  Hi All,
On the most recent cd of the woodworking magazines there was article about a
new saw blade. The Fruid (hope that is the spelling) glue line blade. I would
like to give it a try. I just called Lowes and Home Depot and neither sell it.
Sears does not have anything like it.
Any ideas where I can purchase?
Since I just purchased a large pile of cherry and will have to make many glue
joints I think it would help.

I recently purchased a new bench sander. It came with an 80 grit belt. When I
put that belt on the machine it tracked perfectly. I decided to use a 120 grit
belt. I removed the 80 belt and carefully aligned the new one as the old was
installed. The new belt will not track straight. I repositioned it and used the
adjustment knob. After an hour of toying with the thing I came up here. I will
look at it tomorrow if I can get some sighted help. There must be a trick with
this beast.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Two measuring gages or jigs

2007-01-12 Thread Tom Huhn
About ten years ago I made something like these measuring devices out of wood.
I cut two pieces of alder 3/4 x 1 about 5' and 3' and I cut a dove tail slot
down the hole lenght and cut a matching piece to the dove tail slot that slides
in the slot. I put a 't' nut in the 3/4 x 1 with a thumb screw to lock the
slide stick. I use these all the time for taking measurements for cuts and they
work extremely well and very acusrate

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Two measuring gages or jigs

The recent interest in measuring devices on this list prompts me to describe
a couple of types of measuring gages or jigs that I built about 25 years ago,
and that I still use to day. The first was made with a 4 foot length of 3/16
stainless steel rod and 2 pieces of ¾ square steel bar stock about 1 and ¼
long. The idea is to permanently affix one of the pieces of bar stock
perpendicular to one end of the rod, either by gas welding or by threading the
end of the rod and drilling and tapping the bar stock. The other piece of bar
stock is drilled perpendicular to it's long axes, so it can slide smoothly
along the rod. A second hole is drilled in this piece of bar stock parallel to
it's long axes, which intersects the first whole. This second whole is tapped
to accommodate a threaded bolt that acts as a set screw to lock the sliding
square stock at any point along the rod. I used a bolt with a large knurled
head that could be easily tightened or loosened by hand for the locking bolt.
To use this device, I align the end of the rod with the fixed block at one end
of the measurement to be taken, and slide and tighten the movable block at the
other end of the piece or gap to be measured. I then can transfer this
measurement to a board for cutting or use it to set stop blocks on a chop saw
or set a fence on a table saw. I have found this device to be quick to use and
accurate enough for cabinet work. Over the years I have built several shorter
versions of this device for use in tight areas.

My second home made device has turned out to be especially handy for
installing base boards, door trim, interior studs or wall paneling. It is
primarily made out of wood and it telescopes from 4 to 8 feet in length, and
can be locked at any point between. It is made from a 4 Foot, clear ¾ pine
board about 2 Inches wide. I cut a 3/8 Inch deep by ¾ Inch wide groove down the
center of one of the 2 Inch faces of the board and ripped a 4 Foot strip of
pine to slide smoothly in the groove. I next cut a 4 Foot long by 2 Inch piece
of ¼ plywood and glued and nailed it over the groove in the pine board, to make
a 4 Foot box or sleeve for the pine strip to slide in. I then cut a 2 by 2 Inch
¾ Inch thick pine block and drilled a ¼ whole in its center. Next I temporarily
aligned this block on the plywood side covering the groove at one end of the
device and with the sliding strip removed, I extended the ¼ Inched Whole
through the plywood, into the groove, but not into the pine board at the bottom
of the groove. Next I tightly mortised a ¼ square nut into the face of the 2 by
2 Inch block so it lines up with a threaded bolt inserted through the whole in
the block and is flush with one face of the block. With a ¼ bolt threaded
through the block and nut, and protruding about ½ inch below the nut I inserted
the end of the locking bolt through the plywood side and into the groove below.
I then glued and nailed the block and locking bolt assembly to the plywood side
covering the groove. With the sliding pine strip inserted into the groove the
threaded bolt on the block can be tightened to lock the strip in any position
between 4 and 8 Feet. To use the device I align one of its ends with a wall or
the floor and slide out the strip to make the needed measurement. With the
locking bolt tightened this measurement can then be transferred to a board or
panel for accurate cutting. I don't use this jig often, but it's nice to know
that it is hanging on the shop wall when the need arises.

