RE: [BlindHandyMan] gorilla glue and metal

2010-07-06 Thread Tony
Eastman 910, which was the predecessor to crazy glue, is what we used to use
for metal to metal bonding. We had to have the surfaces very smooth and
clean but it really held. I understand crazy glue isn't as strong but is
much more forgiving on the preparation.

So this time I had the good sense to Google glue metal to metal, instead of
gorilla glue. I learned that Crazy glue will most likely do the job even
though it is listed as the thrird best choice. Sotering and then a two part
apoxy if you must glue were what the first recommendations were. I think
the Crazy glue will do for my purposes.

Thanks Betsy,

That is all I found too. I just have a pad lock that I want to glue the
screws in so it can not be opened with a screw driver instead of the key for
the padlock. I am open to other suggestions, I just already have the
gorilla glue and wanted it to work without a trip to the store.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] ozone

2010-06-25 Thread Tony
When I worked for the Texas Air
Control Board (state air pollution agency) in the mid 70s the EPA tried to
force Texans to change their driving habits to lower ozone emissions to
"safe levels".

It took years to convince the EPA that if we stopped all transportation,
industry, and moved everyone out of the Houston area
the ozone level would still be too high. The ozone was being produced by
the pine forests.

I have a commercial high volume ozone generator I run a few minutes a day
when I am away from home for an extended period. Not only does the house

RE: [BlindHandyMan] outlet timers

2010-06-09 Thread Tony
The last ones I got from Harbor Freight a couple of years ago have 96 slide
pins around the outer edge of the dial, one for each 15 minutes of the day.
You push them toward or away from the center of the dial to turn the
appliance on or off for the desired times. You can have as many on / off
cycles of any duration as you can manage in 24 hours. The times are written
on the dial but you can set your own calibration by setting one pin on,
turning the dial until the appliance turns on, then that pin will represent
the current time and you can count from there. Might be simpler to have
some one mark the dial and case for midnight so you can reset it yourself if
it gets unplugged or you lose power.

Hey Guys,

Does anyone here use one of the outlet timers that you put in the outlet and
then plug your appliance in to so you can use a timer to either turn it on
or off? I remember my grandmother having them when I was a kid, but I do
not remember enough about the details to know if a blind person could set
them or not.

I know many items now come with their own clocks and timers, but so often
they are not accessible to set. This is to help with my conservation and

Can anybody tell me what the correct term is for the shank on a pop rivet?

Also, would the "flange" or rim of the pop rivet correctly be called the
shoulder?

And now, I also have these goofy rivets that have no shank. The rivet tool
these came with have a threaded shank that is inserted into the rivet tool
before the head is attached. Then the rivet itself threads onto this shank
after the head is threaded onto the rivet tool itself. Of course, the rivet
rim or shoulder goes onto this threaded shank first and the bottom of the
rivet body threads on to the exposed end of this "threaded shank." Can
anybody tell me the correct name of this type of rivet?

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Using a flair tool.

2009-11-11 Thread Tony
Its been years since I used one of these but I seem to remember a couple of
steps that helped.

Be sure the tubing is cut square and is put in the flaring tool with the end
being square with the flaring block.

On larger tubing I would flare it in steps. I would not put the tubing
flush with the surface of the flaring block but only part way up the flare.
Flare that part and move the tubing up a bit more and flare again. This
helped keep an even flare and prevented splits.

Hope that helps

RE: [BlindHandyMan] 3,000 w generator

2009-09-23 Thread Tony
A 20lb tank holds about 4 gallons of propane. Propane contains less energy
than gasoline but can run more efficiently. My 3500W generator can run at
an average of half power all night and part of the day on 5 gallons of gas.

We get a lot of under 5 minute power losses for which I use a number of UPS
systems. We also get 1 or 2 that last for days.

You probably would get a few hours from a 20lb tank and they are expensive
to fill. I would suggest a larger tank, a 100lb if you can manage it. That
would last you at least a couple of days and is probably cheaper to fill.
Propane went for 1.49 a gallon here this summer. It was over 3.00 last
winter and kerosene was over 4.50. We can purchase any amount of propane at
the summer price and they will deliver it when needed.

I would be interested in converting my generator and not having to store
gasoline.

I learned that Aldies has a 3,000 watt generator for about $200. I also

natural or propane.
I wonder how long it would run on a 20lb propane tank.
It is a unit that I would hope never to use. I thought about it just for an

Has anyone converted a unit to run on propane?

