RE: [BlindHandyMan] Dodge Intrepid

2008-01-08 Thread Michael Baldwin
Could. failing oil pump, plugged oil pump pickup screen, worn bearings,
etc... basically anything that would cause the oil pressure to not be as
high as it should be. The sensor could be bad, but if it were my car, i
would hook it up to a oil pressure gauge that gave the exact reading for the
pressure, and go from there. last I knew the light came on when the oil
pressure was at or below 8 PSI.

I worked for Dodge but I don't remember if that is a spade or ring
connector. You may have to work at it when it is a bit warm to break it
loose.

Unfortunately a sending unit may not be the fix though. That is the easiest
to change out though. Beyond that there are a few items that cost a little
bit to replace if the engine hasn't warn out as a result. Keep working at
the sending unit for a little while but listen for any new noises in the
engine.

2008-01-08 Thread Tom Fowle
From what I understand from my broadcast engineer friend,
the digital xmissions take somewhat less bandwidth than analog and
can be packed closer together. You don't have to skip chanels to get
the coverage you want as you often did with analog chanel assignments because
the stronger digital signal overrides the weaker one always.

You'll never get a bad picture, either all or nothing. I guess that's an
improvement.

[BlindHandyMan] REMOVING PAINT OR VARNISH WITH CHEMICALS

2008-01-08 Thread Boyce, Ray
* Many home repair jobs require you to remove a coat of old paint or varnish
before applying new finish.
* You can remove old paint or varnish using one of three different methods. The
first involves using a chemical paint or varnish remover to soften the painted
surface. Then, the old paint can be scraped off or washed away with water.
* Paint can also be sanded away or removed with heat. In most cases, chemical
paint removers are the easiest and fastest means for removing old paint or
varnish.
* Chemical paint and varnish removers are available in a variety of semi-paste
and liquid forms. Almost all chemical removers are referred to as paint
removers or paint strippers.
* There are several basic types of paint removers.
* Liquids are primarily for clean coatings and removing one or two layers of
paint. This formula dries too quickly to remove multiple layers of paint. Good
for detail areas or irregular surfaces. Also good for the stubborn spots after
a washable has been used.
* Brushables are a thick, paste-like formula that allows the paint remover to
be applied in heavy layers so that it stays wet in order to strip multiple
layers (up to 10 or more) in one application. Allows remover to cling to
vertical or even overhead surfaces. Some paint removers are the wash away or
water wash types. These terms simply indicate that the paint remover formula
includes an emulsifier that permits the chemicals to mix with water and
be rinsed away with a hose.
* Use care when using this type of remover on fine furniture. Too much water
can cause damage to the grain in the wood.
* Read the labels on all paint remover cans and follow the manufacturer's
instructions carefully.
* When removing paint, pour part of the paint remover into a small, wide mouth
metal can (Fig. 1). A can with a plastic resealable lid works especially
well.
* Using a good quality brush, spread the remover thickly and evenly over the
surface. Brush in one direction (Fig.2 ) Try not to brush over areas that are
already covered with paint remover.
* Sprayables are for easy application. Some removers come with a spray bottle
or sprayer. These removers are thin enough to spray yet thick enought to cling.
Most of these removers are water washable.
* Aerosols are the most convenient and fastest way to apply paint remover.
These removers are sprayed on and create a foamy, clinging layer thick enough
to remove several layers of paint. If needed, reapplication is much easier,
too! These removers are perfect for smaller jobs and detail work where brush
application is difficult. Aerosol paint removers are available almost
everywhere conventional removers are sold.
* Some newer removers contain chemicals that are more environmentally
friendly. These removers generally work slower than more conventional types,
but
some allow use indoors with good ventilation. These are more expensive, but for
people who are sensitive toward harsh chemicals, may offer an excellent
choice.
* In addition, several types of specialty removers are sold to remove certain
coatings or using on a specific surface, These include stain removers for
surfaces such as fiberglass.
* After scraping, use a suitable solvent such as ethanol or mineral spirits (or
water if a water washable paint remover was used.)
* For difficult to remove coatings, removal can be speeded up by scratching the
coating with coarse sandpaper, but be careful not to deeply scratch the
underlying surface. Then apply the remover and cover with plastic film to keep
the remover wet.
* Check the label of the paint remover to see how long you should leave the
remover on the surface, usually about 20 to 30 minutes. Test the condition of
the surface by rubbing the blade of a chemical-resistant scraper in a circular
motion to see if the paint has been loosened (Fig. 3).
* If the scraper cuts through to the surface of the wood, the paint remover has
done its job. Always wear chemical-resistant gloves and work in a
well-ventilated
area.
* Apply paint remover to a manageable area. Only cover an area that allows you
to scrape or wash away the paint remover before it dries.
* Lay the paint remover on thick, and do not stir it after applying it to the
surface. Give the chemicals time to act.
* To help keep the area clean and make clean-up easier, use a cardboard box
with a heavy layer of newspaper to catch the paint and remover.
* When the paint remover has done its job and the surface is softened (Fig. 3),
you are ready to remove the loose paint. It is usually best to remove as
much remover and paint as possible the first time. A scraper works well for
this (Fig. 4).
* Follow this with a medium grade of steel wool, old rags or an abrasive
scouring pad (Fig. 5).
* For hard-to-remove spots, you may need to apply a second coat of paint
remover. Wetting the steel wool with paint remover will also work in some cases.
* After cleaning and allowing to dry, most surfaces will need to be lightly
sanded to

