Me Too!
Here in North East Pennsylvania it is freezing rain, that is when it is
raining and as soon as it touches the ground it freezes. Sure hope that
tonight Santa doesn't slide off any roofs. Days like this make the thought
of moving South sound good!
Seriously, I hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah
and a very safe handyman 2009.

[BlindHandyMan] music box over wound

2008-12-24 Thread Jewnnifer Jackson
Is there any way to repair a music box that has been over wound. Actually
it is a Christmas ornament with a tree and then the base and you turn the base
and it then rotates and plays a little tune. It was free from Freecycle, but
my boys do really like it. I thought it was certainly worth asking if there is
a way to repair it before I throw it out.

I hope everyone else is having a lovely holiday season. May you all be having
a peaceful season.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] music box over wound

2008-12-24 Thread Mike Rusk
If I were going to try and do it, I would turn the base counter clockwise to
remove it and expose the stem. Then I would find something to cover the stem
so as not to mess up the threads. Grip it with something like vice grips and
try to turn the stem counter clockwise. It shouldn't take much to free it up.
I have done it with a clock using the key and just being patient, forced the
mechanism to turn back, and it worked.
Have a Merry Christmas.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] music box over wound

2008-12-24 Thread Mike Rusk
You know, it could do that I suppose. I haven't done it a lot, but when I
tried it on the clock, I was very patient, didn't really force anything and it
worked.
I'm not sure about a smaller mechanism like the music box, but if she can get
it to maybe tinkle once or twice, the thing might start playing.
At any rate, the key would be not to force anything and maybe do a sort of
rocking motion.

[BlindHandyMan] harbor freight palm nailer

2008-12-24 Thread Lenny McHugh
Bill, Thanks for all of the information about the harbor freight palm
nailer, as expected it was a birthday gift. From the size of the box and the
weight it was an easy guess. Looking at it I do have a few questions that
someone will have to read to me from the enclosed literature. There is a bag
with an allen wrench and a large washer. Have to find out what they are for.
I did not feel a trigger, is it automatic when depressed on a nail?
Karen told me that I gave her a lot of problems trying to purchase it. She
confiscated the information that you sent and took it to the store. In the
store it is $39.99 and your information was $29.99. The guy at the store
told her that if she would print the add from the web page they would price
match. Again they can not look up anything on the web site. Everytime she
wanted to find it I was using the computer or asking what she was looking
for? Finally she was able to print the ad and took it to the store, Along
with the price match they also honored a 15% off one item coupon that I had.
The girl did good..
BTW today I turned 62, now if I can only figure out what I want to do when I
grow up.

2008-12-24 Thread Lee A. Stone

what we did many years ago with a old clock which twook two different
key entries to wind it up. was to soak it or I think a month in regular
kerosine . then before reassemblying we turned it back maybe a
quarter turn and then never turned it as tight again.Lee

I don't remember who ask me what pet friendly ice melt I was using. A
neighbor purchased a bag at the same time as me. He kept the packageing and
it is Majestic Ice Melt.

We purchased it last year at Lowes for around $13. Here is the description

on the market

the surface area longer.

a.. Creates a bond between the surface area and the elements to protect
agains corrosion and spalling.
b.. Protects your surface, including interlocking pavers.
Cost and time efficient

a.. Works longer, reducing the need for repeated applications
b.. Works better, reducing the volume of product needed for a single
application.
c.. Cuts down on corrosive damage to property, vehicles and equipment
Safer than rock salt

a.. Will not harm children, pets or plants; biodegradable
b.. Includes Dolomite, providing additional traction control
c.. No slimy residue results in minimal tracking on floors and carpets

Re: [BlindHandyMan] harbor freight palm nailer

2008-12-24 Thread Bob Kennedy
When you put air to it, the unit is energized. Stand the nail on end like
normal and slide the barrel over the head of the nail.

Once it bottoms out on the head of the nail, just put the palm of your hand
on the large flat surface that is now facing up. Apply pressure with your
hand and the fun starts. When you push hard enough it will start pounding.

Just a couple warnings. You have to hold the nail in place with the other
hand until it starts pounding. Don't hold it real tight or it will sting
for a while. And it only takes about 2 seconds to drive a 16 penny nail
completely into a 4 by 4. So it will go fast.

Remember to start the nail as straight as possible or it will bend just like
it was hit wrong with a hammer, only faster. Nails with heads aren't so
hard to work with. Finish nails take a special tip or they will walk to the
side and get stuck inside the barrel.

Have fun

Re: [BlindHandyMan] harbor freight palm nailer

2008-12-24 Thread Bill Stephan
Lenny and all:

another thing I like about Harbor Freight is that they always have a link to
download the owner's manual to their tools, and typically, I do that even
before I decide to buy something. I'll send you the manual when I get home
(I'm on the bus headed there now), but I think I recall reading that the Allan
wrench is only for repairs and cleaning, and that you're supposed to put a
couple drops of pneumatic tool in the thing prior to using.
Happy birthday and merry xmas.

[BlindHandyMan] Re: making table saw jigs

2008-12-24 Thread Keith Christian
Hi,

I am very interested in the discussion about making jigs. I actually
want to learn much more. I do not understand the terminology and the
techniques quite yet. So if you can explain or point me to a resource
that will be helpful, please share.

What are runners and how are they used with a table saw to make jigs?
It sounds like something that could be like an extra set of hands. I
have seen them referred to in several posts lately.

