[BlindHandyMan] Cleaning our Upstairs Apartment!

2009-11-05 Thread Claudia
Hi All,

Our upstairs apartment has been vacant, for quite some time now, and we're
trying to get it ready for possible tenants.
The walls feel quite greasy, as well as the countertops, stove,
refrigerator, etc.
What product could we use up there to do some intense cleaning, one that
won't create fumes?
Thanks.

called orange glow or whatevr. leaves a nice scent. the worst in
apartments is usually the kitchen and the bathroom. Lee

I thought we just did this last week. Maybe I'm just getting senile.

Anyway, I really think we did answer this a week or so ago and the answer
was TSP. 1 to 2 Tablespoons per gallon of water. TSP is Tri Sodium
Phosphate.

If you're going to paint it, all you can do is sand or grind the rust away.

Make sure to clean it before painting with some sort of de-greaser like mineral
spirits or equivalent. Use this after the rust is removed.

I can not remember the name of the product. Years ago when we had a boat The

Hi,
you need to brush off most of the rust first with a wire brush. Then you
get what we call hear a rust converter. I think this is phosphoric
acid. Not sure how to spell that though. you follow the directions on that.
Then you use a mettle primer then paint as you would any metal surface.
Max.

Nope Sorry,

I didn't mean to confuse anyone. A couple of weeks ago, we talked about the
soot on my wall ceiling.

Now, we're trying to get our upstairs ready.

Do I need something that's like a degreaser? Would Formuly 409 also work?

We do have a steam cleaner; it's a small one, and we've never used it, but I
know the floors will need a thorough scrubbing, too.

Thanks.

It's still out there. A company named Duro, the Lock Tight people, also made
something that kind of smothered rust when it was applied.

If you have a bad case of rust, and it's not on something fine like a table
saw, look online at automotive restoration places. They are the ones that deal
with rust on a large scale.

One of my favorites is eastwood.com

They carry about anything you can think of dealing with rust. They are in
Pennsylvania, so they are in the salt belt. Much like I was when I lived near
Buffalo.

Hi all,

I think the paint you're talking about is called DuroExtend. I'm not sure
if that's the correct spelling, though. I used it to paint an old rusty
mailbox at my previous house and it worked great. After painting the
mailbox with DuroExtend, I painted it with a couple of coats of outdoor
paint and, as far as I know, the mailbox is still in front of the house.

Take care,

Clifford! NAVAL JELLY! Several uses for a product with that name springs to
mind. One has to be
careful to examine the spelling, and what of those poor souls to whom spelling
is a mysterious
subject never to be plumbed? If they should get their hands on it, where is it
going to be spread?
My skin crawls at the very thought!

Dear List Members:
Back when I was tackling more handyman type jobs, I used a product called,
Naval Jelly, for
removing rust. It may no longer be on the market.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

If you're going to paint it, all you can do is sand or grind the rust
 away.

Make sure to clean it before painting with some sort of de-greaser like
mineral spirits or equivalent. Use this after the rust is removed.

I can not remember the name of the product. Years ago when we had a boat
The
trailer was very rusty. We used a wire brush and painted with this
 chemical
that bonded with the rust making a nice black paintable surface. Maybe if
you would ask at some of the home improvement stores they would carry the
product. I will look around to see if I can locate it.

2009-11-05 Thread Max Robinson
After I saw Jewel's post I realized my mistake and knew I would get teased
over it. I think if you put the real Naval Jelly in your navel you probably
would break the 3 minute mile. On the other hand if you used Kentucky
Jelly...well...that's getting too far off topic.
