Dawn breaks down the skunk oils more rapidly. Andy

When my dog got sprayed my vet recommended a mixture of two cups hydrogen
peroxide (the regular three percent, not the one used for bleaching), a half
cup of baking soda, and two tablespoons of dish soap. Unfortunately I got
this invaluable advice the next morning since the little dear had the bad
taste to get sprayed in the middle of the night, however, I have spoken with
many people who used a version of this since and they swear by it. I don't
see why it couldn't be applied to clothing or anything else that was touched
by the spray.

My reflex was to grab for the baking soda which did take care of the bit
that had dripped on the carpet.

However, even better I have since discovered Arm Hammer's Washing Soda!
It isn't the same as baking soda, and its getting harder to find but is
often available in the laundry section of the store. Its a large box of
powder and there is absolutely nothing like it for dealing with unpleasant
odours. You can use it in many different ways, not just in the washer. It
eats protein so can't be used on wool that's the only thing to be aware of
when using it. A few vital boxes helped me get through a very bad (long)
cat illness a year or so ago when he wasn't able to control his bladder, ...
and if you've smelt cat urine then you can appreciate how special Washing
Soda really is!

Best of luck to your daughter, ... not an ideal way to start the week!

Joy

roof-lines. Anywhere from hooking up a hose to the hot water tap and
strapping the hose to a long pipe. To dumping calcium chloride in a few
 key spots.

I personally know three people who have already had major ceiling damage
caused by ice dams on their roofs.

There are some pretty serious icicles hanging off the buildings around
campus. Apparently, one building has icicles that grew curved due to
 some
strong wind funneling in the area. My buddy says they are about 8 to 10
feet long and curved so they look like a long row of pretty serious
 teeth.

Oh well. Guess I'll just go out with a shovel over the weekend and hack

RE: [BlindHandyMan] drain cleaners

2010-01-02 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, I remember a landlord of mine in the past had a gallon jug of this
extremely strong liquid drain cleaner. You get it at the plumbing supply
store and now available at Lows or Home Depot. You pour some down the drain
and wait about 5 minutes and then the clog pushes up like a geyser. The
pressure of the chemical reaction is quite impressive. I wouldn't use it
pvc piping only in metal pipes that are not too too old. Andy

[BlindHandyMan] black and Decker vac combo

2009-11-15 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, there was an info mercial last Sunday on a tri-vac with 12volt. Suppose
to be able to vac stairs and blow leaves and with a push of a button, vac
the leaves into a bag while mulching. It costs $104.00 with shipping and
was wondering if anyone else heard this and what you think.
Do you know of a good blower-vac that is easy to use without sight? Thanks
for any support and advice. Andy

`I have both, and aside from the difference in accuracy, what you're mainly
going to use the thing for wil probably determine which you should buy. The
click rule is accurate to 1/16 inch, whereas the rotomatic is accurac\te
down to 1.64 inch and more if you like to estimate. If you're going to be
measuring a lot, then the click rule is quicker and easier. If you need
1/64 accuracy or are going to use the tool like a measuring gauge say for
cutting or drilling, then probably the
rotomatic is what you want.
both are very nice and well-thought-out tools though.

can't remember the info shared concerning the rotomatic.
Anyone got an opinion or experience to share?
 Never seen one myself.

with the long pole attached to the triangle assory which filters to the

Andy, we have a 33 foot above above ground pool . I , like you found
a problem in getting that last bit of debris out and still do at
times and I'll tell you why. as your pool water blows back in and
moves things around the last of the silt and debris usually ends up
dead center of the pool . What I use most of the time before the
automatic vac is the bigger vac which is hooked to a three stage
pole extender and just move in and out as far as the pole will go
with this pole fully extended. all from standing outside.. then if the
water is warm enough I later get inside the pool at the pool stairs
and then use the vac from that position. finally I just turn the
automatic loose. I totally agree . early on one needs to have someone at
the pool pump as the pressure quickly rises u0p.. Also note if you are
using a D E filter system you only need to use half the earth while
doing this heavy vac work. good luck. we just yesterday opened up and
the pool is still filling. the last 6 inches. Lee

Hi,
I'm not with Verizon, but I'm using the Motorola Q9c.
I'll admit the small qwerty keyboard scared me at first, but it is doable.
I'm slow, but I'm learning to send text messages and e-mails with it.
On the other hand, if you only want to talk on your phone, you might be able
to do just fine with one of the LG phones that have some speech stuff built
in, without the expense of going to a smart phone.
You might need some help entering contacts, but after that, some of the
digit dial or name dial features work well on some phones. But not all work
equally well. Check them out first if you can, before you buy.
Blessings,
Tom