Aloha all,
We had our office carpet replaced and it is marvelous, but when we
put our old chair mats down, it was clear that we needed new ones
because the mats sunk down and made it difficult to roll the chairs.

So, off to OfficeMax to purchase a mat that said it was for thick
carpets. Now as we roll the chairs around, the mat creeps over toward
the desk and bends along the edge. I can't seem to figure out how to
get it to stay still.

Back to OfficeMax to hear that they didn't have anything else that
would presumedly work. Check at other available stores, no help.

Anyone have this problem and what did you do?

RE: [BlindHandyMan] car battery power

2009-07-19 Thread Tony
Actually, CCA is current output for a very short time to crank the starter.
Your battery probably has 50-80 amp hours of capacity. Since the battery's
life is shortened each time the amp-hour capacity is discharged by more
than 10% you could run your inverter at full load for 30-45 minutes. You
can check the current drawn by your inverter while using various 110v
devices to find how much it is actually using. Your charger probably only
draws a couple of amps, which means you can run it for a couple of hours
without having problems starting the motor or damaging the battery.

That's almost an impossible question to answer. With all things being
perfect, the car battery would maintain 850 CCA or cold cranking amps. But,
batteries change their reserves with age, heat, vibration and so on.

Having said all that, the starter is the unknown factor in the puzzle. How
many amps does the starter draw during start up? Ideally, most are pulling
between 150 and 200 amps today. Then there are the variables with the
starter. If the bushings are tight, you have extra draw. If the engine is
hot from running hard and sitting, they will heat up sitting after running
on the highway, that takes extra power to start as well.

Finally, I would say if there is a power draw of 10 amps by the inverter,
you should be safe for most stops during a trip. Remember once the engine
is started again, the battery is being recharged. A 10 amp per hour draw
should be able to run for 40 or 50 hours without leaving the battery low.
But this is in a perfect world too. During travel, even stopping for lunch
and the bathroom trips and filling up with gas, you should only be looking
at maybe a 20 or 25 amp draw before the car is running again. And if you
are able to run through a tank of gas before stopping again, the battery is
back to where it started in the beginning.

We were just on vacation and during travel I used a power inverter to power
my Trekker. The inverter has a 10A power consumption rating. The battery in
the van has a 850 cca rating. When we took some rest stops I left the unit
running while the motor was turned off. How do I figure out how long it can
run before the van's battery will drop too low to start the vehicle?
I saw a battery saver that you would plug in line and will automatically
turn whatever is plugged in off when the car battery drops below 11V.
I also sometimes use a 12v Igloo cooler. With this I usually do not let it
run because it will significantly warm up. I just toss a blanket over it for
more insulation. This unit has a 3.6v consumption.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] gas/electric refrigerator

2009-05-31 Thread Tony
These usually use electric heat in place of the propane heat. If you get a
120/12v/propane they usually run a compressor directly from 120vac or an
inverter from 12vdc. Propane runs a silent cooling system like the one you
have now.

The non compressor units use about 4 times the energy which adds to heating
inside the camper.

HI, I have a old camper with a propane gas / 120 electric refrigerator in
it.. Right now I have no gas to try the refrigerator but when I try it on
electric Don't here any noise like a compressor starting.. This thing was
given to me so this the first time trying this stuff.. Would the
refrigerator just have a electric heating unit in it to heat up the
refrigerant like the gas would and not have a compressor in it??? Thanks for

Walmart frequently sells batteries that have been on the shelf too long. If
all of your short lived ones are from the same package or two that could be
the problem.

Hi,

What would cause batteries to drain quickly, in things like remote controls
for television sets?
We have a Dish TV satellite system, and one of the remotes constantly has to

have the batteries replaced!

Granted, I don't buy the very expensive batteries; I buy Wal-Mart's off
brand, but I don't have problems using them in other devices!
This problem is really out of control because we're having to replace
batteries, every two to three weeks, as of late!

Dish is no help because they don't think it's a problem!

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Roots in sewer line

2009-03-16 Thread Tony
I don't know about use on a septic system but I used to use a pound of
copper sulfate, once or twice a year. It was a fairly common practice in
the town I lived in at the time.

Rock salt would probably help some but the copper sulfate caused the roots
to srivel and break off.

Howdy all, I just unclogged the sewer line in which I have found tree roots.

Several years ago I installed an outside cleanout, since the house is on a

Will any chemicals work?

One should never be absolutely dependent on a device such as a cumpass.
Normal mobility skills should definately be developed and
maintained.

