Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Gas Grill!

2010-08-30 Thread Bill Benson
Dear Claudia,

It's very doable. We have had one for forty years, and the biggest problem has
been with them wearing out eventually. If you can afford a Weber or other
comparably priced higher of the line one, I think it would be a great
investment, twelve months a year.

  Hi,

The honey I, being both totally blind, want to know how easy or difficult
it is to use a gas outdoor grill?
We're both pretty confident cookds, but something just scares me about the
whole gas thing!
I guess I'd like to know how doable it is?
  Thanks.

Aloha Matt,
They still make braillables which are those sticky backed sheets, but
when the backing is removed, they aren't as durable as the thin
thermoform paper. However, I do have some heavy clear plastic
material that I use to make covers for the documents that my company
produces. I buy them from a company called
Southwest Plastics, but if all you want is 25 or so of them, I have
some that have 1 line of braille on them that were errors. They
  measure 8-1/2 by 11, or 9 by 11.
They are all 19 hole punched along one long side. I use a paper
cutter to make 3 by 5 and 4 by 6 cards for addresses and the like
that I really want to keep, but I have more than I need.
I use a good-old-fashioned braille writer to braille them.

Thermoform paper rips too easy for my liking.
Do they still have the old sticky plastic paper, which used to come

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Gutter Guard-type Systems

2009-10-05 Thread Bill Benson
We have had a Leaf Guard system for several years and are quite happy with it.
Our roofer said it was a better system than the Gutter Guard from the
standpoint of the shingles. He said that shingles could be replaced much
easier if need be with the Leaf Guard than with the Gutter Guard system.

All,

They had a Main Street fair here the other day and there were a
number of vendors selling all sorts of stuff. There were two vendors
selling gutter guard-type systems; one being the Gutter Helmet and the
other I can't recall the name, but it was interesting. I mention all
of this because I've been considering various options and I've tried
one that seems to work, but I have not really decided if I like it
  entirely or not.
The Gutter Helmet is the type of system where the water runs down the
surface and roles under the end and drops into the gutter. The
competition claims you can still get the little bits and such in the
gutter and yes I am sure that's true, but I'm also sure water that
does come into the gutter will wash the junk out. The second system
was rather interesting in that you have a flat surface on the gutter
so nothing slips under the shingle as it does with the helmet type
systems. What made this other system different is that the plate that
covers the gutter has holes for the water to drop through, but in
addition it has a 50 micron screen that won't even let the sandy stuff
from the shingles pass. I asked the lady how would any stuff that
would collect on top of the gutter be cleared off and she said the
wind would take care of that. Okay well all this stuff sounds good,
but then the other option out there is the GUtter Brush which is just
that, a great big bottle brush that fits inside the gutter and it
looks like a bottle brush. I did get a sample of this and it seems to
work quite well. I did find a lot of really small stuff along with the
larger stuff backed up behind the sample. I only had a short piece so
put it closest to the down spout to see what collected. The only way
to know for sure is to purchase enough to fill an entire gutter and
see how it works. So, the point of all this is to see if anyone has
had experience with any of these systems and if they felt they were
worth the investment. Our gutters seem to primarily collect pine
needles from neighbors and junk from the roof. We don't seem to get a
lot of large leaves or as far as I know wasps and such living in
there, but you can bet they aren't welcome and need to stay away as
  well.

  tnx,

  Hi,

Thanks for the great info shared on the MP3 players. I did purchase the
Muvo T100 and it is very cool. I like it. It was mentioned here that
it is possible to listen to pod casts and the device would keep your
place when exiting a file. When I change folders or move on to music
then return to the pod cast, it starts at the beginning of the file
again. Do I need to press a button to mark my spot or something?

Creative has on their web site a wrist band or key chain with a speaker
on it. Has anyone used one of these? If so, would you mind commenting
on how it is working for you? It is needed for a student who will not
  be the most careful.

Thanks again for all the feedback,

Hi,

Wish I had an answer, but unfortunately I only have another question that I
hope someone out there may have an answer to: I have a DVD which skips and
plays stuttering in a Zenith DVD player, but when I put it in my computer it
played fine. That makes me think that it isn't that the disk is dirty or
anything, but wonder if the inside workings of the Zenith could be dirty. Is
there something that will clean that up in the way that there waws a cassette
you could run through your player to demagnetize and clean it?

Thanks for any tips.

Last weekend I bought a home entertainment center, what a pain in the
arse that was hooking up using my wife's sighted help. It took us near 8
hours by the time it was finished. We did run into some problems along the
way. Like my RF Modulator was burned out or whatever prevented it from
working. So I assume my DVD player was not broken which gave me the
idea to go and buy a Home entertainment Center in the first place. After
installing and hooking up the RF modulator we tried the system out.
Everything worked fine till we got to the DVD player, and that's when we
encountered another problem. We stuck a disk in the DVD and it started
loading and something when afoul. I received a message on the display
stating protected. So I called support and they told me That I'd have to
take the receiver back and exchange it, so we took it back and they did the
exchange, plus had to retrieve our DVD disk that was still stuck in the
first one that we couldn't get out because the receiver locked everything up
when we got the protected message.
Okay, here is a question I have. The unit came with a antenna with about 3
feet of wire. You connected the antenna to one of those coaxial cables
connectors, the same size that your cable TV cable is.. This antenna does
not receive very well. Is there a FM coaxial cable antenna that I can buy
that will give me better reception?

  curtis,
so far as I know this is how it will go.
Soon, as soon as converter boxes are available, some part of the federal gov
will make cupons available to every citizen, that will provide about $30 or
$40
towards the price of a convverter box that will take digital T.V. signals
and produce either NTSC video signals or R.F. (As in chanel 3 etc.) that will
go directly into an analog T.V.

How accessible the converter boxes and there probable
remotes might be is your guess.

How ever it appears that, although you'll have to buy either
a converter box or an actual digital T.V. the converters or
basic ones anyhow will end up not costing more than $20.00 or $30.00

Do not buy one now, the cupons aren't out yet, and the current converters
aren't as good as the newer ones will be.

You won't have to change antennas as the digital chanels are in the
same ranges, mostly U.H.F. as the analog. One friend
said he got poor analog pictures and after getting a digital tuner, got
  crystal clear pictures.

the must go digital date is February 17, 2009.

  Hi Bill,

I have seen such interrupter cords at Home depot.

You may also want to check out Lowes and/or electrical supply stores in your
area, as their prices may be drastically thinner than Home Depot, but that's
just my opinion, based on Canadian facts. Smile.