  Hi All,

I have just learned that the new phone by Verizon that has the TALKS
program
installed is listed as either a PDA or Smart Phone. It has a Qwerty
keyboard and the buttons are very small too say the least. I learned of
the
keyboard layout from a friend that can see, not from anything I read on
the
Verizon website. This might work for someone with low vision but, for the
totally blind this is an attempt to make an inaccessible phone accessible.
I know other companies offer cell phones with screen reading programs but,
I
would prefer to stay with Verizon because of poor service in our area with
other providers. I just wanted to let anyone know that is looking to
purchase the Verizon Motorola Q 9c TALKS phone what they are in for.
Again,
nowhere in my reading did I read anything about this particular phone
using
a Qwerty keyboard. I'll just have to stick with my LG4650 until something
comes along that works as a totally accessible phone without camera, video
recorder, internet service, and all that other crap that I will never use.
Whatever happened to just getting a functional cell phone? Long winded
but,
  done! Take care.
  Mike

RE: [BlindHandyMan] carpet cleaning question

2009-02-18 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
I have the Shark steam mop, it is not all what it is stated to be. You can
check them out at Target for less money. If you do use one, make sure to
change the pads often. The pads become soiled quickly. As far as for the
carpets, the steam mop is not and I mean not sufficient. Don't waste your
money like I did. Andy
p.s. the best way to clean a carpet is to use a steam cleaning machine with
the best suction you can get. The foam and other methods are not as good.
I have been doing this for years, used just about every machine out there,
used a Kirby, Electro Lux, Orrek, Meiler, Hoover and a few more. the best
vac (just for your info) is the Dysin, they have the best customer service
personnel and the best beater bar and no bags. I honestly swear by this
vac. Andy

On the infomercials, they market a steam mop, which is said to be able to
clean carpets just with
steam. What they don't say is what happens to the steam. It must condense
as water and I visualize
it pouring down the walls and windows. It seems to me that one would need
to have a dehumidifier if

It shouldn't be all that difficult for most provided you can sort of mark
out the area in sections
and work over each thoroughly.

You won't know if you have removed a particular stain of course but at that,
often sighted people
can't tell until the carpet is fully dry.

There are different techniques and different equipment..

Several years ago I rented a machine from our local hardware store. They
sell the shampoo to go with
it and you are well advised to use it although it is rather expensive by
comparison to many
alternatives. Proper carpet shampoo or detergent is formulated to
crystallize when it dries so it
can be vacuumed up. Other form of detergent have molecules with an affinity
for water on one end and
for oils on the other end. The stuff you use in your hair for example or for
washing your dishes. By
diluting the detergent with water, the process of rinsing you remove the
suds and the dirt with it.
You can't reasonably rinse out your carpet so, you want a detergent which
will stick to the dirt but
rather than stick to water it should release from the water as it dries and
evaporates while
retaining oils and dirt.

So much for the chemistry.

The machine I rented had, as I recall two large canisters, one heated and a
pump and a vacuum. The
wand had a narrow slotted business end with a trigger. You put the detergent
and water in the heated
jar, let it get really hot then pressing the trigger you work the shampoo
and hot water into the
carpet by pushing and pulling the wand back and forth much as you would with
a vacuum cleaner. Once
you have scrubbed the carpet and worked the soap into it you then turn on
the vacuum and suck the
water and muck back into the second canister. Apparently it is quite
remarkable just how black the
water returned to the second canister is.

Here is another reason for using the correct sort of detergent. Someone had
used one of those
foaming carpet spot removers in an area near where the television would be,
I expect a child
probably spilled something there or puked or something. When the hot water
hit it it foamed up all
over again and those bubbles soon filled the bucket. Took many many passes
to get water coming up
clear over that area of about three square feet.

You won't get the carpet fully dry but by the next day it was and any
residual detergent apparently
gets sucked up with subsequent regular dry vacuuming.

There are other machines, a device something like a floor polisher with
revolving pads which
apparently work shampoo into the carpet before sucking back up with a
separate vacuum.Personally I
have never used that system but a landlord had one and used it in the first
apartment we rented when
we first arrived here decades ago.

So, provided you can be fairly confident of working over the entire area in
a more or less
consistent way and are able to dump the full containers of filthy water down
the toilet I don't see
what the problem would be for a blind person to shampoo a carpet.

Hi, just read your post here. I had 2 electro luxes, an orrac, a kirby and

can't go wrong. Also, the beater bar is great. The customer service is the
best that I have ever worked with. They know everything about their product

claudia,
I know you have a household to run and a child. I definitely understand
the need for speed. But if you can, sometimes take your time to go slowly
with the Oreck.
I find that slow even changes the feel of the carpet back to a nice
fluffier state. Almost that of the Electrolux.
And, for hardly any money that canister side kick is nice.
It, haha uses electrolux bags; I swap them.
I don't really like the blet mechanism of the Oreck. I'd rather a gear
drive with a slip, and an switch for neutral. The smell of burning belts
when it eats a sock is nasty. heehee
BTW stick with the oreck bags, they are a tighter weave than the off brand
which breathe too much and start to stink (dog hair and dander) before
they are filled. Then ya have to change the bag and wash the cloth outer
bag.
Oh and lastly, watch out for fibers or strings getting between the roller
and the housing underneath. It will start to make a higher pitched sound,
and then start to smell of belt as if you ate a sock. But no sock. Taking
off the roller and unwrapping strings or carpet fibers is the only answer.
P.I.A. if you ask me.

