[BlindHandyMan] replacing a ice maker in a fridge

2007-08-02 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

Could someone tell me if it's possible to replace a ice maker that's in a
refrigerator? If so, would it be possible for a blind person to do
themselves? I need to get another one but I'm not if I should get the same
kind or not because I want one that makes smaller ice cubes. Will I be able
to do this or will I have to get the same one like the one that's in there?

RE: [BlindHandyMan] sewer problem

2007-08-25 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

I'm also running into the exact same problem. I use to have a big tree in
front of my house and a big one at the back of my house. I had them both
cut down but there's a big stump still sitting at the front which they
wouldn't touch because they said that it's to close to my house. So what
we're doing is killing the stump and digging it out ourselves. We're just
going to get the stump as low as we can get it and try to contact a
contractor to remove the rest and rebuild the dirt under there. That tree
roots was pushing my basement wall in at one time but when we bought the
house we had the seller pay for some still beams to be put in to keep that
wall from moving again.. When we called the city, they told us that there
was some branches sitting down by the main street and our street that's
causing the floods. Believe it or not they told us to poor some bleach down
in all of the sinks, tub, shower and the sewer drain every once in a while
to keep it clean. Now we only gets floods when we have a really big storm.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] sewer problem

When I first bought the house, the sewer had a backup. Called the city and
had them clean out their side, but the problem persisted. Had to call the
plumber and pay about $95 to have them clean the system. Now, 3 months
later, the backup is back. Both times, the sewer backs up into the shower.
Both toilets are clogged. The weird part is that the sinks are not clogged.
I don't want to have to call the plumber every 3 months to have them clean
the system, but if that's the best thing to do, I will. I want to know what
could be causing the clog in the first place and how to prevent it. I do
have trees in both the front and back yard. This includes a sago palm which
is practically against the front of the house. One other thing about this
clog. If you wait a while, the water in the shower goes away. If you wait
long enough, you can flush the toilet a few times before the water returns.
I'm thinking about getting a snake so I can atempt to clear the line. Any
thoughts or suggestions on this are appreciated.

Hi Lenny,

Wayfinder does the same only it gets updates from the internet through the
cell phone connection. There is a mode for navigating in an automobile as
well as on foot. My phone does Web, e-mail though I haven't yet figured that
out, I play my Woodworking for the Blind magazines on it and could play
music, there is a voice recorder, a note taker and I have a bluetooth
keyboard about the size of a pack of cigarettes when folded up, there is a
calculator and Adobe reader, Excel and a Word document reader and I am not
sure what all else and it fits in my shirt pocket. I don't know yet how well
I will be able to manipulate some of the controls once we get into real
winter conditions, there was four or five inches of snow on the ground when
I left this morning but I expect it will be pretty well gone by the morning.

The GPS software is about $400 and the recommended matchbox sized bluetooth
GPS receiver something like a hundred and fifty of course on top of the
phone and talking software.

So far though I don't know anyone using the system here in North America. I
did experience the standard version in a taxi in England this spring and I
was very impressed. Apparently it covers most of Europe very completely and
in England at least even includes the location of speed traps and cameras.
The British version has 20 million POIs (points of interest). I rather doubt
there is particularly detailed information for more remote locations like
this and we also have some holes in our cellular service which apparently
can cause it some confusion when attempting to recalculate a route if you
leave off of the originally plotted one. I am trying to discover if you can
resolve this by having adjoining maps pre-loaded but don't think I have been
able to describe what it means to have holes in cell service, people don't
seem to believe the entire globe is not dotted with towers.

Dale, I am not sure about way finder. One nice feature that trekker has is
the ability to map out a course either pedestrian or mobile. A few months
ago I wanted to visit a friends parents to drop off something. All I had was
the address. I was in the car and not near a computer to get a map. I just
entered the address and we had turn by turn instructions right to the door.
When walking down the street I learned about a Mac machine that I did not
know existed. Trekker told me about it as I passed. Also with Trekker you
can search for a point of interest and then create a talking map to it. Also
you can create a poi like my dentist office with some instructions how to
get into the office. If you have the maestro option you can take notes, read
books or listen to music.
I had no desire to do that however if I were still working I definitely
would have that option. These are a few highlights.