That being said, a compass is very useful when crossing a large open space
such as a parking lot.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Noise reduction.

2009-01-03 Thread Tony
Many years ago I worked on lab equipment that was so sensitive it picked up
people walking on the concrete floor more than 30 feet away. We lined the
bottom and sides of the cabinet with about 1/16 inch lead sheeting. After
that you could walk right beside the equipment and not be detected. It also
blocked speech the machine sometimes detected.

Fiberglass insulation has been shown not to dampen sound very much. Let me
make sure I have the idea right though.

Are you making a shop in the basement and trying to wall it off from the
rest of the basement as well as over head?

We just did a noise reduction project in one of our houses. There is a type
of caulk you can get and it goes on the back of the drywall. Never really
hardens but it stops vibration from starting or continuing.

We were told to use 5/8 drywall because it is rated much higher than half
inch in sound deadening.

There are also some sheets of vinyl with something like led in the middle
that is supposed to work well too. We passed on that. When all was
finished, you can't hear voices pass through the walls now. You can hear
someone walking around overhead but much of that is because of hardwood
floors. And my wife wasn't interested in putting anything between the
joists to further deaden sound.

I would think the acoustical tile will help with stopping sound from
traveling upwards. It won't hurt to put something in the joist bays as well
before closing them off. I would recommend some thick drywall first and
then the tiles. That is extra insurance and that never hurts. Unless you
are paying for it and then everything hurts...

So, in the fantasy world in which I live, one of my projects is to wall
off one end of my basement to make a shop where I can go and make dust and

noise without getting dust and noise all over the rest of the basement and

house. I realize I won't make a sound proof room, but I would like to
take some steps to reduce the amount of noise that will bleed out of the
  shop area.

Here are some of my thoughts, any corrections, additions, or ridicules
  will be accepted.

The wall will have a footer and header that are 2X6 instead of 2X4. Then
there will be studs staggard two one edge or the other. Thus, there will
be no stud that reaches from edge to edge, so no bridging. The cavity
will be filled with fiberglass insulation. The dry wall on the shop side
will be mounted to Z bars instead of directly to the studs.

Lots of fiberglass will be stuffed up into the joist bays overhead and
then acoustic tile as a ceiling.

One major question I have is dot dot dot.

The wall runs parallel to the joists, so should I run the top of the wall
up between two joists, but not fix it to joists or floor and then stuff
lots of fiber glass around the top edge, or do I absolutely have to fix
the top of the wall to something. Obviously, there is a rigidity issue if
I don't. The ends of the wall can be fixed to the cement walls of the
basement, if that is enough of a substitute.

Most of the sound will be high frequency sounds so doesn't fiber glass
batting and sealing up cracks take care of most of that sound?

Without trying to make a sound proof room, are there any other things I
could do to reduce the sound bleed?

I use something similar to this, (could even be th3e same brand), for
dispatch cases and the like, and it really does a good job. You just
squirt some in your hand, work it into the leather and whipe and buff with
a
clean rag. It actually leaves a little shine as well as cleans your
  leather.

Neatsfoot oil is very good for keeping leather tack supple in very cold
weather, but it does often cause color changes, so I'd be careful using it

Depending on the severity of the clog, give something like Dawn
dishwashing liquid a big squeeze directly into the drain and then dump some
very hot water in after it. It may have to have a couple doses of hot water
dumped in. If you see progress repeat it. If not no harm was done. But think
about it. Dish soap is used to dissolve grease so using a larger amount of
dish soap will make it stronger and the hot water helps to melt the grease
as well. I've done this myself that's why I can pass it along.

I found them at Thomas Distributing. I've had good luck with them and they
honor warranties.

Haven't ordered either yet but will have to choose when my current stock

Maha came out with two new NiMH batteries last year. One is
a 2100mah AA cell that holds 85% of its charge for a year. The other is a
2700 mah AA cell with a 5 year garuntee.

The 2700 cells are supposed to stay cooler while charging.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] all I want for christmas is a double oven range+reason for gas question

2007-12-02 Thread Tony
Several years ago I installed a large electric oven on top of the counter
with an electric cooktop a little ways away from the oven. The cooktop had
raised glass covers over the coils so drips couldn't get below. Both unit
had heavy duty coils and put out more heat than a typical gas range and the
glass coil covers were strong enough to hold large pots. Had the ease of
cleaning of a flat glass top and the raised covers helped me find the
burners. It did take more counter space but I was nearly doubling the
counter space at the same time.

Coil cook tops are still made and they also still make the solid plate
type.

