Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical color and orientation
Typical when a machine, transformer of similiar equipment has such a variety of colors it is tapped for different voltages. No they don't seem to be a set standard. On the cable he used it would most likely be used in some application requiring four conductors. This could be a three way switch that needed a neutral in the box, perhaps a couble gang box with a outlet. Or a three phase system where there are three hot lines , a neutral and a equipment grounding conductor. The three colored wires in three phase is each 120 to neutral and 208 between any color.. But hey wire is wire and can be reidentified and used however. [BlindHandyMan] Audio Beacon
Hi all, I'm trying to find an audio beacon that can be activated with a remote control. The unit must have a range of 50 to 100 feet. The volume must be loud enough to be easily heard from the farthest range of the remote. Adjustable volume would be nice but it is not an absolute requirement. Ability to be powered from an AC outlet would also be nice but, again, it is not an absolute requirement. The unit will be located outdoors but will never be subjected to rain or snow. I did a search on Google and was deluged with hundreds of thousands of hits of which very few applied. If anyone owns or can recommend such a device, I would greatly appreciate your getting back to me. Thanks. Take care, Ed Przybylek [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Just a note of interest. My sailboat uses water for ballast. Before any sails are raised, one must remember to fill the ballast tank. It is a 150 gallan tank made into the very bottom of the hull. I think that would be about 1200 pounds or so. Very necessary on those windy days. [BlindHandyMan] For Jobs around the Home
By Matt Weber Equally useful to the home-improvement DIY'er as well as the pro on the go, portable workstations offer convenience and practicality rolled into one easy-to-store package. The best portable workstations combine a sturdy work surface with a lightweight and compact mode of storage and transport. The 425 now clamps vertically. Of course, bells and whistles are nice, too. One of the flagship workstations of the past few decades is the Black and Decker Workmate, invented in 1961 by Ron Hickman. As the story goes, Hickman had accidentally sawn a chair in half while using it as a saw stand, so he resolved to make an extra hand. Despite the fact that Hickman was an accomplished inventor-it was Hickman who designed the famous Lotus Elan as chief engineer for the car company-many manufacturers reportedly turned up their nose at his workstation until Black and Decker took on exclusive rights in 1973. The rest is history, and it's still being written. Over the decades, millions upon millions of Workmates have been sold, with the original design evolving into a foldable space-saving workstation with table jaws that clamp like a vise, adjustable work height, adjustable table size and even vertical clamping. The Workmate 425 folds for easy storage. The success of the Workmate has sparked the imaginations of many inventors since, and portable workstations are now available from a broad range of manufacturers and in a wide array of styles and designs. Here are five of the latest and greatest. Black Decker's Portable clamping Station weights only 25 pounds. Workmate 425 I've had a baseline model of the Workmate floating around my shop for several years, and I found some very welcome advancements with the design of the new 425 model. For starters, when clamping the table jaws together, my old model requires the user to use both hands to turn the handles in tandem (in order to keep the jaws parallel). However, the new design offers a One-Handed Clamp system with a clever clutch design that enables the user to tighten the jaws with a single hand, or to adjust each side of the jaw independently for out-of-square clamping. A removable center panel provides an extra work surface for large jobs, or for use as a tool stand for a miter saw http://www.extremehowto.com/xh/article.asp?article_id=60787 http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif, drill press, etc. Plus the front jaw now swings up for vertical clamping, which increases flexibility when clamping odd-shaped objects, and provides the necessary downward force to hold some large overhanging items securely to the table surface. Plus, the tried and true features of the older versions remain with the 425, only more enhanced. The durable orange swivel pegs can be mounted in the table surface at various locations for a wide range of clamping applications, and the pegs are now larger with more gripping surface area than with my old Workmate. The table surface includes a 180-degree angle gauge, as well as marked measurements in both metric and U.S. customary. The legs fold away for a lower operating height (when working with large work pieces), and the entire workstation folds down for easy storage. The heavyweight steel construction of the Workmate 425 supports up to 550 pounds with a 29-by-20-5/8-inch work surface. Black Decker Portable Clamping Workstation The first thing that struck me about this new feather in Black and Decker's cap was the suitcase-like portability of the bench. To open, just release a couple of latches in the table top, lift it up and the legs drop down and lock into place. Fold up the side supports, lock the center support in position, and the workstation is ready to go in seconds. It converts just as quickly back into carrying case mode with a thin 4-inch profile, weighing a super-light 25 pounds, including a convenient tote handle. The table includes two removable, adjustable clamps. The clamps can be set into recessed channels on the bench top and used for horizontal clamping. The clamps can also be used vertically by slipping them through the slots in the table top-or just clamp them to the edge of the table. The bench supports up to 400 pounds and has a work surface measuring 33-1/4-by-21-1/2 inches. This new model from Black and Decker offers a unique amenity among the workstations reviewed in this article: storage shelves for tools. Lower shelves at the front and rear of the table provide almost two square feet of storage capacity each, for clamps, hammers, tape measures, pencils, drills or any other tool that'll fit. Both the Portable Clamping Station and the Workmate 425 offer a 2-year warranty. (www.blackanddecker.com) Skil X-Bench Another compact storage option is Skil's multi-faceted X-Bench. At roughly 45 pounds, it requires a little muscle to carry but offers a working surface of 53-by-23 inches with aluminum legs that adjust the table height from 24

And to confirm what has been siad the hot black is the narrow slot on the right of a outlet with the ground. On the plug the narrow straight blade is the hot, the white is wider of the two. That's the kind that plug into the back of a computer, audio amplifier, or various power supplies. It's a 6 sided plug, rectangular in nature with one side being bowed and made of angled corners. [BlindHandyMan] Another Big Project Underway.
