Mostly you cannot. Not without plugs and since the plugs are larger than the
screws and therefore the holes this is not a practical solution unless you
are willing to remove the frame, set the plugs and reinstall the frame.

Nice thing about silicone is that it sticks after only a moment and you only
need apply a little pressure. Once it hits a clean surface it sticks.

Any of those glues will do fine but your problem is clamping the frame
fairly tightly to the plaster while the glue drys. If it can move the joint
will fail.
Some wood screws into the plaster may be enough if you don't want to go
clear through into the studs.
Use flat head screws and counter sink them to be less obnoxious.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] measure tire tread depth

2009-01-04 Thread Bob Kennedy
Actually that was a penny. You weren't supposed to see the top of Abe's head.
The cross bars Ray talked about are very noticeable to the touch. If you can
get your finger tips into the tread enough to easily feel the bottom of the
tread, dragging your finger inside the tread walls in either direction around
the tire will bring you to the wear bars. Basically they are ridges running
crossways to the treads.

They make tread wear indicators. It's a little tool with a large shoulder and
what looks like a plunger running vertically. You set the shoulder on top of
the treads and push down on the plunger. When it bottoms out there is a
reading that shows to tell the depth.

For us that can't read the tool, you can use the brass set up bars. If my
tires get within an eighth of an inch, they've out lived their usefulness as
far as I'm concerned. I've been in enough wrecks in my time and the way it
rains down here an eighth or less will let you hydroplane like you're on ice.

use to be a rule of thumb about a nickle. if the tread didn't go past
the top of the head. then it was time to replace the tire.
Not sure how good it was, but saw a lot of tires sold in the station that way.

[BlindHandyMan] Puzzle

2009-01-04 Thread Betsy Whitney
Aloha to all,
This may not be a good question for this list as many of us are
blind, but I found some little grainy stuff in a couple places in my
house. It looks and feels like dried powdered yeast. The grains are
round. The puzzle is that everyone I know says that it does not look
like ant or roach or mouse deposits. Some of it was on my headboard
of my bed and some under my stove. We see no webs or trails of little
creatures and have recently had the house checked for termites. I'm
really puzzled. Ideas?
Betsy

I have some wheels in my workshop, I will give it some thought.

The problem is though the ground is so uneven and there is a ledge at the
back of the garages I would have to lift it over.

But I will see what I can come up with.

use to be a rule of thumb about a nickle. if the tread didn't go past
the top of the head. then it was time to replace the tire.
Not sure how good it was, but saw a lot of tires sold in the station that way.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] measure tire tread depth

2009-01-04 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi Lenny
Here is what I founds
Wear bars in the tires start showing when there is 2 mm of tread left. These
bars show up as solid bands of rubber across the face of the tire. If you
have wear bars showing, the tires need replacing. Driving on wet or muddy
roads requires more tread depth. New tires start with about 11 to 13 mm of
tread but should be replaced when they get down to about 4 mm remaining.
Inspect tires on a regular basis, looking for uneven wear caused by improper
inflation or incorrect wheel alignment. Catching a problem early can
increase tire life dramatically..

[BlindHandyMan] Glossary of Audio/Video Terms

2009-01-04 Thread Ray Boyce

Analog Audio -
Attempting to capture the original sound in its entirety and then
reproducing the original sound in its entirety. Analog audio has the risk of
also reproducing and possibly amplifying noise or distortion. Digital audio
is replacing this technology.

Analog Video -
Attempting to capture the original video in its entirety and then
reproducing the original video in its entirety. Analog video has the risk of
also reproducing and possibly amplifying noise or distortion. Digital video
is replacing this technology.

Audio Video Receiver (A/V Receiver) -
A receiver, amplifier, audio and video switcher in one unit encompassing
sound decoding with processing allowing for surround sound and multi-channel
distribution.

AWG - (American Wire Gauge) -
Accepted standard of measure for the diameter of wire or cable. A smaller
number gauge represents a larger diameter. e.g. 12 AWG wire is a larger
diameter wire than 14 AWG wire.

Baseband Signal -
Primarily a video only signal, transmitting raw video without frequency
shifting, multiplexing, or frequency modulation. Imagine the video signal
being pushed down the coaxial cable line at a very low frequency (5 MHz).
Baseband signaling is used for CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) and for some
home automation products.

Braid -
A shield used around wire or cable to prevent interference caused by Radio
Frequency Noise or Interference. Most cable shields are small diameter woven
strands of copper or aluminum.

Broadband Signal -
A video and audio signal multiplexed/frequency shifted to a higher frequency
in the 54 MHz to 890 MHz range for cable TV and up to 2.2 GHz for the mini
dish satellite. This is the common method for video transmission by cable TV
and DSS satellite.

CCTV -
Closed Circuit Television, a platform used for security cameras and
monitors, which operates on baseband signal. CCTV is very popular in the
security community.

Chrominance -
The portion of the video signal carrying the color.

Coaxial Cable -
A cable with two conductors that basically are parallel with a common axis
used to control impedance in low voltage cables. Consisting of a center
conductor, dielectric, foil, braid, and outer jacket.

Coaxial "F" Connector -
When audio and video are transmitted on the same coaxial cable, used to
connect a TV to cable, satellite, antenna or VCR.

Component Video -
When a video signal is separately transmitted in three component colors of
red, green, and blue. Provides superior detail, true color, and high
resolution.

Composite Video -
A video signal transmission where the chrominance (color) and luminance
(brightness) are transmitted as one signal and are not separated. The
transmission is along one coaxial cable with RCA connectors at each end.

C.S.A. -
Canadian Standards Association, The Canadaís Equivalent to UL.

Datacom Accessories -
Wall Plates, Inserts, Jacks, and Wiring use to connect computers and
peripheral devices (printers) together.

