hi lenny i have had a mat like that for years now.
they work grate. especially for sanding smaller things.
say 3 by 5 or what ever.
the workpiece just sinks a bit in the rubber as you sand and it doesn't
move.

They are suppose to be a power grab mat to hold the work piece. The sanding
mat has small holes so that the sanding dirt falls through the mat. Has
anyone used these or similar items?
I could not find the overall dimensions so sent them an email. They have a
special with both mats for $14. I think I want them just would like some
input first.

ROUTER MAT: Great for routing, sanding, scraping, drilling, etc., all
done without clamps! The PowerGrip Router Mat's gripping action holds work
securely in place. Made of dense rubber that will not slide on wood,
laminate, CorianTM, etc. PowerGrip Router Mat pads are thinner and grip
better than the multicolored urethane pads. Eliminates vibration.
Sanding Mat: Ideal for sanding since dust never clings - the mat has
many tiny holes that allow dust to fall through -holds your work piece like
a magnet, without clamps. Made of knitted polyester, coated with a special
formula of PVC. Eliminates vibration.

Hi Karl,

When I get a bit of time later today or more likely tomorrow I'll try to
find you some British locations. For woodworking though, something like
about 600 grit is about as fine as you need. Rubbing compound between coats
of varnish or varathane will produce a final wonderful smooth finish. Mostly
I find that among the automotive supplies. It seems to be even finer than

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sanding

2007-03-23 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
Yes. 4/0 or steel wool is often used after a finish has been applied to
rub out any imperfections in the finish or dust that may have settled on the
wet finish. It is also used to reduce a high gloss to a satin finish and
sometimes is used to apply wax.

But you will not be removing any wood with the steel wool because it is so fine.

Do not use steel wool if you are going to apply a water-based finish afterwards
because fine little particles of steel wool often remain on the surface and
they could rust from the moisture and stain the surface.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sanding

You certainly can however you must be careful not to introduce any moisture
or it rusts immediately and will stain your wood. You also want a very fine
grade, double or triple 0 but I can't tell you how that relates to grades of
abrasive paper. Mostly I do not use wire wool personally and you have to
clean it very carefully after. I do use it for cleaning up copper fittings
for soldering sometimes.

for very fine sanding, I get Emory cloth, which can go down to a 1200 grit,
which is very fine, also if you are polishing up a finished product, you can

leevalley.com has abrasive films that come in extremely fine grits down to 1/2
microns. Those are the finest available in the market today and are the basis
for the Scary Sharp sandpaper method. The abraisive films are also sold through
toolsforwoodworking.com