Hi Everyone Some time back we built a steel shed for a caravan we have just sold. We at that time instead of concreting the floor dug in precast concrete slabs for the wheels to run in on. I need this shed now so my Son can put his car in it for we are taking his shed which has the dor height to put our new caravan in. Now we have decided to concrete this area which measures 33 by 11 feet. I am getting a Bob Cat in to dig out this area down to an existing concrete slab in my workshop so both floor levels will be the same height. The Bob Cat has to also dig up an existing slab which I had for my box trailer to stand on. After this area has been levelled out then the reinforcing mesh can go in and the concrete poured. The floor will have a slight slope from the back towards the front and an apron out the front of the shed to match my workshop I am going to put a steel door on the shed but until I find out what type I can use because of the head height above the door opening I cannot say just yet. I will let you know when I get to this stage. Ray [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I'm betting the blue was actually green in which case that would be the wire for a 3 way switch. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Audio Beacon
Ed, I had one of those when I lived in Charlotte. I lived in a new neighborhood so I stuck a wireless doorbell outside the house and when I was getting close to the house, I would push the remote making the doorbell go off. The range on those are never consistent, so I tried them out at Lowes before I bought one. I put batteries in the two parts and held the doorbell part. I sent one of my kids way down an isle with the button and we would count tiles to see how far away it worked. Another idea that just came to mind though. You said it would be nice if it worked on AC. I bought one of the remote start outlets from Woodcraft. Basically it is a box with an outlet you can plug something into. There is a cord that plugs into a regular outlet on the wall. Once that part is in place there is a little button with a key type chain on it, much like the little fobs you see for remote opening of cars. You push that button and the power goes on. So if you wanted a noise, you could plug in a radio, or get the parts from Radio Shack to make an AC powered buzzer. This remote I have runs my dust collector and I know it works close to 100 feet, and that was through a wall too. I had the remote clipped on my belt and forgot about it. I was walking down the street and hit the button by mistake and heard the dust collector start up. This little gem is sold at Woodcraft, but Rockler and some other places sell them too. I got mine on sale for right at $55. And they are normally about $65 to $69. It's an idea that would work without having to carry something bulky around. - Original Message - From: Edward Przybylek To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, April 30, 2009 1:55 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Audio Beacon Hi all, I'm trying to find an audio beacon that can be activated with a remote control. Thanks. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Audio Beacon
Hi Bob, A remotely controlled electrical outlet is a much better idea than an audio beacon. I like the flexibility of being able to connect any one of a number of sound sources. As a matter of fact, I think there's still a siren in the basement that I used to teach my cat to stay out of the living and dining rooms. It was connected to an infrared sensor that turned the siren on for five seconds everytime the cat tried to go into the living or dining room. Don't ever believe anyone who tries to tell you you can't train a cat. After 2 trips of the sensor, the cat never again entered the forbidden rooms. I wonder what the neighbors might think if I began using that thing to find my home. Thanks. Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical color and orientation
No, first the sears water heater was wired with white, red, blue, and black when I took the line from the breaker it was a 10/3 white, red and black no one could tell me how to hook it up. even the sears manual or support could not tell me. I had to get an electrician in to figure it out and hook it up. Years later when weremodeled the bathroom the electrician used 12/4 with ground, which had the blue wire. - Original Message - From: Bob Kennedy bobke...@bellsouth.net To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, April 30, 2009 9:24 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical color and orientation I'm betting the blue was actually green in which case that would be the wire for a 3 way switch.