Sorry Tunecollector , I don't know your real name or maybe I forgot it.

There are quite a number of suitable cell phones for the purpose most made by
Nokia. They must be Symbion based which is the operating system for the
computer in the phone. I think they must be the series 60 phones and the most
recent are known as third generation. many of the older second generation
phones will also work. There are probably two dozen models out there. You will
also have to buy the talking software so you can access all of the features of
the phone. There are two primary software authors, Talks and MobileSpeak. This
is analogous to Jaws and WindowEyes I suppose although the functionality is
probably closer. MobileSpeak also runs on some Windows Mobile phones but
Wayfinder does not.

You can spend between probably a hundred and fifty bucks maybe a little more
for a phone up to probably a thousand bucks for something with a really
sophisticated camera in it. I just forget what the Talks software costs.

The principle I really like is the use of mainstream essentially off the shelf
hardware and software. I have never agreed with the proprietary approach like
Daisy players you have to return to the vendor to have batteries changed. I
freely admit this is a personal prejudice. I dislike those braille notetakers
and things like PacMate for similar reasons, in many ways they turn out to be
expensive and isolating technologies.

I can't think of any good reason why a GPS my neighbour buys for a couple of
hundred bucks at the local Canadian Tire or Wal-mart store needs to cost me
sixteen hundred bucks for similar functionality. They both use the same
receiver which costs between 60 and a hundred bucks depending on the model..

A navigator that facilitates the everyday life of the visually impaired.

When using Wayfinder Access navigation software, a wireless GPS receiver and a
symbian enabled mobile phone we can bring you full freedom without the expense
of a bulky package. PDA's are a very good business tool, however whilst walking
or traveling you need something much more convenient that can be carried in
your pocket. The mobile phone has become something we have all built our lives
around and is the one item you would never leave home without, so why not leave
your note taker behind and appear more natural, but at the same time be able to
plan routes and know exactly where you are?

Wayfinder, one of the Worlds most prominent satellite navigation software
solution providers have partnered with the visually impaired community to
produce Wayfinder Access. The worlds first bespoke navigation solution built
specifically with the user group in mind, but importantly that works on a
mobile phone and not a PDA. It boasts many impressive features primarily though
the fact that it has been designed for the community user group in mind is

Wayfinder Access comprises all the features that you would expect from a

Hi,

This is a 1998 Buick Century. The latch in side of the car is just a handle
that you pull to pop the hood. My step father just went out there and used
a screw driver to pull the latch that locks the hood to the side and the
hood popped open. But the handle that's in side of the car still feels like
it's kind of hard to pull.

Hi everyone,

Well I just ran into a problem with my car. The hood of my car is frozen
stuck and I can't get it open. Do anyone have any ideas on what I can do to
unfreeze it? When I pull the handle that pops the hood, it seems that it's
hard to pull. I was told by someone else once I get it open, spray some
WD40 on the latch part that catches to the frame of the car. All
suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi,

We had the road side assistant people do that yesterday. He pounded on the

Hi Otis,

Try tapping the front of the hood where the area of the latch would be with
the palm of your hand,

This will sometimes dislodge the latch and allow for it to pop.

Don't be afraid to use some force on it, as it might take some force to
break what ever is keeping the latch from unsticking.

The problem is that you don't know if it's frozen or if it's rusted .

Either way, that tapping should be able to release it enough that it'll pop.

If you find that it won't budge, even after you've pounded it several times,

try taking a blow dryer on it's hottest setting to the front of the hood,
followed by some well pointed hot air through the front grill, aiming in an
upward direction to see if you can release it.