Decibel (dB) -
Accepted unit of measure to express amplitude or power difference. A common
measure for sound and also used often in measuring effectiveness of
amplifiers.

Dielectric -
A non-conductive material used to insulate around a cable conductor that
helps to retain charge.

Digital Audio -
The recreation of sound by high-speed digital sampling. Analog signals are
converted to a chain of 0's and 1's allowing for sophisticated decoding and
encoding and electronic manipulation. The risk of reproducing and possibly
amplifying noise or distortion is minimized.

Digital Audio Cable -
Allows for Digital Audio multiple channels to be transmitted through one
cable. This cable is the purest quality transmission of Digital Audio
Signal.

Digital Optical Fiber Cable -
Sends a Digital Audio multiple channels by using a light transmission and
therefore is virtually noise and distortion resistant.

Digital Video -
The recreation of video by high speed digital sampling. Analog signals are
converted to a chain of 0's and 1's allowing for sophisticated decoding and
encoding and electronic manipulation. The risk of reproducing and possibly
amplifying noise or distortion is minimized.

Diplexer (non-amplified) -
A device used to combine antenna and satellite signals, which operate at
different frequencies, into a signal, which can travel through one cable. A
non-amplified diplexer is used at the antenna and satellite dish location
when the antenna is not amplified. A non-amplified diplexer is always used
at the satellite receiver location to separate signals and distribute to
TVs.

Diplexer (amplified) -
A device used to combine an amplified antenna and satellite signals, which
operate at different frequencies, into a signal, which can travel through
one cable. An amplified diplexer is used at the antenna and satellite dish
location only when the antenna is amplified. A non-amplified diplexer is
always used at the satellite receiver location to separate signals and
distribute to TVs.

Yeah, I need to look at the wall and see what kind of shape it's in. This
house was built in 1927, and while it's been very well maintained over the
years, there are occasional surprises.

The only other idea that comes to mind would be to drill a couple holes
through the back of the box and through the drywall. Then insert a couple of
those expanding plugs in the drywall and drive screws through the back of
the box into the plugs. It might offer a more dependable connection than the
caulk.

There's a springloaded sort of trapdoor where the mail person's supposed to
stick the mail, then a more or less vertical metal schute with a sloping
bottom. At the end of this schute, inside the house, is a frame, with a
door you lift to remove mail from the bottom of the schute. This wooden
frame is the piece that's coming unattached from the wall, which I guess
probably is drywall. I might I guess be able to use a little L bracket with
a sheet metal screw in the metal part of the schute and a wood screw in the
wooden frame, but I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible.

Thanks.

You can't really glue to drywall. That's what it sounds like you want to do.

Is the mail shoot one of those with a spring loaded flap that goes through a
door and the mail ends up on the floor? Or is the shoot cut through the
wall?

I'm having a little trouble with the mental picture and it's hard to suggest
anything until I'm clearer on that.

We have an old sort of mail schute that ends in a wooden frame with a door
you lift on hinges to extract the mail. I noticed today that the frame is
sort of detaching itself from the plaster wall it's mounted on. It's not
apparent to me how it was affixed in the first place, I can't find screws or
other fasteners. I guess I can put some glu on it and hope for the best,
though my gluing skills are pretty lacking as in I tend to use too much.
What would be a good glu to use? I have the basic Elmers, and I believe
some carpenter's glu as well along with construction adhesive.

Thanks for any thoughts.

2009-01-04 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi Bob

I never know what I am going to find under the house when I do my
inspections.

The key is to never store any wood under the house for that will bring
termites and other things like snakes.

All my sheds are on concrete floors with steel framing and steel sides and
roofs.

The house has a double garage underneath and for the most part up off the
ground except towards the back where it is about two feet off ground level.

Both houses either side have had termite infestations because they have not
kept up a good termite barrier going over the years

Termites can quickly destroy a home so I do my best to stop this from
happening.

Hi All

Well I have just completed my yearly inspection and termite spraying.

It took me about 3 hours to complete.

I first check all bearers and floor supports with a hammer banging them and
checking for a solid sound not a hollow sounding resonance.

After I am satisfied that everything is as it should be.

I put on my overalls and my chemical respirator gloves and goggles and a hat
for it is easy to either bump your head on something or head but a support
pier.

Mix up the chemical and start spraying making sure I spray the entry points
like the ends of main bearers and anything near a garden on the other side
of the Brick wall.

I spray along all main supports and under the suspended floor area.

I then spray all the ground under the house so it is poisoned and an area
which termites find uninviting.

I then come out from under the house and spray along the brick wall where
the main supports are sitting.

These have galvanised ant caps on them, they supposed to stop any intrusion
up through the bricks but I like to be sure I have covered as many entry
points as possible.

After this I wash down my spray unit for it is very dirty after dragging it
around under the house.

Clean down my respirator and wash my gloves put everything away.

Then go and have a long shower to remove any poison drift I have on me and
have a beer.

Another job completed.

[BlindHandyMan] changed subject, re: amplified antennas

2009-01-04 Thread Tom Fowle
Changed the subject line here to be more better.

Unlike chocolate, you can have too much amplification. After a point you
amplify the "ghosts" and unwanted signals more than the desired signals
because the TV's input stages can get saturated and distort.

So far as I know amplification with TV signals, which are F.M., frequency
modulated, is only usefull if you want to bring a marginal signal up just a
bit. Of course all amplifiers bring the existing noise with them, and
introduce some internal noise too.

I doubt any amp will bring signals you can't get at all up to a usefull
level.

I'd also seriously doubt both the 50Db claim and it's usefullness.

If a signal is in the noise, amplification will usually not solve that.

This is true for TV only, with shortwave it's a slightly different story,
although you can still have too much gain.
