RE: [BlindHandyMan] Testing for Mold?

2010-06-20 Thread Gary
It might help to spend a few days away from your house to see if you feel
relief from the mold symptoms. I suppose a week would be even better.

Down here in the south part of Texas, mold does cause problems for a lot of
people--but there are a lot of scams. Modern testing knowledge and tools
really can identify small levels of mold that can be harmless. There really
are safe levels of mold that can be identified and exploited by sleazy
companies. I'm sure that even well-meaning, but overcautious inspectors have
made large profits from unhealthy homeowners.

Claudia,
I'd run the other way fast, free inspection just about guarantees
they'll find something expesive.

Although a good electrostatic air cleaner might remove mold spores
it wouldn't help keep it off things unless it
dehumidified. I bet a dehumidifier would be much much cheaper
and do the job as well.

If anybody so much as mentions air filters using ozone run the other way
evenfaster, it's poison, but they sell them anyhow.

As has been said, wash with a solution of bleech and dehumidify if you see
water where it shouldn't be and you'll probably do fine
and save lots of money.

[BlindHandyMan] Testing for Mold?

2010-06-17 Thread Claudia
Hi,

how do I go about learning what needs to be done, in order to have my house
tested for mold?
my son and I are repeatedly getting ill, and I honestly don't think there's a
problem, but since we can see, it's better to be sure than not.
Yes, we did have water damage a couple of years ago, but when everything was
cleaned and repaired, there was no indication that there was any mold presence,
once everything had been sanitized, etc.

The only thing I know about those purification systems is they clamed to

this on the Consumer Reports web site about this topic but that was several

Maybe you guys can help me out.

I have sitting in the closet a 1964 Fender Sunburst Strat. I bought it in
1966 along with a Fender Duel Showman Amp for $700.00.
The guitar has been fitted with Hum bucker pickups, Shailer tuning pegs
and a Bicsby Bad-ass bridge. All of this work was done in the early 70's
  and
I still have all of the original parts.
  1. What is this ax worth?

  2. Is it worth me refitting it with the original parts?

  3. Is this something that an old burned out hot-rodder can do?

I was offered $10,000.00 for the guitar and amp, is this close?
  BTW.
The other night I took it down to the shop and put my straight edge on the
neck and it is still within .005 of absolutely flat.
The guitar hasn't seen strings since Elvis died.
I look foreword to your comments.

Nice, I played one of the nobody Steinberger and it was pretty neat. I
also have a Fender American Jazz and a U.S Masters which is made in
Wisconsin. I figured if I could get what I wanted, then I'd be happy.
The only other bass I'd love to have is a good fretless. I tried a
couple, but just haven't found the one I want. I wanted to take a bass
and convert it to fretless, but I decided I wasn't going to do the job
well enough. Of course I'm not quite good enough yet in my opinion to
really play a fretless and sound good at it. grin
I do love playing and maybe one day I'll even consider making a bass.
That would be fun, but of course I haven't the equipment to do that
task and you'd need some good tools to pull that off. Well pull it off
and end up with a playable instrument.

[BlindHandyMan] Testing of Private Wells

2008-01-11 Thread Ray Boyce
About half the population of Michigan depends on
ground water as the primary source of drinking water.
Many of these individuals, especially those residing in
rural areas, have their own wells. In light of recent
reports of groundwater contamination in many areas of the
state, much concern exists about the safety of well
water. This is designed to address this concern and
provide a guide to testing private wells.

Many contaminants are natural. Where do these
contaminants come from? Many are naturally occurring
substances such as calcium, magnesium, silica and
fluoride. As many as 50 minerals may naturally occur in
water but these generally do not cause health problems,
since they usually occur in such small amounts. More
often they impart undesirable properties such as
unpleasant taste, odor or hardness to the water.
Some contaminants are living organisms, mainly soil
bacteria. The ones which cause the most common odor,
taste, smell and discoloration problems are the sulfur,
iron and manganese bacteria. Occasionally other types of
bacteria, which indicate unsanitary conditions, are
present. These may not affect the characteristics of
water but are indicators of the possible presence of
disease-causing microorganisms.

