[BlindHandyMan] Tape residue on finished wood.

2009-08-22 Thread Max Robinson
By way of background, I bought a friend a gift card to Lowe's. I also
bought a little wooden presentation box with the Lowe's logo on it.
However, when I got it home I found it had been wrapped in clear tape which
must have been packing tape. When I removed the tape there was a sticky
residue left behind. What will clean it but not take off the finish? I
tried alcohol which softened it and seemed to take it off but it didn't
remove it. After it dried it was as sticky as ever. I also tried Orange
clean and Orange glow but they didn't work either. Any suggestions? Or
should I just throw the thing away.

Regards.

I found that mineral spirits, paint thinner, usually works. If you are
thinking of tossing it you can't hurt it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Tape residue on finished wood.

2009-08-22 Thread Dale Leavens
So long as the alcohol didn't damage the finish you might try adding some
talcum powder with the alcohol then wipe it off thoroughly. Much, hopefully all
of the sticky will adhere to the talcum powder and be removed with the powder.

Another possible alternative is a solution of mild detergent to wipe off the
alcohol while it is still wet with the alcohol. The damp detergent cloth may
lift away the sticky which is suspended in the alcohol. What seems to be
happening is that the alcohol will evaporate and leave the dissolved goo behind.

vaseline may let you wipe it right away. it breaks the bond by rehydrating
the semi dried adhesive.