While I haven't been in the market for a range in a long time the standard
sizes are 24 and 30 inches. There are now many larger as well. I have only
seen double side-by-side ovens in wider ones but there may be some as narrow
as 30 inches I don't know that. I have also seen some one above the other
but not often, more commonly when I lived in England.

So, they do make the top you want but I don't know about the double oven.

There's a twist. I want a double oven range with a *coil* cooktop.
However,
I don't know of any ranges that have this setup, so thought gas (at least
for the top) was my only choice. Hence, I asked about running a gas line.
Now, lets suppose gas is not an option. Can you fit a double oven and a
cooktop in the same space as a standard range? This is assuming of course
  coil cooktops are still made.

Ok, here's another question.
Is there such a thing as a battery powered heater out their which I can rig

Yes, I have a cig lighter plug in their, but I really don't want to use it
for fear of draining the batteries we need to get around with.
I tried propain heaters, and don't like that whole thing.
A man in our church suggested hooking two car batteries together some how to
run an electrical heater off of them.
This idea sounds good to me, if there isn't something easier available
already.
Our's is a huge golf cart really, has two forward facing bench seats with a
small truck bed on back, so plenty of room.
I will look forward to your ideas.

Bought mine through SpeakToMe.

It has stopped working a few times. I don't know what brought it back each
time, but this time I think it's gone for good.

When I put the battery in, it starts to say "error, memory clear, 0
milimeters". Sometimes it gets out the whole announcement and sometimes it
doesn't get out the first sylable. After that, it's totally quiet except
for a slight click when I put the battery in and out. When it was working
last, it would continue to repeat the last measurement and not turn off.
The last measurement, of course, was zero, as I had just retracted the tape.

So, has anyone else had such a problem and what did you do about it? Was it
a waste of money and can I get a good Braille tape measure somewhere?

Thank you much, anybody.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] electric heaters

In my area the choice is electric or propane. Prepaying for propane at
summer rates, propane gives a few less BTUs per dollar. I plan to use
mostly heating with electricity with propane helping on the colder days. At
least I won't have to leave town for a week like I had to do a few years ago

I just talked to a friend of mine who purchased a very unique electric
heater. It is quartz and hot air. Since quartz radiant heat typically only
heats the objects in front this heater was designed to do both. In front of
the three quartz tubes are copper tubes. Since the quartz will heat the
copper a small fan forces air through the copper heating the room. He
purchased this unit last year for about $400. He just purchased a device
from harbor freight that shows the kw of an appliance. You plug this thing
in and then he plugged the heater into it. It shows actual usage. Using this
he was able to calculate that it is costing him about $55 a month to heat
his living, dining and kitchen. At night he turns the unit off and uses his
oil heating system. At the current price of heating oil at nearly $3 he
should recover his investment in a few weeks.

I recently bought a Direct from Newegg.com. 1000 VA, 600 W. Price was
about $80 with free shipping. They had it this weekend for $68 with free
shipping. Its noticebly smaller and lighter than tmy old Belkin. I got it
for the reasons you described.

Just about everybody has one or more UPS on sale every few weeks, frequently
with free shipping.

I recently lost a DSL modem and a ham power supply that were connected to my
Belkin. It was out of warranty and I didn't expect them to replace it but
got a new one delivered last week. Still processing paperwork for the

that where we live the power tends to cut off for a few seconds and then
come back on. We are really only talking literally about less than 5 to 10
seconds. That is just long enough to accomplish 2 things. One is to make my
computer shut off and the other thing, which is related is to piss me off.
I want one that is reliable but I don't think I need the top of the line.
Does any one know where I can get one for a good price and what kind of
price range might I be looking at?
What I really need to hook up is 2 CPU's Thanks Robert

As water freezes the impurities concentrate in the unfrozen water.
Commercial ice makers stop freezing before this last dirty water is frozen,

RE: [BlindHandyMan] electrical safety when plumbing with plastic

Here you are allowed to saw the ground rod off if you bury it to the point
you can't pull it out by hand. Also, there is a tool that can also be used
for metal fence posts. It's a heavy pipe, sealed on end and with handles.
You put it over the top of the ground rod and slam it repeatedly until you
can't go any further.

There must be many places where you couldn't drive an 8 foot rod into the

RE: [BlindHandyMan] sewer problem

2007-08-25 Thread Tony
A plumber once told me to put a pound of copper sulphate down the drain
every six months. This kills the roots inside the drain and doesn't
otherwise injure the tree.

