Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.
Too bad Sophie is too young to enjoy the fun in the snow with her dad. The concern about icicles of course is that it represents heat loss to the under side of the roof decking. This causes the melting which is reversed when the water passes the warm edge into the cold over the eve. With the warming the snow will be getting wet and heavy. Sometimes it is desirable to spray your shovel or scraper with a lubricant like Pam or WD40. I like to use hard paste wax so that the snow doesn't stick. I am sure your neighbours will be pleased to have the walks well cleaned. I just hired a chap with a small Kubota tractor with a blower on the back and a small blade on the front to keep our big double drive clear for the rest of the season. Not that we are having a lot of snow so far but it seems to be coming about daily and I am losing interest in spending that much time on the tail end of my 30 inch scraper. I'll go out tomorrow and clear the patio. If I was Han Solo I'd probably pet my wookie - Original Message - From: Dan Rossi To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, February 19, 2010 3:47 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea. It was so nice and sunny and warm out that I dug out my neighbors car, and scraped all the sidewalks down to the cement from the main stairs to my house. Actually the snow would most likely put out the flame unless you put a rose bud tip on and then you'd stay warm on the way. Hey remember the old cartoon Diver Dan? That's what you'd look like. 2 Q tanks, about as small as you can get, look similar to scuba tanks. You would definitely get a workout toting them around. - Original Message - From: Dan Rossi To: Blind Like Me List Cc: Blind Handyman List Sent: Thursday, February 18, 2010 8:13 AM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.
Well I just want all the damn snow to go away and how it gets done is not important. I had to get my ladder and reach the most offending gutter with a rather large ice dam on it. I had installed some covers that prevented leaves from getting into the gutter, but it seems the end result may have been a problem. THe problem seems in this case that the snow melted and turned to ice and of course covered the slots in the cover. So , next thing I know I have these rather large ice sickles hanging down and well little ice sickles back under the over-hang. Of course I got ice running down the side of the house, so I could only envision ice forming between the walls etc. I do not believe this is the case, but I got my hammer and pry bar and went to war against the ice. Well I cleared all the ice from the cover, but I can't quite get it off yet. I think there is still a bit to frozen or something preventing me from removing it. I however think maybe these covers are not such a great idea. So, maybe I need a torch instead. grin. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.
I could probably get drawn and quartered for offending someone's rights here, but I carried a pound of proffessional Ice Melt with me to the bus today. The 7 minute walk only took 21 mins where as Tuesday it was 28 mins. We got 46 inches in a week in Philadelphia. The property that floods with 3 inches of water when it rains was shoveled clear. I was awestruck. But the prior prop was only effected by trampling, no shoveling. So I sprinkled the Ice Melt as I walked. It's good to (they claim minus 12) I'd say zero F degrees. I also put some where obviously the workers of the D&D are not on good terms with the workers of the dolar store and there is a 1 foot patch of ice that sent me flat on Tuesday. I did well on that with my boot. At 9 cents a pound it is better than risking injury and the lawyer/insurance hastle. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.
Dan, if you're gonna do this, you need a flame thrower. We used to short-term lease them to the railroads back near NYC so they could thaw out switches and other yard stuff. The ones we had ran at something close to 500,000 BTUs and burned propane. I think if you used one of them, you'd probably just get steam and very little water. the snow to water conversion is either 10 inch to 1 inch or 8 inch of snow to 1 inch. Dan, If the wind is in your face, all that steam is going to come rite up at you. Oh well you probably won't freeze! Seriously I think the torch is too much of a "point source" to do a big area. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.
Only problem I see with this idea is the amount of water you'd generate, thereby flooding the path of least resistance. In other words, you'd go from walking in 10 feet of snow, to swimming in 10 feet of freezing water. Hmm, not much of a trade off. Better stick with your original plan, that of working from home, and enjoying Teresa and Sofia's company, nes pas, mon ami? Smile. Victor

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Great idea.
there is a solution to that, get a guide dog. hahah I like the idea though. I'll tie something to the end of Dewey's harness that will plow the snow so that when I go back home there is a snowbank and then the rest of the walk is clean. hahah that would be great.