Tom:

this is the theoretical and laboratory thinking.

in reality, should the signal become lower than the threshold, then their is
a toatl loss of interpretation resulting in thumps and bangs which are
particularly intrusive and unpleasnt.
that is why it is important to make sure that the sensitivity of the
receiver, gain of the antenna and signal strength give rise to a favourable
result.

never seen an oil pump take that long to give it up without some pretty ugly
noises coming from within. I could maybe go with a stuck pressure relief
valve that will allow the motor to circulate oil but not with enough
pressure to blow the light out.

We have recently bought two digital HD TVs, so I am ready for a digital

clifford,
I'd guess they will work, the basic frequency coverage seems to be the same.

If you try a converter, see if you can get a return if no go policy
from your dealer. If it works you should get a better
picture.

No you didn't. Summer before last I stayed in a hotel in Jacksonville that
had a retro fit into an older toilet. The was a clear water mark in the
tank where it used to fill up to. The inserted equipment was a plastic
thing that is like a fat capitol H with a third vertical piece in the
middle. After you flushed it the plastic tank filled compressing the air to
the same pressure as city water. There was no shut-off valve. It just
flowed until it couldn't any more. I assume there was a check valve to keep
water from flowing back out if the utility pressure should drop below what
was in the tank. When it flushed it was like one of those tankless toilets
that you often find in public restrooms. Quite a blast.

  Hi Bob,
That tip an inner bucket idea sonds odd. But that is my ignorance
  showing.
I do remember one high wall tank that seemed to work well consistantly.
As long as it works, I'm happy to have your guidence.
We have a hole in the floor, (covered) and I've been told a new vanity
 and
shower door are being added to the job. hahaha

The valve less have a kind of tank or bucket inside the tank that tilts

didn't work and inserts into older ones that didn't work right. They
displaced water volume in order to displace water usage.
The newer ones kind-a have the same tank size and some have the same
water volume; but, only the top part of the water is used. The water,
located in the upper portion of the tank has the power and momentum. The
water mass gives pressure even if it is not all used and the height of
drop adds power to flush faster.
I hope that makes it a little clearer and not muddied the whole idea.
The real old toilets with a water tank near the ceiling always flushed
good with a smaller water volume plus a roar and a half. Do you remember
those? It would not surprise me if they came back in designer fashion.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] saw horses

2008-01-08 Thread Bob Kennedy
Most saw horses today are adjustable. The right height is what ever is most
comfortable for you to work. I'm 6'3 so I don't want a set that are only 30
inches tall. If you are 5'8 you won't like using my 42 inch tall horses for
long. If you are planning to build your own, you have a lot of say in how tall
they are. If you are going to buy some, you'll have a lot of choices in ready
made adjustments. Confused yet?

I have 2 sets. A set of Stanley Fat Max and a set I bought from Home Depot
years ago. The Stanley horses are a lot of plastic but fairly light weight.
The set from Home Depot are steel and get rather heavy. But then to, the steel
set will hold a lot more weight.

Take a trip to a home center and have them show you their different choices.
Even if you want to build your own, make the trip. You can pick up on a lot of
ideas by seeing sets that are popular.

[BlindHandyMan] Installing Your Router Bit Correctly

2008-01-08 Thread Ray Boyce
To use router bits safely (and to get the best results from your router),
the router bits need to be installed properly into the router's collet.
Improper
installation of your bits can cause excessive chatter and could increase the
likelihood that the bits will break when in use.

First of all, before beginning any routing operation, check your bits to
make sure that they are clean, relatively
free of pitch,
and most of all, sharp. If the bit is dull, chipped, is excessively burned
or has any other defect, it should be sharpened or replaced before use.

When installing the bit into the collet, do not tighten the collet with the
bit seated. Instead, insert the bit until the shank reaches the bottom of
the collet, then ease it out about 1/8 - 1/4 before tightening the collet.

When the bit is tightened, there should be no less than a 3/4 length of the
shank in the collet. If your bit has a shank that is too short to ensure
3/4
is encased within the collet, then the bit should be replaced.

There are a few other safety measures to keep in mind whenever you use your
router. First of all, remember to always wear appropriate safety gear,
including
safety glasses
and
hearing protection
whenever you use your router.

Second, be sure to set your router to the
proper speed for your router bit.
Setting your router to an incorrect speed will not only affect the router's
performance, but also can cause the bit to break much more easily.

Also, before beginning any routing operation, be certain that you give the
router's motor time to come up to full speed for the chosen setting.
Beginning
to route before the bit is at full speed can give less than desired results.