I have had two houses with root problems and this kept the drain clean as
long as I owned them. I did have to replace a short section of orangeburg
pipe that was only a few feet from a large tree.

My current house has a septic system and I made sure there were no trees

When I first bought the house, the sewer had a backup. Called the city and
had them clean out their side, but the problem persisted. Had to call the
plumber and pay about $95 to have them clean the system. Now, 3 months
later, the backup is back. Both times, the sewer backs up into the shower.
Both toilets are clogged. The weird part is that the sinks are not clogged.
I don't want to have to call the plumber every 3 months to have them clean
the system, but if that's the best thing to do, I will. I want to know what
could be causing the clog in the first place and how to prevent it. I do
have trees in both the front and back yard. This includes a sago palm which
is practically against the front of the house. One other thing about this
clog. If you wait a while, the water in the shower goes away. If you wait
long enough, you can flush the toilet a few times before the water returns.
I'm thinking about getting a snake so I can atempt to clear the line. Any
thoughts or suggestions on this are appreciated.

Well gang, now that my smoker is assembled and my nuckles are almost healed
up for banging them around trying to nock out pieces from the main chamber
to mount the side fire box, I am just about ready to smoke.
When I decided that I wanted to smoke I never thought about all this stuff
of maintaining the fire and keeping the right temperature.
I use a gas grill without much trouble. I can't stand lighter fluid as it
gives me an instant headache so I am happy not to use it to fire up my
smoker. I found a couple electric starters that sound interesting and one
in particular that I read about on the Ace hardware page seems to be one
that you put several pieces of charcoal in a container that you plug in and
when it is ready you toss the contents in the smoker.
I plan to use the Minion method as if I understand it means less fire
maintainance and more even temperature control so I won't have to bother the
wife or children with checking the temperature.
Like some of the others on this list I wish there was a thermometer to tell
me the temperature in the chamber but I already have a remote thermometer
that beeps when the grilled meats reach the right temperature so I hope I
can use it to know when to remove the smoked meats.
Now all I need to do is season the grill and all its pieces and grab some
meat and fire it up and see what happens. If I am successful, will let you
know, smile!

Does anyone on this list receive in your email the flyers on sales and
discount coupons from Harbor Freight tools? The reason I ask is my screen
reader Window Eyes no longer will interpret the sale items. I think they
changed the format. Heres what my screen reader is seeing.

They provide strips of clear dymo tape that you have to cut apart and have
someone place over the buttons. Not what I expected but it gets the job
done.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] maintaining pressure of water from fresh water well

2007-02-22 Thread Tony
You tank requires a certain amount of air to provide the pressure when the
pump isn't running. Sounds like the air level needs adjusting. Your tank
manual or the website should have some simple instructions for doing this.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Here is what I wanted.

2007-01-14 Thread Tony
Some 20 years ago I had one of the last NLS players with pitch restoration.
I babied that unit for years. On that unit I could remove the head cover
strip by prying it up in the middle. There were fingers on each end that
held it in place but no screws. Don't know if it would work on the curremt
models.

I thought their might be a trigger somewhere that would allow that door
to be released so one could really get at the heads and capstan. On most
commercial cassette machines you can remove the door for proper cleaning and
that is what I thought about these players. .

RE: [BlindHandyMan] what does SEER mean?

2006-12-29 Thread Tony
Not sure about SEER but the older EER was the number of BTUs per watt.
Going from 6 to 13 means you will get the same cooling for less than 1/2 of
the electricity. Since your old unit was not working at peak efficiency,
you may save even more.

A ton of air conditioning is the amount required to make a ton of ice in 24
hours and is equal to 12,000 BTU. Your 2 1/2 ton unit is 30,000 BTU per
hour and is equal to about 5 of the 115 Volt window units.

Hi,
We had a very small C.O. leak and the teck told us the heater had to be
replaced.
Luckily, it was the fact that the fan wouldn't shut off, that made me decide
to call the teck in the morning. So a cracked board was the cause of that,
but a cracked block or exchanger was also found.
Now we also replaced the A.C. unit.
We went from a 6 SEER to a 13 SEER.
I was wondering,
What relevance is there to S.E.E.R? How is it calculated?
They refer to central units as two and a half tons"? does that mean 2000
BTU?
How does it equate to the standard sizes we install into windows?
Thanks

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] car window question

Ok folks, here is a question that really shows my redneck roots. *smile*

My son broke the window out of the back of our Suburban. It is not in the
budget to repair it right now, so we have some heavy plastic taped in the
window. It seems to be working just fine. We so often have the back of the
think loaded that the driver can not see out the back anyway.