I think that it has taken me longer to describe this stuff than it took to
build it. Sorry for being so long winded.

  Dale,
I liked your description of using the ruler to set up your miter saw. I
thought that I was the only one who used his chin or cheek to hold down the
saw to align the stock. I don't know how many times my wife made a comment
when she saw me doing that. Now I can tell her that it is the proper way to
  set up the saw.
Great description of the tool and use.

Yes, we cover everything here on the Blind Handy Man List.
Coffins are a great way to spruce up any haunted house or Halloween-themed
party. They are relatively easy to build and provide a wealth of scare
  tactics
that are limited only by the builder's imagination.

  Instructions
. STEP 1: Measure the space you are using and any props or people that need
to fit inside. This will determine the size of your coffin. Most will be
  approximately
7 feet long by 3 feet wide.
. STEP 2: Gather your plywood or cardboard. Measure the materials and cut to
the appropriate lengths. You should have the base and lid be 7 feet by 3
  feet.
Then the long sides be 7 feet long and 3 feet high. The height can be more
or less, depending on who or what is inside. Finally, cut the short sides,
  making
them 3 feet in width, and the height exactly the same as the long sides.
. STEP 3: Attach the sides to the base. If you are using carboard, simply
attach them using lots of duct tape. If you are using plywood, use L
  brackets
on the inside of the coffin. The L brackets will hold the sides onto the base
  with small screws.
. STEP 4: Drill the L brackets onto the base where the sides will meet the
base. Use two for each side or wall. The coffin should resemble a box with
an open top at this point. Now, attach one L bracket to each corner, so you
are attaching one side to another. This will add stability.
. STEP 5: Set your plywood or cardboard lid on top of the coffin.
Determine which side will act as the hinge and which side will open.
. STEP 6: Secure the hinge side. For cardboard, use a good amount of duct
tape, since it will be opening and closing regularly. For plywood, use two
  cabinet
hinges. Attach them on the inside of the coffin. Screw each wing of the
hinge in place, one wing onto the lid, one wing onto the interior side. They
  should
be spaced about 3 feet apart.
. STEP 7: Attach a small piece of scrap wood to to the inside of the coffin
where the lid closes. The wood should be screwed into place, and strong
  enough
to support the weight of the lid. Without this, the lid could just fall into
  the coffin.
. STEP 8: Paint it, usually black, or otherwise weather it to give it a
degree of realism. A broken lid is an opportunity for a scare with a hand
  reaching
  out of it.

  Hi guys.

I have solved a problem which many of us encounter along the way in terms of
plans for projects. I use a remarkable CAD system (turboCAD with scripts for
jaws. also have the advantage of access to a friend of mine's raised plotter
system. it can print on A0 paper and also use thermo plotting for raised
lines etc. its brilliant for me. if this could be more available for everyone
in
the blind community or for those in designing and engineering works then
  great.

  yours

One idea is to take a saw with a masonry blade or a diamond blade and cut a
series of grooves across the stepsto create a perminent grip on the steps and
you would probably want to remove the paint first before cutting the grooves

  HI All,

Although I am not at home I am looking at a job when I do get home.

I have concrete steps going up the front of my house.

They are in an L-shaped formation, with four steps leading up to a landing
made of patio stones, then another 7 steps leading up to the front porch.

  The dilemma...

These concrete steps were painted without my permission by my father-in-law,
go figure, and when there's a bit of snow or wetness from rain or something
else, they get slick as moose dung in the heat.

My job, whether I choose to accept it or not, is to make these steps slip
resistant, especially in the snow.

I thought about using glued strips of rubber or something along those lines,
but I've had bad experiences with glued on things of the step variety, so I'm
wondering if there's an alternative.

One of the few reasons for the bad experiences is that I used different
glues, all with different results, and none of them stuck long enough to last
the entire winter, which only lasts a few months, 4 or so, contrary to popular
beliefs from our friends south of the border.

  Anyway, any suggestions?

If this question gets read on the show, I'm sure Don Patterson will have a
suggestion for me, but as he's from Texas, and snow falls in Texas about as
much as my father-in-law gets my permission to do anything in my house, well,
let's just say they may not know of what I'm talking about, but as they are all
knowing, I have high expectations.