Other contaminants are man-made. These include a wide
range of synthetic organic compounds, such as
trichloroethylene, phenols, benzene and toluene. Other
chemicals which may contaminate water are the heavy
metals such as lead and cadmium, and salt or brine used
on roads. In general, these contaminants pollute
groundwater as a result of improper storage or disposal
practices. Leaking underground storage tanks and leaking
landfills are two common examples. At high-enough levels,
these contaminants may render water unsuitable for
drinking and may cause adverse effects on health.
Tests of well water have to be very specific. It is not
possible to test one well and determine what the
contaminant levels are in other wells in that area. A
very complex hydrogeological investigation would be
needed to make this determination, and this is not
generally cost-effective. Thus, it is usually up to the
individual well owner to decide if well testing is needed
and what particular tests should be performed.

If well-water quality is in doubt, the first thing
that a well owner should do is to contact the local
health department. Department sanitarians can discuss the
problem and recommend further action. ln some cases, a
visit to the well site will be needed before a decision
can be reached. If the situation warrants it, water
testing may be the next step. This testing may be done by
the local health department, by the state health
department or by a private testing firm. Many tests can
be done by the appropriate agency, but private testing
may be needed due to the limited resources available in
these agencies. The agencies work on a priority system,
which takes into account both the potential health risk
and the number of people who may be affected.

Sampling is the first step. Regardless of who
performs the testing the first step is the collection of
the water sample. If the well owner performs the
sampling, he or she is usually provided with the
appropriate sterilized sample bottle and instruction on
how, when and where to collect the sample. This is a
crucial step, since the contaminants are generally
present in very minute amounts, and careless sampling can
destroy the possibility of obtaining accurate results.

Once the sample is obtained, it may be tested for a
number of different types of contaminants. One type of
test is designed to detect bacterial contamination. Most
odor, taste, smell and discoloration problems are due to
bacteria, so this test is performed quite commonly. It is
usually done free of charge by the local health
department. A second type of analysis, a partial chemical
analysis, is used to detect commonly occurring inorganic
constituents, such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron,
fluoride, chloride and nitrate. Some of these, such as
fluoride and nitrate, may be health hazards at high-
enough levels. Others, such as magnesium and iron, are
usually of concern due only to their effects on. This
type of test is more expensive than the bacteriological
analysis, but it is still not very costly. A third, and
potentially very expensive, type of analysis is a
specific chemical analysis. This is used to look for one
or a few particular chemicals which are suspected of
being present in the water. It is not possible to simply
analyze water for everything; the well owner must narrow
down the possible sources of the problem so that a
limited set of tests can be conducted. Some of the most
common types of specific chemical analyses are:

1. Purgeable halocarbons - These include many solvents
such as paint strippers and degreasers.

2. Purgeable aromatics - Petroleum products, such as
paint thinner, gasoline and fuel oil.

3. Non-volatile organics - Many pesticides.

4. Total organic halogen -

I have received some of these messages about the spam too. I didn't do
anything to activate such a program, so I am testing to see what happens when I
send this one.
I have replied to Cy and Lennie for the subjects that I got back saying that
bit about zero spam so I hope that the culprit isn't me.

I suppose that I should add the information page's address as well, but
basically if it has to do with computing equipment hardware or software it's
fair game to discuss. I think I'll do that shortly, thanks for bringing that to

Has anyone thought of responding to Bill off-list?

I mean, let's face it, if he sent a message to the list that he isn't
getting messages from the list, and people start responding to his test

Just thinking off the top of my head, know what I mean?

[BlindHandyMan] testing microwave

2007-02-01 Thread Lenny McHugh
I found this page on the net:
http://isgadget.com/how-to-know-if-your-microwave-has-leaks-cell-phone-test-and-wifi-test/
It goes on to say that a wifi device would be more accurate.
I knew that my cell was very close to microwave frequency 1800 mhz and
microwave starts at 2000 mhz. May be able to use it as an ear warmer next week
when we get the very low temp predictions.
