Beldin wire products has a pliers type stripper that works extremely well. The only down-side to it is that it is a bit bulky to be using behind an instrument panel or other extremely tight spots. Seriously though, My father and I have always used a utility knife to strip wire. We would lay the wire to be stripped across our thumb in a cross pattern, then put the knife of the blade parallel to our thumb. This would allow for a more proper gauge of how much housing we were cutting off the wire and how deep we needed to go. I know, it wasn't the most safest way of stripping wire, but it was fast and pretty accurate and does what you need in a pinch. I've never cut myself, and the biggest problem I've ever had was with telephone wire and it's minute housing. I had to do those with my teeth, but the utility knife worked out with every other wire I ever had to strip. yes, on both counts. Re: the wire stripping, a long line down the wire allows for the parting of much insulation. If necessary, shaving that side flat and then slice it down. I think the company I like the most is Columbia River. They use a nice metal that allows for quck sharpening. And before everyone goes thinking I'm going to talk about a buxom blonde or fiery redhead, don't go there. Seriously though, My father and I have always used a utility knife to strip wire. We would lay the wire to be stripped across our thumb in a cross pattern, then put the knife of the blade parallel to our thumb. This would allow for a more proper gauge of how much housing we were cutting off the wire and how deep we needed to go. I know, it wasn't the most safest way of stripping wire, but it was fast and pretty accurate and does what you need in a pinch. I've never cut myself, and the biggest problem I've ever had was with telephone wire and it's minute housing. I had to do those with my teeth, but the utility knife worked out with every other wire I ever had to strip. the funny thing about telephone wire, as sold as telephone wire, is that the conductors are often metal impregnated nylon. So when trying to feel the difference between the jacket and the conductor... you could easily miss a few microns of copper or aluminum, or carbon dust bonded onto the surface of the filament while it cools; cutting through plastic till you find you're all the way through, wondering where the metal was hiding. . I gave up on that, I still insist I want bell wire when I do new phone jacks. I have to make up for that inability.