My mother is horrified. At first she couldn't think of a good reason, she
just was. Now she has called me to say that she is certain that the exhaust
is going to kill the children. I am not kidding, even if I am laughing.

So, my serious question is to ask if using the plastic presents any danger?

Jennifer

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread Tony Thurman
Its been many years since I've seen this but they used a rectangular conduit
slightly larger than romex to run the wires on the surface of the walls from
either the baseboard or ceiling to the outlets and switches.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] identifying black and white wires etc.

2006-10-27 Thread Tony Thurman
I have someone tell me which wire is which on a new roll of romex then I
strip the end of the black and tye a knot in the red on both ends of the
roll.

As I install the wires I use a continuity check and mark both ends of the
wire as I cut it so I'm ready to go with the rest of the roll and can
install fixtures later.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] identifying black and white wires etc.

Hello folks,
I was listening to the handy show and Phil mentioned there was no way for a
blind person to tell which wire was the hot one. or rather what color a wire
was Well one can put the talking multi meter to use. Please note a audial
continuity tester and or a 110 volt buzzer can also be used.
First if you are replacing an outlet examine it closely. If it is the three
wire with a equipment ground it is a matter of replacing one wire at a time.
Put the equipment hole down. A bare or green wire will be attached to that
terminal so remove it from the bad outlet and put on the new one in the same
spot. The narrow slot on the right will be the black and the left wider
slot is the white wire.location.
If you are doing a single pole switch with only two wires it really does not
make a different. Note I am not counting the equipment grounding wire
sometimes fastened to the metal yoke of the switch.
Now if the out let is gone and only three wires are left.in the box proceed
as follows.
If one is totally bare without insulation that is the equipment grounding
wire. It is fastened to the grounding bar in the panel box. Check
continuity between it and each of the other ones . The one that shows
continuity is the white, which is also hooked to the metal of the panel box
as the equipment grounding wire is. There fore we read continuity.. The
one that doesn't show continuity is the black. This is assuming number one
the power is off and two nothing is plugged into the circuit and is turned
on. Your tester can backfeed in that case.
Using a voltage tester and alligator clips if you are a total turn power
off. Hook one lead to the bare wire using a jumper wire with alligator
clips. Hook the other jumper assembly and lead to one of the other wires.
Turn power. Click the talk switch on the meter and see what it reads. 120
volts means you are hooked between the hot wire and the equipment grounding
wire. No reading means you hooked to the white wire.
What to do when there are only two wires with no equipment ground, bare
wire. Basicallly the same thing I had to do many times when I was sighted.
You have to bring in a equipment ground. If you have metal water pipes you
can hook to them or the metal panel box if it is closer again with jumper
wires. For extended lengths a extension cord can be used. A straight
screwdriver inserted into the female cord end allows you to make connection
with out tearing the cord apart. Again a jumper wire hooked to the
screwdriver allows you to have a solid connection. Don't try to hold wires
together with your hands use the clips and jumper wires, they are more apt
to stay together that way.
So now with a known grounding point measure for voltage to each wire to
determine the hot or black one.
I have also used this method to straighten out incorrectly wired three way
switches when there was no equipment ground in the switch box. In this case
you need to understand the basic theory of the circuit to be able to trace
through the wiring, but it can be done. The talking multi meter is great
although a 110 volt buzzer could be used.
Ron

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Harbor Freight, a good tradeoff

2006-10-19 Thread Tony Thurman
I bought a small compressor from them last year and have been pleased with
it.

I recently purchased a hose reel on ebay. Its not the self winding model
but was cheap and is very sturdhy and is much better than messing with the
hose.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Harbor Freight, a good tradeoff

Well, I've been whining for a year or so about how much I need one of those
Tissot vibrating watches that cost $400 or so. And, my wife I believe was
going to buy me one for Xmas. Yesterday though, I decided I could save
money and really be happier buying a compressor, which I've also been
whining about not having.

So, after I got the "clearance" from my wife, I checked around a bit and
finally bought a small relatively inexpensive one from Harbor Freight.

I was able to get the compressor, hose, coupling set, blow gun, 3/8 drill
and 3/8 air ratchet for about $160.00, and that includes shipping.
And, since I saved us so much money, I'm going to have another 30 amp line
put on the breaker box in the basement, which is something else I've wanted
for a while.

BTW, I got really good service from the folks at Harbor Freight.
