the problem with the HB talker is that it is small. I have one for a back up unit and my GE is still going strong since 1986. The talking isn't complete with the HB. I think one of the big button Panasonics would be better. One of the list members has one and I've asked him for the model number. [BlindHandyMan] water question
Hello folks, My female cohabitants have been noticing the following concerns with the water in the house: cloudy hot, musty smelling and tasting cold. I may have noticed that the other day. We haven't drained he hot water tank ever, twenty years, and I plan on it. but what can one do other than running the cold for 10 seconds. I live in Philadelphia and do not know if there has been a drop in purification as of late. Can one easily clean the pipes? Thanks

and believe it or not, in the 1970's G.E. was the one that McDonalds went to for assistance with their cash regesters. It seems that the folks they were hiring couldn't keep track of menu item pricing. So G.E. was asked to make a new type of cash regester, one with pictures on keys, that would represent programmed cash ammounts. My uncle in G.E.'s valley forge aero-space devsion said "that's the way it's gonna go I tell ya; dummies point at pictures." Well, I don't think Bill Gaites would want his users called dummies. Re: [BlindHandyMan] new microwave
Lenny, One of my favorite features on my current microwave is the levels. I can thaw for 30 minutes, warm for 2 minutes and give it a blast of high for 30 seconds by programming power and time for three levels and then walk away. Mine also has a simple timer, in that I set it to power level #1 which is no power and can use that as a timer, or a spacer when programming. Can your panasonic do this? The Hamilton Beach is capable of just 2 levels of programming BTW. Thanks On Mon, 4 Jan 2010, Lenny McHugh wrote: > We purchased the Panasonic nn-sn-778s. RE: [BlindHandyMan] water question
None of this is easy done. Can it be done yes. That old of water heater especially if it is electric would do more harm than good. It will more than likely break causing you to have to buy another one. My recommendation is a whole house water filter. This will fix your present problem but want fix the pipes or water heater. Also a second water filter on your bathroom lavatories and your kitchen sink and one on your refrigerator, if you have a ice maker or ice and water thru the door. This is just me what I would do. Unless you have plenty of money and then call a Plummer. [BlindHandyMan] roter zip
Hello there. what is the differents between this and a regular roter? when we built a shed in grade 12 we took the roter to cut out the door and window. I did it using the hand over hand method so not really sure how someone would go about cutting a hole out of wood. It was a sighted teacher that was really good at accomidating, or finding a way that I could use the plainer and saws by myself. I had a braille measuring tape and used masking tape (the one on the role that you rip off) to mark my measurements and then did my work. The only thing that I didn't use, and would love to k know how, was the radial arm saw. Blaine [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Re: [BlindHandyMan] roter zip
I think what you are referring to is a router. The Roto Zip is basically a palm router. It can cut through some things but I don't think it has the power to cut out an opening for a door. I guess it's possible but it's kind of like trying to drive a spike with a tack hammer. You would normally use a bigger hammer for the spike and you would use a larger router to make a cut out. Roto Zips are more like a Dremmel tool on steroids. You can cut out things like electrical boxes through drywall or lighter duty things like quarter inch plywood. I think of them more as a new gadget and some people will buy new gadgets because of the gee wiz factor they bring with them. I would think the best uses for a blind person wanting one of these would be as a laminate trimmer or something along those lines. While they aren't super powerful, they could make a mess of something if you didn't have some sort of guide to use. - Original Message - From: Blaine Deutscher To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, January 09, 2010 2:26 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] roter zip Hello there. what is the differents between this and a regular roter? when we built a shed in grade 12 we took the roter to cut out the door and window. Re: [BlindHandyMan] roter zip
I have owned a radial arm saw for about 35 years. They are simple to use after you get them set up for the cut you desire, but take a bit more setting up than some other styles of saws. Even though I have a table saw, compound miter saw, etc., I still find myself using my radial arm saw a good amount of the time. I particularly like it for making a fast 90 degree cross-cut. [BlindHandyMan] Blocking the wind.
All: We have a sort of three-season room on the north side of our house. It faces off into a yard surrounded by privacy fences and a couple garages. The room is sort of unique. It started life as just an open deck. We had a pre-fabricated aluminum room added shortly after we took up residence here. This room is all aluminum and glass with two aluminum doors and many sliding windows. During winter we use this room as a sort of mud room, and it's where we groom our dogs as well. Because of that, when it was constructed, the deck floor was taken up, and an aluminum screen was put in place, and the deck flooring was then replaced on top of this screen. Our idea was that snow from boots and shovels and dogs, and spillage from our fountain etc. would just drain through the cracks between the decking, an bugs couldn't come through either and that part's worked well for us. We've been having snow here, more snow than anybody's seen in twenty or thirty years. It blows here too, and there's quite a bit of snow piled and drifted around this three season room. To keep it more or less useable, we have one of those Sun Twin 5,000 BTU heaters there, and typically, it keeps the temperature between 20 an 25 degrees above the outdoor temperature. This year though, it's been keeping the room about 30 or 35 degrees above the outside temperature. I imagine a lot of this is because of the snow around the foundation. There are several gaps that allow air to circulate pretty freely under thestructure. So, it might be a good idea to block these gaps, though probably only during the Winter months. Does anyone know if there might be say, bladders, that I could fill with a compresser that would form themselves in a way so as to fill gaps ofa few incheshere or ther, and if so, what is the correct term for them? Thanks in advance for any input on this. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Blocking the wind.
hi yep the snow is a good insulator. up here in Minnesota the guys will take the snowblowers and blow the snow agenst the sides of the house and keep it warm that way. as for the fillers for blocking the wind, blow up some large garbage bags and stuff them in or stuff them in and then blow them up [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Blocking the wind.
Is there any good reason why you wouldn't want to block air infiltration in the summer as well? It would be my inclination to wrap the inside of what ever skirting you have around the deck foundation with something like extruded polystyrene sheets and seal them together with the tape sold for that purpose. I would look for ways of sealing it tightly at the top and bottom, keep any air from entering or leaving except between the room and under the floor. Unless the dogs are piddling through the deck or for some other reason you need to air the area to keep stink down there isn't any good reason to loose heated or cooled air to the good outdoors and, it is expensive as well. I would consider insulating under the roof as well if there is a convenient and practical way to do so. You would probably find your heater raised the temperature 50 or 60 degrees, you might even find you want to turn it off quite a bit. If you feel the need to circulate air through the structure you can always open the windows and in that way choose when and how much cold you require. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
[BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys
Earlier this evening my wife was driving home. For a few seconds the gauges on the car went nuts. The speed odometer went up to 80 and then back to 50, the gas gauge dropped and the light went on. The temp went way up and then back to normal. It is on a 2003 grand caravan. When all of the gauges went nuts itonly lasted a few seconds. Wondering if this is because something in ghe computer or electrical is starting to fail or if some rf got into the system. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along.
