Re: [BlindHandyMan] Install a Ceiling Fan with Light Assembly

2008-07-12 Thread Scott Howell
Well now you do have a point. However, I can point out one example
where blowing the air up might be more beneficial. If you have your
windows open, the fan in this case will draw air in to the house. What
I do believe is in the end, whatever makes you feel more comfortable
matters. Now one other thought that comes to mind is if you have a
forced air system and depending upon where the vents are located,
might also play a role in which direction would work best.

These hard and fast rules ignore a basic fact of physics. What goes

come down. If your fan blows down the air comes up near the walls.

 it's
six of one, half a dozen of the other. We have ours set to up all
 the time
because the fan is over Sue's chair and she doesn't like to be blown

[BlindHandyMan] Hanging wind chimes

2008-07-12 Thread NANCY M HILL
Hi All,

My husband got me a set of wind chimes and a couple of them are big...as in
long. The length of the longest pipe in each set is:

30 40 50 and 60

That is just the length of the longest chime and does not include inches for
the part that hangs each chime. I don't think that the clapper or whatever
you call it will extend belong the chime. I have had the 30 one for a
couple of years now, and the others are to sort of fill out a quartet. The
original chime is hung from a wrought iron shepherd's hook and that has done
just fine. As a matter of fact, I was contemplating looking at a triple
one of those to see if it would be long enough and strong enough to house
the 30, 40 and 50 chimes. The 60 incher is the one that will likely prove
more challenging to hang. Not only is it long, but it weighs in at 22 lbs.
For it, I was thinking of getting an inch or so galvanized pipe because I
know I can get at least a 10' one. Enough of it would be driven into the
ground to hold the weight. I can't hang it from a straight pole, so I was
thinking of using angle joints and a piece or 2 of short pipe to make a
hook on the end to hold the chimes. The chimes are basically tuned to each
other and I was thinking that by arranging them in a sort of loose swirl
that the 4 different voices could then harmonize as nature allows...or as
the wind will. I have thought and thought and that is all that has come to
mind. I am mainly concerned about properly hanging the bigt one.

I need some fresh thoughts. I would really appreciate any helpful hints,
suggestions, stories of experiences and ways of hanging good sized wind
chimes.

Many thanks,
Nancy

I was thinking of putting a tire swing on that limb anyway...first I need to

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Hanging wind chimes

 Hi All,

My husband got me a set of wind chimes and a couple of them are big...as
 in
long. The length of the longest pipe in each set is:

 30 40 50 and 60

That is just the length of the longest chime and does not include inches
 for
the part that hangs each chime. I don't think that the clapper or
 whatever
you call it will extend belong the chime. I have had the 30 one for a
couple of years now, and the others are to sort of fill out a quartet.
 The
original chime is hung from a wrought iron shepherd's hook and that has
 done
just fine. As a matter of fact, I was contemplating looking at a triple
one of those to see if it would be long enough and strong enough to house
the 30, 40 and 50 chimes. The 60 incher is the one that will likely
 prove
more challenging to hang. Not only is it long, but it weighs in at 22
 lbs.
The chimes are basically tuned to
 each
other and I was thinking that by arranging them in a sort of loose swirl
that the 4 different voices could then harmonize as nature allows...or as
the wind will. I have thought and thought and that is all that has come
 to
mind. I am mainly concerned about properly hanging the bigt one.

I need some fresh thoughts. I would really appreciate any helpful hints,
suggestions, stories of experiences and ways of hanging good sized wind
 chimes.

 Many thanks,
 Nancy

the workpiece just sinks a bit in the rubber as you sand and it doesn't

2008-07-12 Thread Tyler Littlefield
Hello,
I'm not totally sure how this works, but there are different sizes. It makes
sense, because a motor can only handle so much--I wouldn't put blades on it if
it's not met for it.
You could probably get yourself some new blades, but it more than likely
wouldn't help the breeze.
The more breeze you have would probably be dependant on the length of the
blades.

[BlindHandyMan] classical palace bit

2008-07-12 Thread Lenny McHugh
Any idea what this router bit is used for? I am getting to order the sanding
mats and Mlcs has some specials on router bits that they bought out a
Canadian supplier.
I am adding a 1/2 round over . I never heard of the classical palace bit.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] changing ceeling fan blades.

2008-07-12 Thread Bob Kennedy
I don't think new blades will increase the breeze. You can take one off and
show it to someone in a home center or a fan specialty shop to see if they have
a replacement blade. Don't run the fan if you take a blade off.

If it is older, more than likely what you have is a tired motor and the whole
fan needs replaced.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hanging wind chimes

2008-07-12 Thread allen dunbar
hi to hang your chimes securely you can purchase some eye hooks that have a
clasp to hold the cord or chain or whatever it is hanging on they then screw
in to the wood eve or joist or wherever you hang them for security make sure
they are mounted far enough away that they have free room to blow without
hitting the structure they are mounted too good luck and much enjoyment

Now that one I hadn't thought about. Troube is that sometimes we get
 strong
winds up here and the chimes would literally beat the house.

 Thanks,

What about a good stout eyebolt or hook screwed into the fascia board of
 the
edge of the roof? That is where I like to hear chimes hanging.

 The
original chime is hung from a wrought iron shepherd's hook and that has
 done
just fine. As a matter of fact, I was contemplating looking at a triple
one of those to see if it would be long enough and strong enough to
 house
the 30, 40 and 50 chimes. The 60 incher is the one that will likely
 prove
more challenging to hang. Not only is it long, but it weighs in at 22
 lbs.
For it, I was thinking of getting an inch or so galvanized pipe because
 I
know I can get at least a 10' one. Enough of it would be driven into
 the
ground to hold the weight. I can't hang it from a straight pole, so I
 was
thinking of using angle joints and a piece or 2 of short pipe to make a
hook on the end to hold the chimes. The chimes are basically tuned to
 each
other and I was thinking that by arranging them in a sort of loose swirl
that the 4 different voices could then harmonize as nature allows...or
 as
the wind will. I have thought and thought and that is all that has come
 to
mind. I am mainly concerned about properly hanging the bigt one.

I need some fresh thoughts. I would really appreciate any helpful
 hints,
suggestions, stories of experiences and ways of hanging good sized wind
 chimes.

 Many thanks,
 Nancy

[BlindHandyMan] Slip-Proof Sanding Mat

2008-07-12 Thread Lenny McHugh
Looking around for other sanding mats I came across two interesting
articles. One stated that the pebble type sold at either HD or Lowes left
the pattern of the mat in the wood, so the guy tossed it and went to a
rubber mat. The other article I copied and pasted the tip and source link.
I think that Karen has some of this stuff so I plan to try it before I order
the mats. Looking around I think that MLCS has the best price because of the
free shipping. If Karen has the shelf liner I will try it next week.

A solution that is both practical and inexpensive is a roll of nonslip
shelf liner.
After cutting an appropriately sized piece of shelf liner off the
roll, simply place it on your work bench.
Place your workpiece on top of the shelf liner.
The wood you are sanding will now stay firmly in place.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Install a Ceiling Fan with Light Assembly

2008-07-12 Thread Dale Leavens
Last summer I installed one ceiling fan with a remote control operating device
purchased separately. This has a thermostatic control which will turn on the
fan and even increase the speed of the fan as the temperature of the room
increases. This can be set. Of course it is not particularly blind friendly and
wiring it in took a little ingenuity getting all that stuff into the electrical
box. I doubt I could have worked out the correct wiring either without my
seeing daughter home for the summer and available to help. Fortunately she is
one of those methodical types who always seems to be able to figure out the
instructions.
