Hi, my daughter's boy friend works for a landscaper and plows during the
winter. His company has this stuff called magic salt. It has a whiskey
product in with the salt which doesn't harm the walkways or corrode
anything. I will keep the ice and snow soft up to 25 degrees below. It
really works. Now, the Home Depot version is called Blizzard wizard... Andy

I pay $18 and get it shipped to me as I haven't access often.
That's the stuff I took with me in a brown bag in my pcket three times to
work this week and dumped handfuls where needed so I wouldn't slide twice.
Great stuff.

2010-02-19 Thread Bob Kennedy
They suggest R30 in the attic here too but that's to keep the air conditioning
in the house during the summer. Thank God there is not enough snow to worry
about any longer. Those years in Buffalo still bring bad memories now and
then...

Hi everyone,

I grew up in northern Wisconsin. We were always told that if you have
icicles it means you do not have enough insulation in the attic. When the
sun melts snow from the top the water runs off the top. If you have ice dams
and icicles this means melt from the underside. This can only happen from
heat coming up from the rooms below.

Certainly there are a few exceptions to this situation, but I suggest you
find out how much insulation you have. We now live in st. Louis. Both here
and up north they suggest an R30 or above for the attic.

When we get out of the recession, get a rubber roof; and one for me too,

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Fwd: Speaking of icicles!!

2010-02-19 Thread Dave Andrus
Hi everyone,

I grew up in northern Wisconsin. We were always told that if you have
icicles it means you do not have enough insulation in the attic. When the
sun melts snow from the top the water runs off the top. If you have ice dams
and icicles this means melt from the underside. This can only happen from
heat coming up from the rooms below.

Certainly there are a few exceptions to this situation, but I suggest you
find out how much insulation you have. We now live in st. Louis. Both here
and up north they suggest an R30 or above for the attic.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Fwd: Speaking of icicles!!

2010-02-19 Thread Dale Leavens
Sometimes what you are finding is from condensation on the under side of the
roof deck. When it is cold, moisture from inside the heated space escaping up
into the attic space condenses on the cold under side of the roof deck. It
freezes there and the ice builds up on the under side of the roof deck. when
things warm up the ice melts and the water falls soaking any ceiling insulation
until it begins dripping through.

We have had many discussions here on the various merits of attic ventilation
and of course vapour barriers. Tings like light junction boxes are quite large
ports for escaping moisture and it is why things like bathroom fans should not
vent directly into attic spaces.

2010-02-19 Thread Dale Leavens
The sportster line of radio are really quite blind friendly, not all features
but the little remote makes some of the less accessible features better too.
There may be others but I haven't seen them.

As far as I know none of them have accessible screen information, things like
what is playing and what it is playing.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.

2010-02-19 Thread Dale Leavens
Too bad Sophie is too young to enjoy the fun in the snow with her dad.

The concern about icicles of course is that it represents heat loss to the
under side of the roof decking. This causes the melting which is reversed when
the water passes the warm edge into the cold over the eve.

With the warming the snow will be getting wet and heavy. Sometimes it is
desirable to spray your shovel or scraper with a lubricant like Pam or WD40. I
like to use hard paste wax so that the snow doesn't stick. I am sure your
neighbours will be pleased to have the walks well cleaned. I just hired a chap
with a small Kubota tractor with a blower on the back and a small blade on the
front to keep our big double drive clear for the rest of the season. Not that
we are having a lot of snow so far but it seems to be coming about daily and I
am losing interest in spending that much time on the tail end of my 30 inch
scraper. I'll go out tomorrow and clear the patio.

  Dale,

I do have icicles on the roof, and have been knocking them down every
couple of days. So I don't have the really impressive icicles like some
of my neighbors. It is pretty warm out today, so I think a big part of
the problem will go away. I had to take a half day off today, and work
from home the other half of the day. It was so nice and sunny and warm
out that I dug out my neighbors car, and scraped all the sidewalks down
to the cement from the main stairs to my house.

Then, for good measure, I built a snowman, decorating him with the typical
carrot for a nose, but used an old set of my prosthetic eyes, and a joke
  pacifier that has teeth.

According to the comments from FaceBook, it is kind of creepy looking.

Andy

I poked around the Serious Brand site and have an idea of current rates but

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.

2010-02-19 Thread Lenny McHugh
The ice melt that I use is called majestic. It also is safe for pets, kids,
lawns and carpets. I purchased mine at Lowes for $15 for a 50 pound bag.

insurance companies are slow to cover a residence with a flat roof for
theis reason.
Professional ice melt is quoted down to -12 but I think it's more
accurately trusted to 0.
I tossed some onto my auning and there are no icycles after the first
day. Don't know what ths aalts will do to your structures, but the Ice
Melt (mcmater Carr supply) is safe for lawns, pets, and sidewalks.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.

2010-02-19 Thread Dan Rossi

[BlindHandyMan] drill bit extender

2010-02-19 Thread Lenny McHugh
Many years ago I had a friend that had a small machine shop. He made a set
of bit extenders that made all of his bits the same length. He did this for
precision step drilling. I remember him trying to find a set of same-length
bits. I wonder if these are now made commercially? The ones that Chet made
were sold at a public sale after his death. Wish that I could have got my
hands on them. I remember watching him drill some 1/2 inch holes in boiler
plate. He used 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 then the 1/2 inch bits. He inserted each bit
into the chuck until it bottomed out. There was more than one occasion where
I could have used a product like that.