Another option is using a key de-icer on it.

You can get these at any service station or hardware store.

They often come with a small straw that you can insert in the groove where
the latch is.

Spray a liberal amount of the de-icer into the space with the straw and if
it is frozen, this should work to melt it.

If this doesn't work, try the WD-40 option spraying a liberal amount into
the groove.

Hope this helps.

Victor

Hi,

Yes it's below 0 here. I think the latch or the cable to help pop the hood
is frozen. There's no rust. It probably need oiling also.

Are you in a part of the country where the frozen condition
is a result of cold temperatures and moisture or is your
frozen condition a result of rust and corrosion?
Year, make model and approximate mileage would also be
helpful. Does the hood open from the front by the headlights
or from the rear by the windshield?

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-04 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

I rather have this product because your manual can't tell you why your check
engine light is on. There's a lot of crooked auto shops out here you can't
trust any of them. My car has been in the shop for about a week in a half.
I had a head gasket changed and that only took one day but I'm having more
problems now then when my car went into that shop. The engine light is on
and they're trying to tell me once they do a tune up the light will go off.
They did a tune up when they changed the head gasket. There were coolant
getting into my oil so that's why I had to get that work done.

I am not familiar with the OBD II equipment. For car problems a good
digital multimeter allong with some code reader will get you goiing on a lot
of problems. There appers to be two levels of code readers. There is a low
end one that goes around here for about $50 bucks and the top of the line
for $200 to $300 that does of course more. Other than that a service manual
for your perticular car will also help.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-05 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

Other symptoms I see is when driving my father tells me that the car shakes
and rattles when stopping at a light or something. And The car still over
heats. Those are the only things I see. The only time I think the battery
was disconnected was when they did the head gaskets. I can give that a try.
When he says a tune up he means changing the oil again just in case some
left over coolant was still getting into the oil. They need to put my
original spark plugs that I purchase into my car because they're the only
one that the manufacture suggest to use with the car. They supposedly put
double platinum spark plugs in there and I think that's what making my car
shake and rattle when ever we stop at a light. I need those AC Delco's
because that's all I ever put in my car. I also notice that I need to
change my main belt because it's a little worn. This is a 1998 Buick
Century.

Are you havingg other symptems with your car besides just the fact that your
check engine light is coming on?
If so what are they?
As far as the check engine light is concerned, the first thing to find out
is was the battery ever disconectedl. If not then you need to disconnect the
battery for at least 3 minutes. This will reset the computer. What do they
mean by a tune up?
I have not worked on the new cars but to my understanding a basic tune up is
usually plugs and wires.
You may do things like air filter, PCV valve but out side of that the
computer is constantly adjusting thbings like air fuel mixture, Timing and
what else I am not sure.
What kind of car is this and what year is it?

Hi,

Well I no for sure that I need these spark plugs because every time I put
something else in there I get something weird wrong with my car. I read a
form on line that state this and that's why I have been using them every
since. This is what the manufacture put in the car when it comes from the
factory. Before they put those spark plugs in my car I couldn't even tell
if my car was running. Now I can tell for sure. I'm sure it's not the gas
because I'm using a well known gas station which is not owned by forners

Not sure about them, but do know they got accessible software for laptops.
All you need is connections for type of car. The software ain't cheap by no
means, and have thought about getting it, but not doing those kind of
repairs anymore.
On some cars if you take the keys and turn them all the way on then back to
accessories position. The car starts to beep a code out. This code can be
found in manual for what beeps mean.
But if your car is shaking at stops. You might want to check the type of gas
cheap crap will do this, or maybe timing. As far as spark plugs go. As long
as they are rated for the car in use they are just fine. Remember with some
name is all your buying.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Accessible OBD-II unit