My wife has a Braun coffee bean grinder. I think it makes too much noise. I
find that it tends to bother my ears with the high speed grinding process. I
keep telling her that she should use my hearing protection when she uses it.
Does anyone know of one that is fairly quiet?

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] hello and 3-way switches

  Hello all,

My name as the e-mail header indicates is Scott Howell. I live in
Mount AIry Maryland and have been blind since birth. I have learned a
lot of my handyman activities just by figuring out things on my own
and with a few questions. Can't say everything I've done was pretty,
but I got the job done. I've done lots of plumbing, electrical, and
some other repairs like hanging doors and the like.
I however have a few projects of the electrical variety and one of
those I have to admit I'm not overly sure of.
I have a need to install a 3-way switch arrangement. What I have is a
bathroom where the fools that built this place put the switch clear
on the otherside of the room near a secondary door and not near the
  main door off the hall.
So, my understanding is that I would remove the old switch, I'd need
two 3-way switches, and 3 conductor cable with ground so that makes
four wires total. Now what I'm not overly clear on is how to rig this
up. I understand basic switches to a light fixture in that power
comes into the switch and I'm essentually making a loop from the
fixture back to the switch. Now, I do know a 3-way switch has one
common terminal and two traveler terminals as well as a ground. Now I
also understand that I need to rig things up so that when one switch
is closed, the other is able to break the circuit.
At this point I'm getting fuzzy and not clear how to physically wire
this up. Here's what I think and please any advise would be
  greatfully appreciated.

  1. The light fixture is still wired in a loop configuration like it
would with a regular switch were there, I would hook the hot wire to
the common terminal on the the switch, connect the black wire we'll
call it, now I'd hook a white to the traveler, and maybe the other's
red can't recall, but that would go to the other traveler, and at the
other end of this I'd be hooking up the same wires, black to common,
white to another traveler, and red to the other traveler. Of course
  ground to ground throughout.
Now I'm probably wrong on this, but I figure someone here has done
this and would have some answers and I'd sure appreciate the help.
Now I've been listening to the Blind Handyman show and its just great
  and a valuable service.

  Thanks to all in advance.

  Scott

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] All bungged up!

  Hi,

  Looking for suggestions.

I have a roller which you fill with water or sand for adding weight to roll
out things like the lawn. I released the bung and tried to wiggle it out so I
could get the water out of it in an effort to preserve it's round shape for
next year. The rubber bung is a round rubber plug with a washer on each side
and a bolt which runs through the middle and a wingnut so, when you tighten the
wingnut it pulls the two washers together which thickens the rubber and it fits
water tightly in the hole in the side of the drum.

  Well it wouldn't come out!

I wiggled and jiggled and all it wanted to do was go in which, if it does, I
will never again retrieve.

This would not worry me all that much if a replacement was easily available
but in the past, every time I go to my hardware store they inform me they are
right out of stock as if they had just sold the last one minutes before my
arrival. Not only that but they are expecting more on the next truck on Tuesday
but without fail, some other needy bungger seems to get there before me but I
digress.

So, I put a small prybar on the wingnut musing as I tried wiggling the little
beggar that pulling on the nut was pulling on the bolt which would be pulling
on the washer inside the drum which would be expanding the stopper but I did it
anyway. I was mistaken though, the wingnut was one of those pressed metal
things and it decided to slide off of the threads instead, a consequence I had
not anticipated. The wingnut now reposes probably in my neighbours yard
somewhere over my shed where he will doubtless find it in the spring and wonder
which of his devices it had been liberated from.

I did grab the bolt with a small pair of channel locks so, in some way I
still have hold of the rubber stopper and bolt and at least the inner washer
and I have tried, with this hold to jiggle the rubber out of that hole
including smearing Vaseline over it but, the fit seems to remain too tight.

The hole appears to be maybe an inch and the bolt only a little longer than
required but I am thinking I won't get it out of there unless I just melt it or
burn it with a torch which really isn't useful, might as well leave it to
rattle about inside there.

  Anyway, I thought I would put it out there on the list in case someone has;
Either an idea to try or a source for bungs.

How about this, take two small wire leads and tape them to the dip stick having
them stop at the full mark and attach the other ends to the probes on the
liquid level indicator and when you put the dip stick in the engine and the
ends of the wire leads touch the oil then the indicator would sound it's alarm.
I don't know if this would work but just a thought