Several places sell them. One of the places I use a lot is Peachtree.
Their web site is
ptreeusa.com
Sometimes you can find things on Amazon that are less than what they
sell their own things for. Here is what Amazon said about the Peachtree
miter bar.

Snip.

The Peachtree miter bar sounds like it would be helpful with my table
saw, but I am not sure how quite yet. There are times that I want a
feather board to keep stock from shooting up or backwards. But I am not
sure if that is a possible purpose of the bar. It also sounds like it
may be a sliding fence or a replacement for my miter table. Can someone
clarify what some of the uses of a miter bar is for?

I have a Craftsman table saw. It is about 10 years old. It is not a
high end unit, but it does alright. It is direct drive and has a table
for attaching a router. The fence is not great, but it is ok. It has a
sliding miter table which is a little small, but works fine on small
projects.

There are metal support bars on the back and front side of the saw. The
fence, router table, and miter table mount to these bars and have a slot
on the top side. This is for fixing attachments to it. But I do not
know the size of the slot. But, I suspect it is a standard size.
However, it is a Craftsman and may be different.

The Fence has a similar slot on the top and router table side. It looks
like this is made for similar attachments. The slots are larger on the
fence than on the table saw. I imagine the t bar slides in this slot
and can be moved around the saw for a variety of jobs.

Below are different sized miter bar setups from PeachTree. Can someone
explain how the 24 inch vs. the 48 inch bar might be used? What is the
difference between the full sized t bar setup and the mini? The
description on the web side said it was for smaller work.

24" Aluminum Heavy Duty T-Track System (with one free knob & bolt)
$12.99

48" Aluminum Heavy Duty T-Track System (with two free knobs & bolts)
$19.99

24" Aluminum Mini T-Track System (with one free knob & bolt)
$9.99

48" Aluminum Mini T-Track System (with two free knobs & bolts)
$17.99

Thanks,

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Re: making table saw jigs

2008-12-24 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Keith,

The runners we have been referring to are essentially sticks which fit into the
miter slots of the table saw or maybe a router table or I suppose even the
slots of a disk sander or a band saw.

I have cut them from hardwood, 3/4ths wide and 3/8ths thick but you can buy
high density poly or aluminum or even steel ones already milled to that size.
These are fixed to the bottom of a board to keep it tracking in the slots.

Probably the most common use is a panel cutting jig where you take a piece of
sheet goods, say quarter inch Baltic birch plywood, fix a fence to the trailing
edge and runners to the bottom to form a huge fixed miter gauge for trimming
doors and other panels square. Of course you can make them for any angle, wood
turners make them to cut wedges to fit together to form 10 or 12 sided or more
pieces for turning so that they have much less end grain in the outer edge.

You can make jigs for cutting the cheeks for pennons, all sorts of things.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Another Antenna question

bill,
The only reason to use braided wire is it is more flexible and won't tend to
break so much from wind or other vibrations.. Other than that, it makes no
difference at all except for physical strength.

Don't forget to use some kind of insulators wherever you hang it or wherever
it passes very near any other object. Almost any plastic will do for
insulators.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Another Antenna question

2008-12-24 Thread Tom Fowle
I regret to have to gently disagree with Dale, but in the case of a general
coverage receive antenna neither of Dale's points is really relivant.

Although it's true that in a resonant transmitting antenna, the bandwidth is
greater with larger element diameter, this won't be important in an antenna
whose resonant frequency probably won't be known or make much difference.

Also, every article I've seen on wire antennas says to use stranded wire,
most often coper clad steel wire for serious transmitting wires.
Particularly in receive antennas the eddy current won't be signifficant.

The increased durability of stranded wire will be of more importance than
all of these considerations unless the whole thing will be protected from
weather wind and any other movement.

[BlindHandyMan] stranded wire preferred here

2008-12-24 Thread clifford
Dear List Members:
For outside antennas, I have had much better results with copper coated
steel stranded wire. While some of the solid wire is fairly tough, it tends to
break with a lot of bending, and when wire is exposed to the elements, some
bending is inevitable.
Some theorists also claim less resistance since there is more total surface
in a stranded conductor, as opposed to a single wire. Supposedly, the currents
move along the surface of a conductor. Mind you, I have never tried to verify
those theories in person.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

Re: [BlindHandyMan] music box over wound

2008-12-24 Thread Tom Fowle
You might try very gently twisting the base in the wind direction to see if
you can feel the rachet click at all. Then gently rock it back and forth
just where the rachet wants to click and see if you can get it to release
and go backwards thus releasing the spring.

If there is any chance you can get it apart, unlikely, you'd look for a
large toothed gear type thing with a spring held piece that grabs the teeth.
This is the rachet that is supposed to let you wind it only one way. You
might be able to hold the spring loaded piece away from the toothed wheel
and let the wheel go backwards.

Gently is the theme here it's probably plastic and cheap.

Good luck
Tom

Iwish all of you a grand holiday season and a fabulous new year.

Tom Fowle
Near San Francisco where it maybe gets down to the high 30s some times and
hasn't rained enough yet.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Another Antenna question

2008-12-24 Thread Dale Leavens
Is that correct tom?

I was always under the impression that stranded wire was inferior as an
antenna. It certainly isn't used for windings on the graphite antennas in
radios or the loop antennas in the back of those old tube radios although it is
used in the feed lines of 15 ohm ribbon cable.

I understood that reactance losses are pretty high particularly at the higher
frequencies of RF.

It is a long time though since I studied such things.
