Don't buy knock off parts. They don't fit right, and they aren't made as

Nope,

It is a battery operated device which has some sort of infrared eye
or something. The line of sight from the eye disallows the Robotic
Vac to cross that point, ware ever you place it. Depending on which
package you purchase, you may get only one or possible two virtual
walls, but, you can always, fore more money, purchase more!

I assume it won't go down stairs or would you need a virtual wall to
keep it from killing itself.

So you would use the virtual wall to keep it from venturing to a part of a

You don't use the virtual walls.
I find it works better for me to do the bedrooms separately from the great
room/kitchen/foyer.
Also regarding the charging issue that some people had with not being able
to see the light to know if it is properly charging on the base unit:
I plug it in directly and don't use the base unit. This way I know it is
charging.

Is the vutural walls thing, a matter of laying out copper wire, like I heard

We saw them do a does it work type demo on the news here of the robotic vacuum.
They were not impressed with the fact that it took 24 hours to charge for one
use.
But they said that it did pick stuff up.
I think they even let it do the sock test.
One thing they said, which wouldn't matter to us blind folks was that it
covered the same area a lot and that you almost had to leave the house or area,
because watching the thing would drive you nuts!

Of course just to add a little to the mix, these aren't technically
consider real vacuum cleaners are they?
My understanding is they are kind of more a sweeper machine than a
regular unit that would use more air than the sweeeping ability to get
the floor clean. Subsequently, they also don't handle dog hair very
well as I understand. My wife and I were kind of interested in one of
these, but with 2.5 German Shepherds in the house, that's a crap-load
of hair for any machine to handle.

Yes, they have rotating brushes on the bottom, and side brushes as well. We
had three dogs and a cat, and my wife sheds too, and the thing seems to do
pretty well with hair. You probably would have to empty the hopper after each
use, but if you run the thing every day, it seems to keep floors (hardwood
anyway) pretty clean.

Re: cleaning the Rainbow Was RE: [BlindHandyMan] Robotic vacuums

2008-05-14 Thread Matt
It's a hard hard sell on their part.
And you feel as though you are really being sold something and it makes you
wonder why the sell is so hard.
And they start up around $3,000 and by the time they left here, they had come
down to 2300.
There's a lot of this, let me talk to my supervisor, who has left and gone down
the street while the sales guy plays good guy, in your house and shows you all
of the features.
Then the supervisor is the bad guy, and the game goes between those two.
Then, the bad guy comes down and calls his supervisor to get the price down a
bit more.
Blah blah blah.
They carry a cute girl with them whose job it is, to get you to open the door
and agree to let them into your home.
In the end, you have been hit suddenly, by strangers who have been allowed to
walk around many rooms in your house, and you don't know what kind of info was
laying around, like bank statements, money and/or other important private stuff.
It's just the best idea all around to say no at the door, and to keep strangers
out of your house.
If their product was really worth while, then it could sell itself on TV or by
word of mouth.
Rainbow is slowly doing that, if I ever want to invest in such an involved
work horse, I will buy a rainbow, because I have friends and have heard of
others who truly value those in their homes.
We don't have animals, and although we do have kids, I figure we will just do
the best we can for a few years, then just get new floor coverings, furniture
and so on after it has been worn out and/or destroyed.
Not that we intend to live in a stigh ya understand, but for now, we really
don't have a need for the super cleaning machine type!
As for how the curby is built?
Yes, it did seem to be built well, but gee hees!
For 2300 and something a stranger sells you off of a truck, shouldn't it be?
As for dropping it off of a building?
Personally, I would get more satisfaction by dropping the sales team off of a
building.
hahahahahhahahah,
Thanks for all of the input from those who own and have owned them.
Some are points on the product's side, but the way they came at me just turned
me off.
As for the water clean out on these sorts of things,
Couldn't you just find a nice public city rain gutter, and sneak out in the
middle of the night and dump?
It's not like we require lighting.
Maybe I'm just sneaky.
For that matter, go to the car wash and use their vacuum.
They can probably handle anything.

Now how the hell could it possibly clean the gutter? Does it push all
the crap ahead of itself and clod the drain pipe> grin Sounds like a
fairly useless device. Gee, if you have to go to the trouble of
putting the thing up there, might as well just clean them while your
there. For not a lot of junk in the gutter, taking your blower and
sending a blast up the drain pipe actually helps blow junk out of the
gutter. Not very effective, but a quick fix. I'm still looking for a
good gutter solution.