do you have a shooting shop near you? Yeah, I mean a gun shop.
I suggest that you go in, and ask for the cheapest shooting headphones
you
can get. I don't find the Oreck louder than all, a bit louder than the
ElectroLux. But when I'm running my router, i am happy happy happy to
have
   an extra set of
   *noise *cancelling *ear *protection!
I can't run the router for more than 5 mins without wanting to jump out

nothing bigger than a .32 or it would shorten the fun.
I think that *that will do you better than ear plugs.
There are even expensive Noise Cancelling Cans that allow a great bit
of
sound through. but they are cancelling rapid rise audio like a sudden
sound level rise (as ehn you fire a gun) and will eventually flatten
out
on a vac; which may bring through more than you want and spend more
than
   you want on it.
Being blind, you'll have to do the vacuuming with no one around as it
will
mess with your spacial a tiny bit and your startle component will go

The cheapest might do you quite well.
The other answer would be cancellation headphones like used in mix
down

of

But the shooting headphones do well limit noise and let some through,

There are sprays for flying insects. I just had lots of fruit flies and got
rid of them with home made traps. Take some balsamic vinegar and put it
into a bowl. Take saran wrap and tighly place it over the bowl. punch tiny
holes within the middle of the wrap and watch the flies climb into the trap.
It may take an hour or so before they are attracted to the trap. Good luck.

As has been said a plunger is about all ther is unless you
can manage a snake which never works for me.
Remember though that the plunger's job is just to jiggle things till they
loosen. It is not intended to push the blockage through, it's
more to back it up a bit and let water pass it to hopefully
break it up.
You need some water above the plunger, but not so much as to cause slop when
you work the plunger up and down. Not too much force on the plunger,
more persistance tnan violence. Sometimes it can take several sessions
over a few hours. The plungers with an extra
funnell like extension that looks like it'll fit into the
opening seem to do better.

I've also heard that hot water may help, if water is passing through at all.

Yeah, I got a pretty powerful machine that was able to grab the carpet
in our living room and lift it up. I remember when I got the machine
and how it smelled really weird the first few times I used it. Smelled
like it was burning wood or some odd smell, but never have had any
problems with the bugger. It's kind of neat to hear things fly up the
hose, bounce off the shield in there and land in the bucket. What a
great machine and it does a great job removing water. Gee, I need to
go check and see who makes this technological marvel.

I never thought that I would complain about a shop vac being too
 powerful.
 I
just decided to take it out to clean the dog hair and some sand
 from the
beach. I first put the small floor attachment and it pulled up the
 carpet.
To vacuum I had to only use the hose and hold it on an angle. so
 it would
not stick to the floor Then took it to the front porch to clean that
 carpet
and had a similar problem where the floor attachment would not
 move. For
 the
porch we usually use the house cleaner but occasionally I do take
 the
 shop
vac out. I think I will look for another floor attachment and
 drill some
small holes to decrease the suction on the floor..

I actually saw one of these at Home Depot and the only concern I had
is if you have a great deal of snow, if this would pose any issues. I
also found something called Gutterbrush http://www.gutterbrush.com
which looks like a great big bottle brush. It seems to not allow any
small stuff in, but the water. I haven't totally decided if this is a
real option or not, but they will send you a sample. I got the sample
and it seems it would work, but the only way to know is to do an
entire gutter and see how it wokrs. Now the brush is kind of expensive
and I can't recall how much since it's been a couple of years since I
check into it.
Thanks for the info.

Oh, I neglected to mention the one I saw at Home Depot you trimmed
some off if necessary, but a bit of it slipped up under the bottom row
of shingles and then sort of clipped to the edge of the gutter.

Gutter Guard is the best solution I know. Short of the wife... There
are several different versions going by different names. The best
I've found snaps inside the gutter and it looks like the water will
run across the top of the guard and right on off the roof. But it
actually lets the junk fall off and the water does end up in the
gutter. I saw a guy demonstrating them once and he had gutters on a
dog house for his demo house. He used a fountain pump and just
recirculated the water the pump sent the water out at the peak and
it ran down and across these gutter guards and once it got to the
rounded edge, it looped over and actually followed the reverse slope
until it dropped off and into the gutter.

This brand is all vinyl and as you look at it you will see it sits
above the gutter. Don't confuse it with the other styles that have
screens that snap in the gutter, they don't work. The junk piles up
on the screen and forms a blockage outside the gutter.

These are available at Lowes and Home Depot I know so should be
available at any home center... I forget the price right now I'll
try to check next time I'm at Lowes with a clear mind so it might be
a while. I'm at Lowes a lot the clear mind is a problem though...

Hi, can some of you give me opinions on leaf blowers? I have a rather large
driveway and a rather large yard. I am thinking that with a blower, kind of
one that is like a back pack, would be something to look at. Also, Home Depot
has one for $299.00 and it is a 44cc engine. What does that equal to as far
as horse power... Can you also throw in recommended brands? Thanks so ever
much. Andy..
