a way to independently assess water chemistry in a spa or
pool?

Don't worry about what people think; they don't do it very often.
