Re: [BlindHandyMan] gas powered leaf blowers for snow

2010-03-01 Thread Spiro
that is what Philadelphia uses in some of the fleet. With the budget
problems, they now cancel trash pick up when they are going to send the
trucks out for plowing that day.
Of course that gives the guys a reason to lay off the pick up routine the
day before a plow day if they are forewarned. That's what they did to me
last week. Wednesday is my pickup, at about 10AM Wednesday they announced
that Thurs and after would be picked up next (this) week. haha my noon
pick up was unfullfilled.

I'll bet they are out there immediately as the snow is falling. We don't
bother moving small amounts of snow like that except maybe with a quick pass
with a scraper. I like my 36 inch wide scraper for light snow, tilt the
blade slightly and walk down one side of a walk pushing the snow to one side
then turn and comeback on the other side, like a miniature grader.

It is interesting though what they do use where they don't have proper
removal equipment. I was watching them remove snow in New York State I think
it was with blades mounted on garbage trucks. Not ideal but better than
nothing for those occasions when they need it.

I was talking to a friend that was the maintenance manager for the local
hospital. They have some very long sidewalks and he told me that they
 found
that the gas powered leaf blower is the best tool for the job. He went on
 to
say that it clears the snow down to the concrete and any spots that are
missed an ice scraper easily gets them. It is very quick. Now they do not
let it build up for obvious reasons.