2006-08-05 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

Like I said before I tried other spark plugs on my car and my car didn't
perform right because I had similar problems that I'm having now. So I do
no that AC Delco works the best for my car. Also there are accessible car
diagnosing machines out there for the visually impaired because a couple of
years ago when I went to this tech collage here in Wisconsin for an
evaluation for adaptive equipment, they gave us a tour around the building
and they had a auto shop where blind people was working on cars and the
instructor was speaking over the phone to someone about another person
trying to come back to the school so that he can get his DVR counselor to
purchase him a diagnostic machine because he need one at a shop that his
family owned. Another person asked was this person was blind and he told us
yes he was and we went on asking how a blind person was able to use a
diagnostic machine with out being able to see. That's just like when we
went into the metal shop they had a CNC pad in braille which I never knew
they had. If I did I would have kept taking that up after I went blind back
in 1995.

The platinum plugs are not your problem. They were overly expensive, but
will work fine. Your car obviously has more serious problems that need to
be properly diagnosed and it is apparent to me that your service persons are
fairly incompetent.

Unfortunately there is no accessible auto service test equipment. You can
buy quality equipment and use a sighted person to tell you what is on the
screen, but you still have to know how to interpret the information.
Nothing beats qualified experience!

Good luck.

  Hi,

Other symptoms I see is when driving my father tells me that the car
shakes
and rattles when stopping at a light or something. And The car still over
heats. Those are the only things I see. The only time I think the battery
was disconnected was when they did the head gaskets. I can give that a
try.
  Century.

Are you havingg other symptems with your car besides just the fact that
your
check engine light is coming on?
  If so what are they?
As far as the check engine light is concerned, the first thing to find out
is was the battery ever disconectedl. If not then you need to disconnect
the
battery for at least 3 minutes. This will reset the computer. What do they
  mean by a tune up?
I have not worked on the new cars but to my understanding a basic tune up
is
  usually plugs and wires.
You may do things like air filter, PCV valve but out side of that the
computer is constantly adjusting thbings like air fuel mixture, Timing and
what else I am not sure.
What kind of car is this and what year is it?

Otis
A couple things to check here.
Yes absolutely put the type plugs in there that you have always used. Oil
change at this point is a good idea.
Make sure that your thermostat is working properly.
Also have them test the temp sending unit.
Your fan is electric so make sure it is coming on when the car gets up to
operating temperature.
You could have a bad fan or a bad sencer.
Also you can not rule out a bad water pump. I would hope that since they had
to drain the radiator that they would have flushed it.
It is a good idea to flush out the fins on the radiator.
You should do this from the back of the radiator with a garden hose. You
might want to do this when the car is cooled down.
sorry to state the obvious but make sure the coolant level is correct and
check for any leaks. and last but not least make sure that the radiator cap
is the proper pressure and is working correctly.
 Hope this helps.
You may want to write down these things and bring them to your mechanic so
you don't forget any thing.

If you have a 3.8 v6 which is likely one common drivability issue with them
is that the motor will oscillate at idle. what I mean is the RPM's will
fluctuate.
If this is the case after every thing else is working properly you should
test the fuel presher regulator is working properly. This is a very simple
test. any mechanic can do.
Let me know how this turns out.

Hi Clifford,

Do you have the model number for that Milwaukee? I actually live
here in Milwaukee Wisconsin and I use to work at the company that
made that screwdriver. It's called Milwaukee Electric Tools
. I probably can get one cheaper there if I knew the model. I want
something that's small to use around the house and something for
everyday use with lot's of power to use in my shop Right now I'm
looking at a bosch/PS10-2 cordless screwdriver if I can find it at lower price.

[BlindHandyMan] CNC machines

2007-01-01 Thread Otis Blue
Hi,

I have a question about using a CNC machine as a blind person. Is it
possible for a blind person to use a CNC machine? I was learning how to use
one of these before I went blind about 12 years ago and I still would like
to continue. I understand you can run one of these from a computer setup.
That's the way I started learning and then I start learning using some type
of touch pad which probably could be labeled. Please let me no if there's
anyone on this list using one of these machines.

Otis