2008-05-14 Thread Scott Howell
Well I had a Kerby back in the early 90's. I did sell it and recovered
some of my money, but here's what I thought. It was well constructed,
I figured you could drop it off a very high building and it would
continue to work. What I did not like was the fact dog hair etc. could
become rapped up in the belt and that was a major issue. The ability
to clean carpets wasn't really all the impressive, and the salesperson
was ok, but you saw they really had to push the product since I'd
imagine they didn't make a massive chunk of change. Of course I don't
know what they actually get, but point is the machines are really well
built, but I think a bit much for what you get. So, there's my
thoughts for whatever they are worth.

explain the Rainbow machine. I know nothing about it.
I've been an electro-Lux guy since 1985. The Orick doesn't do as well, but
it's an upright as opposed a canister so it has wife appeal.

i have read that as well, that even with a Roomba, one still needed to
vacuum on occasion with a more powerful machine.

The Rainbows also do a really deep cleaning and a super job. My
understanding is that the robotic machines are more for a light vacuuming.
Though I would happily be wrong about this. :)

have a robotic vacuum and I love it. I set it up to vacuum my whole
apartment whenever I go out of my apartment for grocery shopping or
something. My sister helps me set it up, because it's kind of tricky. I
really like the blind handy man show a lot. Sometimes I help my sister Jenny
do yard work, and when I move into a condo probably next year, I won't have
to do any yard work because there are professionals who do yard work in
condos. Like I said earlier in this post, I love the coverage on the blind
handyman show and I'm very proud to be a part of this list.

Hey,
Have you'll heard that the same company also makes a robotic gutter

In my opinion the Rainbow is the best you can get as far as cleaning not
clogging and since the air and dirt goes through water you have mear 0
emitions and it puts out perfect humidity. Meaning it puts out the same
humidity weather the room is way too dry or way too humid it will come out
the exhaust at some where around 45 percent. Don't quote me on the
percentage. OK Now that I have the free advertising out of the way. By the
way I don't sell them I just like the quality. And thought I would share.
Any way the purpose of my post is to ask Larry or any one that might have a
newer model. Are the newer ones still just as much a pain in the rumpus as
the old ones to empty and clean the water reservoir? The one we have I
think we got it in about 1996 or there about. No newer than 1998 so it is at
least 10 years old. The only thing I don't like about the rainbow is
emptying it. My Wife just loves this rainbow because in her little world it
is completely self filling, self cleaning, self propelled and it takes
itself out and puts itself back away when it is done. Hmm I wonder how it
does all that? Grin. Robert

Hi Shawn! My robotic vacuum also goes under the couch too. I have to have
somebody help me charge it up every so often. The best time to use it I
think is when I'm out of my apartment for awhile doing something, and then
when I get back, I check it to see how it did, and if it vacuumed everywhere
and I also check to find out if it missed anything. Jeff Balek

have a robotic vacuum and I love it. I set it up to vacuum my whole
apartment whenever I go out of my apartment for grocery shopping or

really like the blind handy man show a lot. Sometimes I help my sister Jenny

We had the curbie sales group experienc e here at my house.
I still feel dirty from the experience!
We did not and will not buy one of those.

Of course just to add a little to the mix, these aren't technically
consider real vaccum cleaners are they?
My understanding is they are kind of more a sweeper machine than a
regular unit that would use more air than the sweeeping ability to get
the floor clean. Subsequently, they also don't handle dog hair very
well as I understand. My wife and I were kind of interested in one of
these, but with 2.5 German Shepherds in the house, that's a crap-load
of hair for any machine to handle.

The Rainbows also do a really deep cleaning and a super job. My understanding
is that the robotic machines are more for a light vacuuming. Though I would
happily be wrong about this. :)

both carpet and hard surfaces? What about moving it from upstairs to down?

have a robotic vacuum and I love it.

I'm with you. Lived alone for 13 years and did all the house work myself.

And the one that talks? It could be sending my information back to the mother

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Robotic vacuums

2008-05-13 Thread wstephan
At least on the older ones, it can be difficult for a blind person to tell if
the unit is charging. They don't always lock on to the docking station right,
and the only way to tell is by whether a light's on or not. I think my wife
just plugs a cable into the unit and doesn't bother with the docking station on
the older model.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Robotic vacuums

2008-05-13 Thread wstephan
We have a two-storey house and my wife actually has two Roomas, one for each
floor. They have outstanding customer service, and the newer ones are becoming
way more blind friendly. They actually have speech on the new one she has which
instructs you as to what you need to do, as in clean brushes or free up wheels.
The only set-up I know about would be the virtual walls to keep the thing out
of certain areas.
